Features & Highlights

  • Robin Monarch is a man with a complicated past and dangerous present. He's been a soldier, a CIA agent, a freelance operative but first and foremost, Robin Monarch is a thief of the highest order. Orphaned at twelve, Monarch originally stole for survival, then he stole for his friends and cohorts, now he steals to order, and to give back to the to the woman who saved his life many years ago.
  • With the help of his team, Monarch breaks into the legendary Christmas party of Beau Arsenault, a shady investor and behind-the-scenes player at the very highest levels of power politics. Arsenault is not above bending or breaking the rules if there's illicit profit to be made. Monarch has decided that those illicit profits will be better used to take care of orphans and street kids. Using the party as cover to break into Arsenault's secret vaults, Monarch comes away with two unexpected things. One is a bullet―he gets shot when he's caught trying to escape with tens of millions of negotiable instruments. The second is a lead on what might be his most audacious exploit ever. A previously undiscovered tribe in South America may well have the secret to the most sought after knowledge in history―that of eternal life. And Robin Monarch must use all his skills―as an operative, as a thief―to keep this secret from falling into the worst possible hands.

A GOOD READ - BUT SOME CONCERNS

My review of THIEF, by MARK SULLIVAN.

I wavered a bit between 3 and 4 stars, and for me it was really a 3 + star book. There was a lot I liked about it, but there were a few things that took my attention away from the story.

Things I liked -
The story was action packed and for the most part a fast read. The premise of a "thief" being the "hero" was a refreshing one.
I particularly enjoyed the portions of the story in the Amazon - Very vivid descriptions, great action, etc.
There were a few different focuses of action, but they all tied together well and contributed positively to the overall tightness of the story.
The bad guys were pretty contemptible.

Areas of concern:

The back-story was placed in several different segments throughout the book, and this made the read a bit choppy for me.
Our hero takes on superhero status a number of times, as some of his escapes (for example, the helicopter incident) defy any sense of reality. He is snatched from certain death at least 3-4 times throughout the book, and that got old for me.
The bedroom escapades of the main bad guy seemed totally unnecessary to me and I am not sure what value they provided. Maybe we're supposed to hate him even more? Very trite.

Overall, I was happy I read the book and even happier that it was available for take out at the local library. Recommended for those who enjoy fast paced action with plenty of confrontations and a strong, (almost superhuman at times) lead character.

In this series of 3 books

In this series of 3 books , which I read all 3 it gets to be somewhat predictable.
Although they are exciting by the 3rd book it gets crazier than the first 2 books.

Realistic characters! So very enjoyable.

Robin is such an interesting character. I admit, I like his masculinity. In a world where everything appears to getting blended, it is nice to see a clear distinction between males and females. Call me old fashioned, but I like manly men who are realistically portrayed as imperfect. I also like the strong female characters who aren't all fainting flowers. Excellent!

Probably the worst in the series

Probably the worst in the series. There are some gaping holes in the plot that just don't make sense. Like why would Monarch not consider the man he just robbed to be the one after him? After all, in the previous book he knew what this man was capable of and how deep his pockets were. I read about the first 1/4 then just skipped to the last chapter. By the end I was thinking the last line would be, "God bless us one and all."

Sullivan stole it!!!!!

Other than reading a James Patterson/Mark Sullivan novel previously, I had not read an independent Sullivan book. Liked Thief so much I am ordering his two previous Robin Monarch books. Great story line, outstanding writing and an easy, engrossing read. Like with other co-written Patterson books, I find the secondary writer as good as or, in this case, better than primary writer.
