Years before, he had been an English major at Baltimore’s Loyola College and had always dreamed of writing a novel. His first effort, The Hunt for Red October —the first of the phenomenally successful Jack Ryan novels—sold briskly as a result of rave reviews, then catapulted onto the New York Times bestseller list after President Reagan pronounced it “the perfect yarn.” From that day forward, Clancy established himself as an undisputed master at blending exceptional realism and authenticity, intricate plotting, and razor-sharp suspense. He passed away in October 2013. Grant Blackwood is the New York Times bestselling author of the Briggs Tanner series ( End of Enemies , Wall of Night , and Echo of War ). He is coauthor of the #1 New York Times bestseller Dead or Alive , with Tom Clancy, and of the thriller The Kill Switch , with James Rollins. A U.S. Navy veteran, Grant spent three years aboard a guided missile frigate as an Operations Specialist and a Pilot Rescue Swimmer. He lives in Arizona, where he is working on his own stand-alone series starring a new hero.

Buyer Beware - contents do not match expectations!

If you are like me and looking for something to read and hoping somehow something could hold your interest like a good Jack Ryan Clancy book, please don't buy this one. I hated the whole thing. Jack Ryan Junior ordering Dingo Chavez around like he was some kind of jug-head lackey? Terrible!

The plot line is completely flat and unbelievable, When I read the "real" Clancy I felt like I was learning about so many real things. Here I just learned about the name of a few obscure streets in obscure places.

Since when did Jack Jr. become James Bond? Since when did he chose if he really wanted to listen to John Clark on the other end of the phone? Heresy! I felt like I was reading a male version of Charlies Angels and Jack would check in with "the Boz" now and then if he felt like it.

The whole book was an embarrassment to the franchise. I only finished it out of curiosity on how much worse it could get - and indeed it did keep getting worse. And worse.

This was kind of terrible

Definitely not an actual Tom Clancy novel. The plot was silly, the hero is a fool. It gave me something to do on a plane, but that is the only redeeming quality. Glad I only spent a few dollars on a used copy. This something you should get from a library for free.

Evident that Clancy didn’t write this.

I’ve read every Clancy Jack Ryan book 5-6 times until catching up to the story on this one. You can certainly tell that Tom Clancy didn’t write this. The cleverness of Clancy’s plot development, character development, story telling prowess and climax just aren’t there. I’ll continue my way through the series as I am a fan of the characters Clancy built, but this one is the only time I’ve been disappointed in on of these books.

Greaney should remain the author for the Clancy novels, not Blackwood.

I've loved all of Clancy's novels. I continued reading Blackwood's 'DEAD', then all of Greaney's and now I'm almost finished with this one. Blackwood isn't a fit at all to continue the Series. DEAD and this one don't represent the Series. I don't know why Blackwood is allowed to write under Tom Clancy's name. In my opinion Greaney does. Don't waste your time on this book.

Lacked a punch

This a typical, fast-read, unchallenging book that fit the bill for free-time fodder. It was not, however, exciting or riviting. This book seemed to lack the suspense and anticipation that other Jack Reacher scripts provided. There was lack of action and plot development - - no twists, nothing surprising. I really could not buy into the whole premise of the book. So there was a coup. Were we supposed to side with the revolutionary camp? How did we know they were legit or any better than the current regime?

Tom Clancy is dead

I've read every Tom Clancy fiction novel back to "Red October" to this book. This is definitely off kilter, boring, & I feel as though the author doesn't know Clark, Hendley, Jack Jr., etc. Jr. is an independent contractor in this story, off the umbilical cord of The Campus. Campus employees by what, the dozens? comb over intel, analyzing it, presenting it to Clark, who has extreme fielding experience & is the perfect Ops Mgr, along with Ding Chavez, never mentioned in this book. Jr. is in eastern Europe, & who IS used, from Hendley Assoc., is Gavin, Intel nerd extraordinaire, who would never speak to unknowns like Jr.'s new girlfriend, who by the way is untrained, & should never have been allowed in the field. (Intel gathering maybe.) I even think a foreign national was hearing Gavin on speaker, as well as a CIA NOC. How would that be ok with Clark & Hendley? Never! And Jack Jr., WHO IS PART OF A TEAM, is being given a long leash in this one. How he could have the operations maturity & be able to help a COUP in a Russian province, I will never know. AND HE RESCUED A KIDNAP VICTIM BY HIMSELF, vs. 5 kidnappers, WITH weapons. Sorry, this is a bridge too far for Tom Clancy's characters, who are well-developed, well-trained, & needful of John Clark & Ding Chavez as LEADERS. Jr. is no leader, not yet anyway, & to trust a new girlfriend so completely, after his last girlfriend, is not believable to me. Because of this book, I am not reading the next in the series. I also question why the book company plasters the great TOM CLANCY on a book written by an untested author, of Jack Ryan novels. (I have not read any of his other novels) Gotta say I am sad today. Tom Clancy is dead.
