Features & Highlights
The #1
New York Times
–bestselling author proves that he is indeed “a master of suspense” in this thriller of a covetous clergyman (
The Washington Post
).
Joshua Bigg, an investigator for a Manhattan law firm, usually spends his days tracking down witnesses and verifying clients’ alibis. Ironically, Bigg is quite short, and uses his boyish looks to coax information from his targets. The newly promoted agent gets the chance to show his mettle when he probes the disappearance of one client and the suspicious suicide of another. Professor Yale Stonehouse left his apartment one night, without saying anything to his wife, and never returned. Sol Kipper plunged to his death from the top floor of his Upper East Side townhouse. With little to go on, Bigg enlists the help of a cop, and uncovers a shocking connection between the two cases: a corrupt clergyman who preys on the lonely and bereaved. Desperate to stop the stone-cold killer who uses religion to mete out his own brand of justice, Bigg has to prove that no one is above God—or the law.

Throwback private eye story
I enjoyed this book. It was actually published in 1980. That plus the language and mannerisms make this feel like a 50s throwback private eye novel when read in 2018. Sanders may error slightly on over-description, but it does also aid to the time-capsule-like quality of reading this book almost 40 years after it first came out. I found Josh Bigg an interesting character and, although the mystery is relatively simple to guess, watching Bigg and Percy figure it out was entertaining.

Dynamite and small packages...
Five feet three and three eighths inches. That is the height of the intrepid investigator in this wonderful story. This book was loaned to me by a friend, and I could not put it down. Joshua Bigg is the name of our detective. He is unlicensed, and is employed by a legal firm. With very little experience under his belt, he still manages to make a big splash, while working on what he first believes are two unrelated cases, given him by two senior partners in his firm. In a mild, unassuming way, he not only is able to tie the cases together, but find a couple of murderers, who also bully, blackmail, and beat many of the people in the book. Joshua is able to make many friends, because in his own experience, he has learned that it serves not much purpose to throw his negligible weight around. If you read this story, I can guarantee you will be cheering for his success all the way to the end.
Although this book is set in modern time, it strikes a very familiar, old timey memory with me, and I think about all the nights I spent reading about Archie Goodwin and his adventures. I don't know if Mr. Sanders would receive this remark kindly, but many memories of Archie and Saul were evoked while reading this story. I do not know if he will write, or has written, another book featuring Josh Bigg, but I certainly hope so!

Charming Tale with Vivid Characters
I've read a number of Sanders's mysteries and found this one particularly engaging, especially for the well-wrought character studies and the fact that he tied all the loose ends together in the final scenes. His books make for enjoyable, light entertainment. This one kept me guessing about how the protagonist would succeed, as he was bound to do, until the end. The plot device of using a young investigator, new to the profession yet diligent in his pursuit of the culprits, gave the story line added dimension..

Excellent character studies, always exciting. Sanders has succeeded again
It is a good read. I hate to see it all end. Having read most of Sanders novels, I have never been disappointed.

Quirky.
It's a long read. It would be 100 pages shorter if Sanders left out all the Minuit details of what everyone wore and what they ate. The characters are all a bit quirky, they all have odd names. No Bob Smith in this story, perhaps because it's in a NY Law firm? Our hero is 5'3" and he's sensitive of his shortcomings. (sorry).
The story plods along as Joshua Biggs, our hero, investigates the disappearance of a client. He has a heart of gold, but needs to get tough in his search for justice.
There's so many side stories if every character was fully explained, it would be 1000 pages long.
I was bothered by the ending. Will no one meet justice? What happened?
I walked away feeling sad.

Lawrence Sanders' books are always worth reading; the style is captivating; the irony is provocative; and the fictional events are so close to reality one wonders whether the story was not something that happened in his past or the past of an acquaintance.
