Description

"There are stunning descriptions of rampaging forest fires, majestic mountain ranges and violent storms inxa0THE WEIGHT OF NIGHT (Atria, paper, $16),xa0Christine Carbo’s rugged wilderness mystery set in Glacier National Park. It’s in depicting nature’s drama that Carbo’s writing thrives.” ― Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review “Engrossing…an intricate plot complements the compelling characters.” ― Publishers Weekly “Carbo creates a vivid setting and strong characters, as well as a stunning mystery. Fans of page-turning suspense will find this book impossible to put down.” ― RT Book Reviews “Carbo extols the beauty of her setting and provides sensitive character development.” ― Booklist Praise for Mortal Fall : " Compulsively readable." ― Publishers Weekly "If Mortal Fall were just a beautifully written, sharp-eyed procedural, that would be reason enough to read it. But Christine Carbo offers so much more in this fine second novel. It’s a study of flawed, compelling characters and the ghosts that haunt them. It’s also a fascinating look at the relationship of humans with the too-rapidly changing landscape of Glacier Park. And finally, it’s the tragic story of the forces that can shatter a family. This novel works on so many levels, all of them masterfully crafted." -- William Kent Krueger, New York Times bestselling author of Windigo Island“Carbo paints a moving picture of complex, flawed people fighting to make their way in a wilderness where little is black or white, except the smoky chiaroscuro of the sweeping Montana sky.” ― Publisher’s Weekly “ Mortal Fall is a terrific read. With a masterful hand, Christine Carbo guides her readers through an intriguing mystery full of complex relationships and smartly-developed characters. Her rich descriptions immerse you in the grandeur of Glacier National Forest as this riveting story unfolds. Christine Carbo should be a part of every mystery-lover’s personal library.” -- Allen Eskins, author of The Guise of Another“Carbo brings subtlety and sensitivity to the smallest of moments.” ― Booklist Praise for The Wild Inside : “...stays in your mind long after you’ve put the book down. I’m still thinking about it. Prepare to run the gamut of emotions with this fine treat of a story. Then, in the years ahead, be on the lookout for more from this fresh new voice in the thriller genre.” xa0 xa0 -- Steve Berry, New York Times bestselling author of the Cotton Malone series"Fans of Nevada Barr will love this tense, atmospheric thriller with its majestic Glacier National Park setting. The Wild Inside is a stunning debut!" -- Deborah Crombie, New York Times bestselling author of TO DWELL IN DARKNESS“An intense and thoroughly enjoyable thrill ride. Christine Carbo’s literary voice echoes with her love of nature, her knowledge of its brutality, and the wild and beautiful locale of Montana. The Wild Inside is a tour de force of suspense that will leave you breathlessly turning the pages late into the night.” -- Linda Castillo, New York Times bestselling author of THE DEAD WILL TELL“The brutality and fragility of Glacier National Park’s wilderness provides the perfect backdrop for this well-crafted, absorbing novel about the barbarities and kindnesses of the humans living on its edge. Christine Carbo is a writer to watch.” -- Tawni O'Dell, New York Times bestselling author of One of Us“Grizzly bears, murder, mauling, and mayhem mix in Carbo's debut novel. Ted Systead's past and present intersect in an unexpected—and chilling—manner against the incongruously gorgeous backdrop of Glacier National Park.” ― Kirkus Reviews “Sharp, introspective Systead is a strong series lead, and Carbo rolls out solid procedural details, pitting him against Department of the Interior bureaucrats. The grittiness of the poverty-wracked area surrounding Glacier plays against the park’s dangerous beauty in this dark foray into the wilderness subgenre. Put this one in the hands of those who enjoy Paul Doiron’s Mike Bowditch novels and Julia Keller’s Bell Elkins series.” ― Booklist Christine Carbo is the author of The Wild Inside, Mortal Fall, and The Weight of Night. Features & Highlights

