Description

Alex Scarrow used to be a rock guitarist, then he became a graphic artist, then he decided to be a computer games designer. Finally, he grew up and became an author. He has written a number of successful thrillers and several screenplays, but it's YA fiction that has allowed him to really have fun with the ideas and concepts he was playing around with designing games. Alex lives in Norwich.

Features & Highlights

  • Liam O'Connor should have died at sea in 1912. Maddy Carter should have died on a plane in 2010. Sal Vikram should have died in a fire in 2026. But all three have been given a second chance - to work for an agency that no one knows exists. Its purpose: to prevent time travel destroying history . . . When Maddy finally unlocks fragments of the secret that Becks has been holding on to, the TimeRiders start to piece together their true purpose. Racing through time to connect the clues, the team discover a Mayan tribe and an ancient relic provides a vital link to the past . . . and future. But not all the TimeRiders can cope with the discovery, and one threatens to bring them all down if they can act out their revenge . . .

I enjoyed the last book so much I had high hopes for this one, however, I was disappointed. Much time is spent talking about and trying to decipher hieroglyphs often going over the same facts several times throughout the book. Sal disappears and the team have to forget their initial aim and try to rescue her, which entails a trip into chaos space for Maddy.

Am I wrong but isn't Maddy asthmatic? I've noticed in the last few books that she's been engulfed in smoke and encountering all sort of strong smells and musty atmosphere's and although the author has her catching her breath she never takes an inhaler. That's just a little aside and doesn't particularly effect the plot.

I found myself skim reading some of it in the hopes of reaching a more exciting part and finally it came. The last fifth is very exciting and worth the long wait. If the whole book had been this eventful I would not have been able to put it down.

I can't say much more without ruining the plot but my summary would be - starts with promise, disappointing in the middle, exciting ending.

One more for my collection

I have only read the first two in the series and loved them. I have cued the rest up for future reading as they are being published. Alex Scarrow's style in this series is perfect for young readers and even for us 'not so young'.
