Description

“The thin blue line has some major cracks in it in Robb’s latest outstanding thriller. Whodunit is never in question, rather the fun in this tale is the meticulous preparation and setting of a skillful trap. All the usual players are engaged and their talents cleverly utilized as Robb spins a fast-packed and exciting read!”— RT Book Reviews “Warning: J. D. Robb’s In Death novels are highly addictive... Treachery in Death is a superb addition to the already brilliant In Death series. Another warning: once you start this book, you will not be able to put it down, so plan your reading accordingly.”—New York Journal of Books More Praise for the In Death series “Robb is a virtuoso.”— Seattle Post-Intelligencer “It’s Law & Order: SVU —in the future.”— Entertainment Weekly “J. D. Robb’s In Death novels are can’t-miss pleasures.”—#1 New York Times bestselling author Harlan Coben xa0 “Anchored by terrific characters, sudden twists that spin the whole narrative on a dime, and a thrills-to-chills ration that will raise the neck hairs of even the most jaded reader, the J. D. Robb books are the epitome of great popular fiction.”— New York Times bestselling author Dennis Lehane J. D. Robb is the pseudonym for a #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than 200 novels, including the bestselling In Death series. There are more than 500 million copies of her books in print.

By far the funniest EVER

I love how J.D. Robb is always able to infuse a sense of humour into the in-death series. Despite the "serious" matter of murder, the characters are always able to have a moment of comedy. Treachery in Death is by far, the funniest of the lot. I LOL-ed through most of this book. It's a good read, different from the other in-death books as we know from the start who the adversaries are. Nevertheless, there's still action, suspense and love (awwww) that made me love Eve Dallas and Delia Peabody (and many others.. ROARKE!!

Find something else to read

A friend whose judgment I normally trust loaned me J.D. Robb's "Treachery in Death." I knew that J.D. Robb is the sock puppet of Nora Roberts, but I hadn't read anything of hers with her Robb hat on. I'm disappointed to say it was awful.

It's set 50 years in the future. The heroine is Eve Dallas, a police lieutenant in charge of a homicide unit in New York City. Everybody has electronic gizmos that are totally gee-whiz, and that are able to do just the right things in just the nick of time. Many things are never explained, especially various bits of police jargon. Sometimes one can figure them out in context, sometimes not.

The plot is an absolute straight line. After the premise of the story is laid out, any of us could have written the rest of the plot. Further, the heroine is utterly unlikable, seeming to need to tell us what a great and noble person she is quite regularly and, when she's not doing so herself, listening to various members of her unit tell her what a great and noble person she is. She is a supercilious twit and becomes beyond tiresome long before the book is finished.

This is the 30somethingth book in her "... in Death" series. That means a very large number of people find the series very readable and want more. I can't imagine why.

I keep waiting for these to get boring...

I am an obsessive reader, easily going through 5-7 books in a week. It is very rare that I don't get bored with a series or an author - I think Robert Heinlein is the only other exception. I have yet to read an "In Death" novel that I felt as if I could comfortably set it down without some (large) part of me anxiously wanting to see how it ends - even the ones where I'm already 100% certain I know "who dunnit," - and as soon as I've finished an "In Death" novel, I'm immediately craving the next. I reread Heinlein's entire collection about once a year, and what makes Nora Roberts (as JD Robb) unique in my world is that I can do the same with her "In Death" books as well. For someone who has literally read thousands of books by thousands of authors... someone who will reread anything on the bookshelf if there's nothing new at hand...I think it says a great deal that I will deliberately, annually, reread this series - and I can pour through two of the books a day because they're so engaging.

When you are able to write over 30 books, each of which I will stay up until dawn to finish just so I don't have to wait to find out how it ends... well... that's something special. My five-star review isn't just for Treachery, it's for the entire series... and it's for an author who is able to consistently roll out quality entertainment on a rather impressive schedule.

After all, isn't that why we read fiction? To be entertained? Roberts/Robb gives us that in spades.
