Description

Bill Pronzini is simply one of the masters. He seems to have taken a crack at just about every genre: mysteries, noirish thrillers, historicals, locked-room mysteries, adventure novels, spy capers, men's action, westerns, and, of course, his masterful, long-running Nameless private detective series, now entering its fourth decade, with no signs of creative flagging. He's also ghosted several Brett Halliday short stories as Michael Shayne for Mike Shayne's Mystery Magazine, and has managed to collaborate with such fellow writers as John Lutz, Barry Wahlberg, Collin Wilcox and Marcia Muller. Still, if he never ventured into fiction writing, his non-fiction work, as both writer and editor, would still earn him a place in the P.I. genre's Hall of Fame. Besides his two tributes to some of the very worst in crime fiction (what he calls "alternative classics"), Gun in Cheek and Son of Gun in Cheek, and one on western fiction (entitled Six Gun in Cheek, naturally), he's the co-author (with Marcia Muller) of 1001 Midnights. The Mystery Writers of America have nominated him for Edgar Awards several times and his work has been translated into numerous languages and he's published in almost thirty countries. He was the very first president of the Private Eye Writers of America, and he's received three Shamus Awards from them, as well as its Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987.

Features & Highlights

  • "A skilled writer working at the top of his ability."—
  • Denver Post
  • In his first chronicled adventure, the Nameless detective hires on to handle the ransom payoff in a kidnapping case. Financier Louis Martinetti doesn't trust the police to deal with the man who snatched his 9-year-old son from his military prep school, nor is it clear that he trusts the members of his own household. On the appointed evening, Nameless takes a briefcase that contains $300,000 in cash to a secluded location chosen by the kidnapper. Then all hell breaks loose.

Meet the Detective Who Shall Not Be Named

This first book in the Nameless Detective series introduces the San Francisco-based private investigator as he is hired to act as the drop-off man for a kidnapping payoff. It seems straightforward enough but when things don’t quite go as planned with the exchange and the case spirals wildly as the detective artfully works out what the heck just happened.

This is very much an introduction to the detective and we quickly get an understanding of what makes him tick. He is a fan of pulp fiction books, he is dangerously out of shape and he is in a relationship that appears doomed from the start. In short, he’s a guy that you really want to get to know better.

And we do get to know him better in all things…except his name.

The story is well told and the mystery around the kidnapping and the failed money exchange is nicely constructed. It also allows the detective the chance to demonstrate that he is a savvy investigator who can find, follow and interpret clues with the best of them.

There is little wonder the series has become one of the centrepieces of the modern hardboiled genre. It is a quick read with snappy dialogue, a more than capable main character and a mystery that is intriguing from the first page.

Looking forward to reading more Nameless Detective

Excellent intro to this series. One of those plots that leads you to believe you know who-done-it, then something happens that proves that theory wrong, and by the end there's been yet another surprise.

Kidnapper found

This is the story of an X-policeman who becomes a detective. He loves pulp fiction and admires the detectives he reads about. His approach to life is uncomplicated, remove the bad guys and fight for what is right. He has a good reputation, but he only gets enough clients to hobble along financially. This does not dissuade him from continuing to do good. His approach does not go over well with his lady who thinks he's like a kid playing a super hero role that doesn't fit him. In this story a child is kidnapped and he is hired to complete the drop off of the ransom money. In the process he gets hurt and lands in the hospital and the child is not returned as it appears the wrong person may have taken the money leaving another man dead at the scene. Nameless is asked to continue on by the man who loaned the mark the money to try and track down the kidnapper. He solves the case. I liked the story and will read the next one.
