Mediocre

I felt that because this book was so condensed, with history crammed in to meet the criteria that sometimes the timeline wasn't concise. It wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't well organized.

Required reading, sadly.

I purchased this book for a history class, but it is severely lacking in some of the most crucial details of early American history. If it's required reading, I hope you get a price that more closely resembles its true value. If you're simply interested in American history, you'll be selling yourself short.

The greatest example I can give regards the monetary policy of the early United States. It is well known that banking policy can make or break an entire empire, yet there is almost no mention of it in this text. It was an exceedingly important topic to the "Founders" and later presidents, culminating in one of the most important American struggles of the 1800s--Jackson's fight against the bank and the eventual elimination of the national debt--yet you won't hear about it here.

Also, the fight over the rights of the States is flushed of nearly all important aspects of the controversy, John Marshall being touted nearly as the savior of the Union.

I'm sorry, if you have to buy this. If it is required, your professor will probably squirm if you push him to follow the money.

Well Written & Easy-to-read

I had to buy this book for my college history class and although I'm not a huge fan of reading, I really enjoyed reading this book. Unlike many other plain and boring history books, this book actually makes history interesting and presents it in a well though-out manner. Rather than presenting the historical facts in bits and segments, Brinkley does a great job in presenting American history in an easy-to-read, continuous story.

Best history book ever!

I absolutely loved this text book, and I have never said before about any text book. I previously only had a passing interest in US history, but this book has opened my eyes to the vast, multifaceted, rich history our nation has. It presents all the important facts and figures, but also a great deal of important perspective. There are a lot of additional features and side commentary which cover the more contentious items, and how opinions and interpretations have changed over time.

This book gives a very complete view of America's past while presenting stories and facts in an objective manner. It never shies away from the truth, and lets the reader draw their own moral conclusions. It also reads more like a novel than a text book. I would rather "curl up" with this book than watch an hour of mediocre TV.

If your class requires this book, you're in for a treat. Be sure to thank your teacher.

No Online Access Card

Book came in new condition as expected, but does not include the online access card for the college course; or atleast mine didn't. Just a heads up for anyone expecting this, it would have been more cost effective to purchase it in my campus book store with the access card included...
