  • The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England
  • . The past is a foreign country -- this is your guide. We think of Queen Elizabeth I as 'Gloriana': the most powerful English woman in history. We think of her reign (1558-1603) as a golden age of maritime heroes, like Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Richard Grenville and Sir Francis Drake, and of great writers, such as Edmund Spenser, Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare. But what was it actually like to live in Elizabethan England? If you could travel to the past and walk the streets of London in the 1590s, where would you stay? What would you eat? What would you wear? Would you really have a sense of it being a glorious age? And if so, how would that glory sit alongside the vagrants, diseases, violence, sexism and famine of the time? In this book Ian Mortimer answers the key questions that a prospective traveller to late sixteenth-century England would ask. Applying the groundbreaking approach he pioneered in his bestselling

  • , the Elizabethan world unfolds around the reader. He shows a society making great discoveries and winning military victories and yet at the same time being troubled by its new-found awareness. It is a country in which life expectancy at birth is in the early thirties, people still starve to death and Catholics are persecuted for their faith. Yet it produces some of the finest writing in the English language and some of the most magnificent architecture, and sees Elizabeth's subjects settle in America and circumnavigate the globe. Welcome to a country that is, in all its contradictions, the very crucible of the modern world.

Fascinating Facts

I really enjoyed Ian Mortimer's previous book The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England: A Handbook for Visitors to the Fourteenth Century and this was a welcome sequel. We all know who Queen Elizabeth was, Shakespeare and Sir Walter Raleigh but this goes much deeper into ordinary life. Such as, what would someone have had for dinner, what underwear would they have worn and how much would they have earned? It's these little details that make history so interesting and there are lots of them here.

There are some really entertaining bits here, such as the chapter on how to dress and the fact that Elizabethans thought mushrooms for for elves to sit under. It is also very dramatic and human as well, there is great pity for the poor people and the section on justice is quite gruesome in places. Ian Mortimer paints a really vivid picture of life in Elizabethan times and this is essential reading for anyone interested in history and especially for those needing to do some research for that time.

I hope there will be another, the eighteenth century or Victorian perhaps?

Food for the imagination

I loved reading this book because I could visualize my ancestors walking the streets of London, see what they were wearing, eating, smelling, how they treated one another and what they did day to day. I'd previously read the Guide to Medieval England and asked my daughter for Elizabethan England for Christmas.

It took a while to get used to having no narrative in Medieval England but I was prepared for this book. It's all description and there's so much detail I could see the people, the towns, countryside, I could almost think what they were thinking, and certainly emphasized with them in places.

This is a true traveler's guide with tips to "fit in" with the times. What to wear, what one would expect to eat, where to stay, and choosing entertainment are just part of planning a trip back to the turn of the centuries, 16th to 17th.

I liked these two books of Mortimer's so much I ordered four more by him, including Edward III and Henry IV.

An Entertaining and Valuable Guide

As I am fascinated by time travel stories, I'm very aware of the problems of 'passing' as an ordinary citizen of the time frame one wishes to visit. This book will keep me from being burned at the stake -- provided I can remember all of the information Mortimer includes, such as how to find an inn (and how many others will share your bed) to social cues I'd better remember, to what I can expect to eat. This book is clearly written, an invaluable tool for writers or those otherwise intending to visit Elizabethan England.

The Good Old Days in Elizabethan England!

A fascinating book about everyday life in Elizabethan England - mid 1500's to early 1600's. If you have ancestors in England in that era, this is good book to fill out the stories of their lives. It tells about their homes, their food, medicine, entertainment, clothing and manners. If you enjoy history, it's a fun read about that era.

Fabulous author!

Sorry this is for his Medieval book. But no matter. I absolutely LOVE Ians books! I'm mad I really can't afford to buy this one...even used because of shipping. Fabulous writing. Historical fiction is a huge fave of mine...and this is the best of both. Some history some fiction that is so intriguing and educational without being the least bit boring. I have to find some place where I can get them cheaper. You get to "be" there without suffering the whole mad package! It was far from an easy existence but it is captivating and reminds us of how far we have come and to be careful of regression. Thanks Ian!🇬🇧
