  • The Lost and Found Bookshop
  • An accomplished storyteller returns with her biggest, boldest, most entertaining novel yet—a hilarious, heartfelt story about books, love, sisterhood, and the surprises we discover in our DNA.
  • Maggie, Eliza, and Tricia Sweeney grew up as a happy threesome in the idyllic seaside town of Southport, Connecticut. But their mother’s death from cancer fifteen years ago tarnished their golden-hued memories, and the sisters drifted apart. Their one touchstone is their father, Bill Sweeney, an internationally famous literary lion and college professor universally adored by critics, publishers, and book lovers. When Bill dies unexpectedly one cool June night, his shell-shocked daughters return to their childhood home. They aren’t quite sure what the future holds without their larger-than-life father, but they do know how to throw an Irish wake to honor a man of his stature.
  • But as guests pay their respects and reminisce, one stranger, emboldened by whiskey, has crashed the party. It turns out that she too is a Sweeney sister.
  • When Washington, DC based journalist Serena Tucker had her DNA tested on a whim a few weeks earlier, she learned she had a 50% genetic match with a childhood neighbor—Maggie Sweeney of Southport, Connecticut. It seems Serena’s chilly WASP mother, Birdie, had a history with Bill Sweeney—one that has remained totally secret until now.
  • Once the shock wears off, questions abound. What does this mean for William’s literary legacy? Where is the unfinished memoir he’s stashed away, and what will it reveal? And how will a fourth Sweeney sister—a blond among redheads—fit into their story?
  • By turns revealing, insightful, and uproarious,
  • The Sweeney Sisters
  • is equal parts cautionary tale and celebration—a festive and heartfelt look at what truly makes a family.
  • "Dolan uses her experience in podcasting with her own sisters to craft believable women characters who worry about real problems and use wry humor to push through dark moments . . . . A warmhearted portrait of love embracing true hearts."—

Loved it!

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the relationship between the sisters and how each personality came through and ended up helping in unique ways at the end. It was interesting how each character had their own issues to deal with but then had the added situation to work through. Families!! Sisters!!

Those Solid Gold Sister Bonds

Lian Dolan’s third novel The Sweeney Sisters stayed with me for weeks after I finished the book. Unlike Dolan’s first two effervescent novels, The Sweeney Sisters carries a melancholy undertone. And this entirely makes sense because the premise bringing the adult sisters together involves the death of their father, a celebrated author in the mold of a 20th century literary alpha male, and the family secrets that emerge in the wake.

I found The Sweeney Sisters a highly affecting novel. This book grapples with weightier themes than Dolan’s earlier works, but her hallmark writing style - so engaging - remains. Well developed and rounded characters and realistic dialogue are supplemented with perfectly captured and telling details. So we see the various characters sport a Marimekko scarf, Papagallo espadrilles, and an Escada ensemble (fashion signposts reminiscent of the Gunne Sax dress in Elizabeth The First Wife). I love how Dolan paints word images and throws in real people and events. Her deft plotting, always working on multiple levels, succeeds here too. Of course the main thread involves the newly discovered fourth sister, a search for a missing memoir that may explain her, and how each of the three original Sweeneys handles these developments. Separate subplots involving the sisters provide a deeper dive into their stories which further illuminate their relationship with one another. Their personalities are distinct and readers may find the sisters to be likable, relatable, frustrating, irresponsible, aloof, self-absorbed, dynamic, or any combination, at once or throughout. We see scenes in which one sister engages in hurtful behavior towards the others, but in very real fashion, the sisters always come together to close ranks against perceived outsiders. Like the lavish cheese board spread offered to guests at the pivotal gallery opening scene, readers will find much to savor. The Sweeney Sisters tells a contemplative story that ultimately celebrates sisters and their bond.

(Note the proofers missed a couple of typos: second line from bottom of pg. 102 “He father wrote about …” and middle of pg. 208 “Bill Sweeney was a not a reliable person.”)
