This book discusses crucial current issue mainly people specifically newer generations suffer, which is low self-esteem. The author did a great job explaining what actually self-esteem entails and that it is not in isolation from other important personal traits as self-assertiveness and responsibility for example. additionally, it contains plenty of exercises to do in order to enhance each of the mentioned six pillars. The only pitfall from my perspective is the language the book written with. It is kind of recondite, the author usually used long sentences and the vocabulary is not common at all. Maybe because I am not native English speaker, I feel his language is difficult. all in all, it is a nice book.

An Uplifting Journey into the Roots of Psychology

Nathaniel Branden is considered by many to be one of the pioneers of the self-esteem movement. Precisely that means he was one of the core influences in bringing about the importance of self-esteem (or lack thereof) in psychological issues. Branden has written many books on the subject with this one representing the total collection of all his prior thoughts.

Branden stresses the importance of discovering that the root of self esteem is an internal evaluation. Letting self esteem be dictated by external forces such as the opinions of others is a recipe for problems as it gives up control to our own happiness. The importance of maintaining this control ourselves, put best in Branden's own words, "lies not merely in the fact that it allows us to feel better but that it allows us to live better - to respond to challenges and opportunities more resourcefully and more appropriately...I have come to think of positive self esteem as, in effect, the immune system of consciousness, providing resistance, strength, and a capacity for regeneration." Self esteem is not a substitute for knowledge and skills or many other facets of importance, but as Branden illustrates a low self esteem offers an unnecessary burden on our lives thus making a healthy self esteem essential.

Branden is a logical writer who presents firm premises and clear paths to his conclusions. He values ambition, integrity, respect and the importance of ingenuity in human evolution. Branden caters to the potential greatness within us rather than a focus on simply accepting deficiencies. He doesn't suggest disowning our shortcomings but presents a potentially better path by emphasizing the positive aspects of a strong self esteem. If you seek an uplifting journey into the roots of psychology, there is no doubt Branden's work will be of interest.

Great book

Definitely the best books on self-esteem I've ever read, the author really knows his stuff. He asserts that self-esteem is a by-product of practicing the 6 pillars of self-esteem which are: The practice of living consciously, The practice of self-acceptance, The practice of self-responsibility, The practice of self-assertiveness, The practice of living purposefully and The practice of personal integrity. One of my favorite quotes from the book is this simple yet powerful gem
"Self-esteem is an intimate experience. It occurs in our inner most being. It is what I think and feel about myself, not what someone else thinks and feels about me."
Along with the six pillars the author also covers self-esteem at work, parents effect on their childs self-esteem and also school teachers effect on a childs self-esteem. This is a great resource that will send you on many streams of introspective thought and contemplation. Be sure to have a handy notebook with you as you read to your jot down your thoughts.

Enlightening

Branden's *brilliant* sentence-stem exercises allow you to explicate your own hidden knowledge and mature into an independent and efficient personality. I think I'm not alone in considering this to be an important work refining Objectivist ethics. If only follow through were as easy as the theory!

5 stars well deserved

Amazing book. Well written. Well structured. Clear presentation of the six pillars

1. The practice of living consciously
2. The practice of self-acceptance
3. The practice of self-responsibility
4. The practice of self-assertiveness
5. The practice of living purposefully
6. The practice of personal integrity

After the first 12 chapters the book gets a get heavy though. Yet there is something brilliant pages 246-255: A marvellous leadership lesson: Bring out the best of people

The end is fantastic: the nice surprise of the 7th pillar of self-esteem. Always will is needed. Perseverance is needed. Courage is needed. The energy for this commitment can only come from the love we have for our own life. This love is the beginning of virtue. It is the launching power that drives the six pillars. It is the seventh pillar of self-esteem

one of the best books on this subject

Branden is one of the pioneers in this field and this book contains the insights gained from a long career. The most important principles I took from this book are that thinking for oneself and living consciously are critical. In contract, the worst thing you can do is lie to yourself because reality isn't going to change based on wishful thinking or evasion.

Branden also points out that everyone has things they don't like about themselves, but he argues that you have to accept yourself. From that place, you can work on improvements.

Finally, Branden openly takes on the religious community inasmuch as they continue to peddle the doctrine of Original Sin (particularly on young people). I agree with Branden that this has to be the most anti-self esteem doctrine ever created and Branden is not afraid to say that. Paul Gehrman, Author, Kaleidoscope

Great book up until Chapter 13 where it starts getting into child rearing and then goes off onto teachers and subjects that I believe are irrelevant. The first part of the book is very useful and thought provoking and then chapter 13 and on it starts losing the plot. So that is where I stopped reading and was disappointed. I bought the book for my self growth not for raising kids.

So helpful during the pandemic.

At a moment where it is so easy to fall back into old habits, The Six Pillars helped snap me out of a negative cycle and reinforced many things I have been learning in therapy. It is an easy read if you have a grasp of the fundamentals of psychology. I also liked that he provided cultural contexts for his theory, specifically American culture. He also discusses gender, race, age, and lived experience as influences on our self-esteem, which I also appreciated.
