Unique & Compelling Science Fiction

B. T. Keaton’s debut science fiction novel, Transference, is unique, gritty, raw and runs the reader through a gamut of emotions. Transference starts right into the heart of the story on the first page with the interrogation of the main protagonist. No backstory, we have no idea who he is, where he is, but we do know he’s killed a man. The story opens in the first-person narrative and we come to find out this man is Barrabas Madzimure, or is he? He claims his real name is Thaniel Kilraven, and his soul or essence was transferred into the body of Madzimure against his will decades ago. The process of transference is commonplace for all in the dystopian future the novel is set in, It takes places using the mineral eridanium, mined on the prison planet Eridia, where we find out Madzimure is. Not accepting transference has dire consequences. Earth it is ruled by the Church (it is not any conventional Church, so no religious beliefs are attacked), centered in Neo York. The ruling prophet is Jovian, who controls transference by calling eridanium “venerated violet”, a mystical substance only he can wield. This allows him to control people, keep absolute power and control of their souls. The process can, however, be disastrous and begin to tamper with your own true memories. Those who do not want to transfer become outcasts, and if caught, can end up in the mining prison.
Transference is an excellent debut novel by B. T. Keaton. The transfer of souls to another body, the main plot of the book, was a unique and compelling science fiction. The pacing and prose were excellent. The reader was able to delve into the thoughts of several characters as it was all told in the first-person perspective. Nathaniel Kilraven was a well-developed protagonist who survives multiple traumas to finally do what he needs to in the end. The construction of the first-person narrative throughout the book was never confusing and filled in Kilraven’s life for the reader. In addition to Kilraven, the other characters were also well developed. Mr. Keaton nailed Jovian as the fanatical despot who truly believes what he is doing is for the betterment of humanity, thereby justifying anything he does. Transference was an excellent science fiction novel and I highly recommend it.

A gripping read, could not put my book down!!

Prepare to be captivated by Keaton's "Transference" from the moment you pick it up! In this dystopian world, the vile and corrupt Church employs a technique called "Transference" in order to exert control over their opposers. This method allows souls to transfer between different bodies, therefore allowing the Church to "silence" said opposers. The novel's protagonist, Barrabas Madzimure, alleged thief, victim of the Church, and victim of Transference, thusly holds the truth to the Church's many dark secrets. Through the lens of Barrabas, Keaton explores themes of immortality, corruption, religion, and familial values.

What especially stood out for me is B.T. Keaton's ability to subtly critique the system of religion without overplaying it, since this theme has been visited time and again historically in literature. I appreciated his subtle nods to the bible, such as Barrabas' connection to the prisoner mentioned in the New Testament, to the concept of the the mind, body & soul as we see in the employment of the transference technique. Keaton certainly delivered with his debut novel, and I look forward to seeing what he will come out with next!

Exciting New Sci-Fi Author!

B.T. Keaton has written a fantastic book that I highly recommend to any Sci-Fi fan! A winner of the prestigious Julius Vogel and Wishing Shelf awards weaves a masterful debut novel entitled "Transference". He explores the spiritual and moral pitfalls of "transference", the transfer of the soul from one body to another. You don't know who is really who at any given moment. So intriguing!

The downtrodden prince of thieves, Barrabas, has labored for 30 years on the Mad Max-style planet Eridania. Earth is controlled by a self-proclaimed god called The Prophet who runs The Church, a band of nefarious cloned soldiers who terrorize the population. The Prophet is searching for his arch-enemy, Thaniel Kilraven, who escaped on a ship carrying a precious commodity: Immortality. These opposing forces collide in a battle royale for the survival of Earth and the value of a single human soul.

Keaton introduces a cast of colorful characters, lightens the mood with humorous dialogue, and begs your psyche to dig deeper than your typical Dystopian fanfare. I highly recommend this book and I look forward to Keaton's next adventure!

Sweeping Dystopian Adventure

Transference by B.T. Keaton Barrabas, King of Thieves, realizes that not all is as it seems and he is a pawn in a bigger plan to control planet earth. He needs to find away off of the prison planet he’s on to assert his revenge on the megalomaniac, the prophet called Jovian, for everything that’s been stolen from him.

Sweeping in scope, this is a science fiction, dystopian odyssey that takes the reader from alien planets through space to a future earth where souls never die due to alien technology called Transference. But it has become a means to the ultimate abuse of power, except for one man who has nothing to lose to avenge those he loves to take down the once who’s pulling the strings: the prophet.

Strong writing and adventurous action, Keaton does a great job and building and maintaining tension. There was a bit too much exposition which at times made me lose focus, (a me issue)but overall, enjoyable.
