Description

Review “A spectacular book that brings together a selection from the cult director’s archives and highlights his relentless pursuit of perfection.” ― Libération About the Author Alison Castle received a BA in philosophy from Columbia University and an MA in photography and film from NYU/International Center of Photography. She is editor of photography, film, and design titles, including Some Like It Hot, The Stanley Kubrick Archives, Linda McCartney. Life in Photographs, and Marc Newson. Works.

Features & Highlights

  • In 1968, when Stanley Kubrick was asked to comment on the metaphysical significance of 2001: A Space Odyssey, he replied: “It’s not a message I ever intended to convey in words. 2001 is a nonverbal experience… I tried to create a visual experience, one that directly penetrates the subconscious with an emotional and philosophic content.”
  • Now available as part of our Bibliotheca Universalis series, The Stanley Kubrick Archives borrows from the director’s philosophy. From the opening sequence of Killer’s Kiss to the final frames of Eyes Wide Shut, it allows the masterful visuals of Kubrick’s films to impress through a sequence of compelling, mesmerizing stills. We uncover Kubrick’s creative process through fascinating archival material, including set designs, sketches, correspondence, documents, screenplays, drafts, notes, and shooting schedules.
  • Accompanying the visual and archival material are essays by noted Kubrick scholars, articles written by and about Kubrick, and a selection of Kubrick’s best interviews. The result is a visual, archival, and scholarly journey through masterworks of 20th-century cinema and the meticulous mind of the director behind them.

Very nice compact edition of this great book!

Very nice compact edition of this great book! I've had the original $200 version and the later, smaller $69 version (still too big in my opinion) and I like this one the best. Easier to hold and read..you don't need a table or a pillow in your lap like with the others. OK, some pictures are smaller, but they did a good job reformatting everything into the new design. I think there are less film frames from the movies, but that was one thing I didn't like about the old versions..half the book is frame grabs. I don't mind some, but anyone buying the book is a fan who owns the films like me and doesn't need stills in a book anyway. The price is so cheap, as well. Now, please do the James Bond Archives book in this smaller format, please.

Kubrick's Vaults Are Finally Open To Filmdom. A Must-Have for EVERY Kubrick Fan. Don't miss this One.

I know the phrase "Must-Have" has been so overused as to to become meaningless, but in this case, it is more than applicable.

Kubrick was notoriously protective of the research materials he collected for his films. As a Kubrick devotee - and all devotees of The Master's work will attest - I have long wished for the opportunity for a peek "behind the scenes," an examination of the mind behind the films. A glimpse into the process

This book provides that glimpse. It's quite thorough, and 95% of the stuff you will see here is comprised of actual Kubrick notes, script variants, and process documentation - stuff we have never scene. He was very protective of his films throughout the production process, but - surprisingly against the urban myths that surround the man - he was far more open in the process than we have been led to believe.

I know it's only a very thin sliver of the amount of material in the Kubrick Archives - he kept everything - but still it allows us to peek behind the curtains. To stand behind and beside the man as he works out his vision.

Lots of bang for your buck!

A must have for Kubrick fans!
This is a huge, well put together, hardcover book. Packed full with Kubrick handwritten and typed ideas, notes, script pages, and more. Covering all of his films. Lots of behind the scenes photos.
All for 15 bucks? What do you have to think about? But it!

Superb Companion To Director's Films

This thick, beautiful, "shiney", and deeply informative book dedicated to the films of the prodigious perfectionist director. Details all his masterpieces, even the ones he never got to make. Filled with an abundance of film stills, behind the scenes photos, posters, film stats and cast and crew, anecdotes, and quotes, and of course a fascinating and scholarly essay on all his works Paints a vivid portrait of a notoriously difficult, visionary, intellectual master film maker, innovator and creator of some of cinema's absolute greatest and most iconic masterpieces. As a fan of the director's works I was thrilled at the quality and amount of content. Highly recommended. Essential for fans. Also recommended Taschen's Alfred Hitchcock: The Complete Films.

Huge value in a tiny book

I have the original Archives book and while I love the book and it's nice to look at the big photos, it's not exactly practical to bring out and read. This book is much easier to the articles and it fits nicely on a shelf. I also don't have to wear out my big book.

I would saw that this book has the most value I've seen out of any film book I've purchased. It doesn't feel cheap either and the photos are high quality.

It doesn't have the stills in the beginning like the big book, but for the price, you should pick it up. Worth picking up even if you're not a huge Kubrick fan as well.

I do not like paper covers

The book itself is great, but I'm not into the paper cover that it comes with. The colors of spine were faded away during delivery. I decided to not purchase books from this edition of Taschen.

Great price, great format, excellent book

This is an incredible book, even for long-time fans like myself who thought that they knew all that was to be known about Kubrick's films.
I much prefer the smaller size of this book, which is the same size as a medium-sized paperback book. Although the book's size is MUCH smaller, it has considerably more pages and has been reformated so well that the size of text and images isn't nearly as affected as you'd think, and many of the images are the same size as in the large sized book (or close). No squinting for me.
You can pay $70 or more for the large format book, but $25 or less for this smaller, more convenient size seems an absolute no-brainer to me.
If I HAD to list any complaint - and it would just be very minor nit-pick - I wish there had been fewer stills from the movies so that even more space could be had for promotional posters, of which there is surprisingly little , but the book is 850 pages, so it's not as if I felt shortchanged in the least bit. One of the best price for the value books I've ever purchased.

my grandson said it was wonderful

My grandson's birthday gift and though he is 17, was so excited. His words were, omg, you gave me something so great that I didn't know I wanted. :) If you have a Stanley Kubrick fan anywhere, this is a book they will love for years to come.

Great Book for Kubrick Nuts

This tells Kubrick's story from the beginning to the end! The actual book itself is rather small but overall, it is a long read with great stories about the mythic Kubrick inside!