  • On most days, the wilderness gave me peace. But not tonight.
  • In a land sculpted by glaciers, the forest is on fire. Thick smoke chokes the mountain air and casts an apocalyptic glow over the imposing peaks and vistas of Montana’s Glacier National Park. When firefighters are called in to dig firebreaks near the small town bordering the park, a crew member is shocked to unearth a shallow grave containing human remains. Park Police Officer Monty Harris is summoned to the site to conduct an excavation. But with an incendiary monster threatening to consume the town, Monty seeks help from Gretchen Larson, the county’s lead crime scene investigator. While the two work frantically to determine the true identity of the victim, a teenager suddenly disappears from one of the campgrounds in Glacier. Could the cases somehow be connected? As chances for recovery of the missing boy grow slimmer and the FBI finds only dead ends, Gretchen and Monty desperately race to fit all the pieces together while battling time, the elements, and their own unresolved inner conflicts.
  • The Weight of Night
  • is the latest novel in an award-winning series which “paints a moving picture of complex, flawed people fighting to make their way in a wilderness where little is black or white” (
  • Publishers Weekly
  • ). It is a gripping tribute to the power of redemption set against one of America’s most majestic and unforgiving landscapes.

and thought they were excellent. This one is also excellent

I read the first two novels, The Wild Inside and Mortal Fall, and thought they were excellent.
This one is also excellent.

Amid fire season in Glacier National Park, a boy vacationing there goes missing and the main character from Mortal Fall, Monty Harris, and a secondary character from both The Wild Inside and Mortal Fall, Gretchen Larson, who is a crime scene investigator, work to find the boy. In this third book, we learn a lot more about Gretchen and her past.

Gretchen’s past story captivated me, and so did the current mystery. The plot is intriguing, the character development is wonderful, and the descriptions of nature are beautiful. As another reviewer here mentioned, I agree that not only is this writer’s prose beautiful, she digs much deeper than C.J. Box or Nevada Barr. I am eagerly awaiting more books from this author.

Narcissist Norwegian

Gretchen, a narcissist Norwegian crime lab type, is the center of this novel. Oh, yes, there is a murdered person whose remains are discovered in the path of a massive forest fire, and a missing child. Gretchen turns out to suffer from an unusual pathology. That is not a spoiler as her pathology is a feature of the book and is revealed from the beginning paragraphs. If you find Gretchen and her pathology interesting, you will probably like this book. I don't and I didn't. The natural glory of a great national park that featured so centrally in Carbo's first two books is obscured by massive fires in this book. If you decide to skip this one, I don't think you'll regret it.

Mystery and Glacier Park a Gift!

I have the entire collection of Christine Carbo’s novels. She creates complex characters that the reader identifies with their lives. What I love best about her books is the rich descriptions of the Glacier Park wilderness. Like Louise Penny and William Kent Kruger, setting the mysteries in a local Ms. Carbo is so familiar with brings the reader into a region almost feels like you are visiting there.

Enjoyed it

This was my first Carbo book -- although it has many stock elements of a mystery thriller, I enjoyed it. Ms. Carbo has an engaging writing style, where she succinctly describes the motivation, feelings and consequences of character behavior. I liked the back and forth narration by the two main characters -- less monotonous that way. The plot had enough intricacies and twists to keep you engaged, but not too many to be mind-boggling. I'd like to read more of her books, but would prefer a different setting than Glacier.

Loved it!

This is the third Christine Carbo novel I've read (the other 2 in the series were great as well)! I'm so pleased with this book and am bummed that I finished it so quickly. The character development in this one was extremely captivating and I found myself thinking about this book and it's characters throughout my day. I'm excited to read the final novel in the series but am also dreading not having another Carbo book to pick up in the near future. I'll be watching for more great suspense novels to come from Christine in the future!

Read this book on your next trip to Glacier Park!

Christine Carbo's books are set in Glacier Park and the surrounding area. I love that Park and visit it a lot, so as I read her work I am constantly thinking "I've been there!' which is great fun! This book turned out to be prophetic, as the park had fires the year after it came out! So I guess you could say it was realistic! The characters in her books feel real, they are complicated human beings with issues. I enjoy that her characters have so much depth, and the stories are legit mysteries, with clues, and suspense, and everything you expect from a great mystery. Read this book on your next trip to Glacier Park, you won't be disappointed!
