Description

Praise for books in this treasury:"Tolkien at his relaxed and ingenious best"The Times "[Roverandom] is an old-fashioned story, yet it still speaks freshly today… would leap to life when read aloud to a child"Independent “[Smith of Wootton Major] may be compared to the most delicate miniature but it is one of a rare kind: the more closely it is examined the more it reveals the grandeur of its conception. Whoever reads it at eight will still be going back to it at eighty” New Statesman J.R.R.Tolkien (1892-1973) was a distinguished academic, though he is best known for writing The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, plus other stories and essays. His books have been translated into over 60 languages and have sold many millions of copies worldwide.

Features & Highlights

  • De luxe boxed gift set of Tolkien’s most popular and charming tales; full of wit and humour, giants, dragons, magic and more, they are collected together for the first time and will delight readers of all ages.
  • Farmer Giles did not look like a hero. He was fat and red-bearded and enjoyed a slow, comfortable life. Then one day a rather deaf and short-sighted giant blundered on to his land…
  • The Adventures of Tom Bombadil collects hobbit-verses from the ‘Red Book’ and other poems relating legends and jests of the Shire at the end of the Third Age.
  • Smith of Wootton Major tells of the preparation of the Great Cake to mark the Feast of Good Children and the magical events which follow.
  • Roverandom is a real dog who is magically transformed into a toy and is forced to seek out the wizard who wronged him in order to be returned to normal. The story was written to console Tolkien's four-year-old son, Michael, who lost a beloved toy dog on the beach.

The stories are classic and the books are just beautiful and well bound to boot

Outstanding! The stories are classic and the books are just beautiful and well bound to boot. The text size is fine for reading, unlike the tiny font size of "The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: Deluxe Pocket Boxed Set". (nice books, but the font was so small I couldn't imagine actually reading them. The Tolkien Treasury, on the other hand is totally readable and I like that they're not just the stories (and poems), but they include lots of commentary, notes and appendices. They just feel good in my hands, look good to the eye, and read well. I've been getting interested in binding lately, too and I've seen reviews that call the binding "OK", but to this novice they are solid! I broke them all in properly just to be sure not to "break the spine" and no problems. They open well, not too tight, and are Smyth sewn (of course), so they should last. Just very nice.

Great Tolkien Box-Set

Great set of lesser known Tolkien works. They're also beautiful, and well-made books (though the books are not very big). My experience with the seller was smooth, and the item arrived safely packaged, and in "like new" condition, as expected. I've read excerpts of the books themselves (so far) and the stories are really good--after all, it's Tolkien. If you're a fan or collector, this box set is a beautiful addition to your library.

Tolkien my son’s favorite

Got this for my son for a Christmas. He is a huge Tolkien fan. I was searching Tolkien’s library and found this box set and new he didn’t have it in his library and new he’d love it. He’s 23 by the way. His special Mom gift that he gets every year.

Gorgeous

These things are stunning in person. They are small, a little larger than those light blue macmillan hardcover editions of books which are everywhere. I like the size a lot. I mostly just want to compliment the shipping, because they were shrink wrapped, covered with styrofoam, and placed on two layers of boxes. This ensured they arrived without the slightest scratch. A lot of thought and care went into this.

Delightful Pocket Volumes, with Readable Text

I was a bit nervous ordering this collection because "pocket volume" editions of books sometimes end up with text that you'd need a magnifying glass to read. But I went ahead in large part due to the wonderful artwork from Pauline Baynes that adorned the case and books. It has been a goal of mine to collect editions of Tolkien's works that have cover art (or illustrations) outside of those who influenced the Peter Jackson films (which I love, but which have had the unfortunate effect of "homogenizing" how the wider corpus is visualized).

Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised. The text is highly readable (likely around size 10), certainly aided by the shorter length of these books. The smaller size also works well for reading with my children. All four books feel well-made and the cover art truly is quite stunning. The included case is very sturdy (maybe even sturdier than the case for my Lord of the Rings volumes).

Sure to be a wonderful addition to any Tolkien fan's library.

These books are tiny

From now on I always check the description. Beautiful artwork but I can’t really appreciate it at half the size.

Really nice set!

just got them so didn't got to read them yet but I can review the quality:
the binding and printing quality are good. the box is strong and will keep them safe together and the art is beautiful.
the only thing that was wrong is that one of the dustcovers was folded in the lower part in the box, probably who packed it there didn't noticed, nothing big.

No damage despite buying overseas

Perfect condition. I was slightly worried since it was coming from overseas, but it wasn’t damaged at all.
