Description

"They Speak with Other Tongues is one of the most life-changing books ever written."--David Wilkerson, founding pastor, Times Square Church, New York; author, The Cross and the Switchblade This classic work on the baptism with the Holy Spirit has inspired and changed millions worldwide. The story of one reporter's journey from skepticism to a life-changing relationship with God, it is filled with biblical and contemporary accounts of speaking in tongues. And it's a deeply personal and moving picture of how you, too, can walk in the power of the Spirit day by day. John Sherrill (1923-2017) and his wife, Elizabeth, co-authored numerous bestsellers--classics such as The Hiding Place, The Cross and the Switchblade and God's Smuggler --and traveled the world researching and writing articles and books. Longtime editors for Guideposts magazine, they also co-founded Chosen Books. The Sherrills have three grown children, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

A Classic - as relevant now as the day it was written

I first read "They Speak with Other Tongues" as a very young pastor, more than forty years ago. At the time I already believed in and practiced the gift of speaking in tongues. Still, I found this book to be a tremendous confirmation to my faith. It was especially interesting to me because the author was a non-Pentecostal and at that time the vast majority of people who spoke in tongues belonged to Classical Pentecostal churches. The Charismatic movement among mainline Protestant and Catholic churches was barely in its infancy. No doubt, this book served as a catalyst to arouse interest among non-Pentecostals in the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and thus helped birth the Charismatic renewal. Today, more than half of the Christians who speak with other tongues belong to non-Pentecostal churches.

I have read "They Speak with Other Tongues" several times over the years; on each of those occasions it has been a continuing inspiration. I've also bought many extra copies to share with friends.

Anyone who wants to learn more about the experience of speaking in tongues will find much of interest here. The author presents his story in an honest manner which is both unassuming and convincing. Those who speak in other tongues and those who are only curious about the practice will both benefit from reading this classic. Although dozens of books on the same subject have been written since this one, I know of none that have had as great an impact.

Talk about changing a persons perspective

This book totally caught me off guard. It examines the gift of speaking in tongues from the authors perspective and does an excellent job of convincing me that this gift is still being used in some areas that way God intended. Very well put together and compelling.

A Skeptic's Take

When I purchased this book I did it with a touch of reluctance. I attend an Assemblies of God church and truly believe in the gifts of the Spirit, however I found myself frustrated having never spoken in tongues personally. I am also deep rooted traditionalist and had a hard time separating my concerns with contemporary christian music and the Holy Spirit. I tell you that so you can understand the perspective I was coming from - I expected to write this off as overly emotional and lacking a real scholarly viewpoint.

Fortunately I obeyed as God directed me to read it as I found none of that.

What was inside was well-sought out and researched view of Speaking in Tongues that corresponds with sturdy Biblical analysis and the testimonies of countless believers from hundreds of years of history - particularly from 1850 onward. It taught me information about the Pentecostal movement I had never known. Further, it opened my eye to the true gift of Speaking in Tongues and all it entails.

Most importantly it shows the Holy Spirit and God's love as the true aim of any spiritual gifts. Tongues are not for tongues sake. Prophecy is not for prophecy's sake. They are all meant to bring us closer to God and further His will in our lives.

Terrific job by Mr. Sherrill!

A True Classic

Originally John Sherrill set out to explore the phenomenon of speaking in tongues from an objective, journalistic perspective. He found himself losing his objectivity when he became baptisted in the Holy Ghost. His life took on a whole new dimension as he was taught by the Spirit of God.

This book was written during the early stages of the Charismatic movement. Educated inquirers such as Sherrill, from a tradition where demonstrative worship was unknown, decided to explore the issue on his own. He became involved with the Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship International, and connected with God in a deeper way himself.

Sherrill researched the subject historically and found that speaking in tongues has endured for centuries, it just hasn't been openly acknowledged. He cites specifics.

In his candid manner, Sherrill discusses the dilemma he faced as he grappled with this leap of faith. He makes a convincing case for how much the Spirit has helped him pray for other people and get out of his self-centered comfort zone. This well-written, effectively-researched book documents a significant era in church history.

Well worth it

The author attacks the topic based from his personal experience. There are super-duper-Christian-police who will write this book off and say" you can't define the bible by experience", which is true. However, like any court case, you can find common denominators from various accounts which paint a fairly good picture of how things actually are and what actually occurred (Like the Gospels). They will also write this off because it does not have 1000 references, but remember, this is not meant to be a theological read, it's a first person account. Just my opinion.
