Description

Do you want to run a 5K this year or finish a triathlon next spring? Or are you starting your first fitness program because the doctor said you have to lose weight? Do you drink enough water, or overdo it on the carbo-loading? The Ultimate Fitness Log can assist you in tracking your fitness progress, whether you're concerned about nutrition, cardiovascular fitness, strength training, weight loss, or all four. Suzanne Schlosberg, coauthor of Weight Training for Dummies and Fitness for Dummies, says while she scoffed at keeping a personal diary in high-school English class, she finds fitness diaries extremely helpful for monitoring her training for the Northern California Death Ride bike race. Schlosberg starts with minichapters on how to use the log (including how to rate the intensity of your workouts), hints for finding your way among the health-club equipment, how to prevent workout-related injuries, and answers to frequently asked questions about cardio and strength-training exercises (like how to calculate your target heart rate--and how to use it). Then come six months worth of diary, with space for tracking time and distance for cardio; weight, sets, and reps for strength training; and space for nutrition notes. By monitoring your progress from day to day and month to month, you can more easily reach your goals. Inspirational quotes, fitness definitions (do you know what a "whipper" is to a rock climber?), and fitness tips are interspersed throughout the days to help keep you motivated. --Erica Jorgensen

An excellent workout log and information source

I just joined a gym and I'm really out of shape. This book really answered a lot of my questions about beginning an exercise program. It has a log where I can record the cardio exercises I did and the strength training (including weight lifted, sets and reps). There is also a place for nutrition notes. The layout is very straight forward and will allow me to track my progress over six months. On Mondays, I write my personal goals for the week and on Sunday, I write a weekly wrap-up, which really holds me accountable for those goals. This book really helps me to keep track of my progress in a concrete way. I highly recommend it.

Needs more room

It is titled a "Workout Log" and for that it delivers quite well. But it would be more convenient to keep all fitness information in one place instead of having separate logs. Would prefer it if each day was given a full page and there was room to jot down daily diet information. Maybe include a calorie chart and breast exam reminders to make it a complete womans fitness log. That said, it is currently the best of its kind that I've found - just think it could be even better

Great Log!

This log came oh-so close to getting a 5-star rating! UP SIDE: From the introduction "Why Keep a Log?" to the very end of the book where there are all sorts of charts to record your own personal records, this log has all the information I'm looking for in one place. How many calories did I burn in that aerobics class? Turn to page 153. What should I do if I get injured? Turn to page 45! It's all right there! DOWN SIDE: I agree with other reviewers... first, there's just not enough room to write everything down. Personally, I'd like more room for strength training, nutrition notes, and perhaps a small section where I can jot down how my day went overall. A combination fitness log/mental health jornal! A page a day would be able to accommodate all that. Second, the log itself needs to buff up! I take this book with me everywhere...after only a month and a half, it's falling apart! I would definitely be willing to spend more money for this book if it had a more durable cover and back and a stronger wire spiral binding. Other than that...I love it!

Great idea - needs a little tweaking

I think that this workout log is indispensable for everyone -those just getting into a workout routine to those who are in serious training. Five stars for the information and the idea, but 4 stars because there's just not enough room for notes, and it has a tendency to fall apart after a while. Like someone mentioned previously, a page a day would be ideal.

We swear by it!

I bought this log when it first came out and it became my best friend. Before the log I did not work out regularly, but using this log, shows my peaks and valleys and encourages me to keep going. My husband was so impressed with my progress he bought one too (I was surprised since it had a woman on the cover!) he has many logs for his hiking, etc. and he thinks this is the best of all the log-books he uses. And now we're about to start our 3rd log book! Thanks to Suzanne Schlosberg for creating an easy, comprehensive work-out log!

Very efficient motivator

I found that logging cardio and lifting workouts in this diary was a tremendous motivator for me to not skip a workout. I love the layout: Daily Cardio, lifting and nutrition log, weekly wrap-up to determine if you met your weekly goals, separate personal record page and the big picture (6 month goals). The only negative is that 2 days are on a page (6 inches X 9 inches). I would make the book bigger. I don't think I would devote 1 day per page. Also, are the training tips / Sportspeak on every other page really necessary?

Helps Descipline You

I recently started going to the gym and this log is such a a great thing. It helped me keep track of everything I did and also when I wanted advise from a trained this helped in his analysis of what I was doing wrong and right. He was able to help me make adjustments in the workout, make sure I would not hit a plateau hard. I recommend this book to anone who is serious about working out. This log aided in me losing about 25 lbs.

Almost Perfect

I, too, have only minor complaints with with thiis workout journal. I am starting my fourth journal, and would love to see a little more space for writing how my day went. I would rather do it all in one place! I would also love to see a tougher cover, with a stronger spine, and tear resistant pages. This is the BEST workout log I have found, and I have tried many. It might be good to have two versions, the current one for beginners, and a version for advanced exercisers without all the basic information in the front, therefore leaving room for more writing space. Both of my teenage daughters are no using this journal. I have bought six, so far. I love seeing my goals become reality. Thanks, Suzanne!

Good Novice Log

I have used this log for 10 weeks now and have found it useful. However, for anyone beyond a beginner, there is just not enough space for information. With just 12 strength training lines, it is just not enough. Many of us train Abs & legs with another body part daily. This easily adds up to 20+ different exercises daily. Also the Nutrition Notes should be expanded to a full daily food chronolog. This will aid in seeing which foods help us train better. I dont like keeping seperate logs. I too would pay more for a bigger more complete log. I would also like to see a comment column for each exercise line item; were the reps spotter aided; intensity level; etc. Ideally a software version would be perfect. Especially for Palm Pilots!
