Description

The contradictions and compromises of Cromwell's Proctectorate are rather brilliantly woven into the thrilling plot . . . If her next outing is as riveting as this one, she could challenge CJ Sansoms' Shardlake for dominion of the crowded historical crime niche.― The Times S.G. MacLean has a PhD in history from Aberdeen University, specializing in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Scottish history. She has written four highly acclaimed historical thrillers set in Scotland, The Redemption of Alexander Seaton (shortlisted for the CWA Historical Dagger), A Game of Sorrows , Crucible of Secrets and The Devil's Recruit , and a series of historical thrillers set in Oliver Cromwell's London. The first and third books in the series, The Seeker and Destroying Angel , have won the CWA Historical Dagger and the second and fourth, The Black Friar and The House of Lamentations were longlisted for the same award. S.G. MacLean is married with four children and lives in Conon Bridge, Scotland. Follow her on Instagram @iwritemybike2

Engrossing, well crafted, and historically convincing

What an engrossing story! I couldn't put it down and ended up staying up way too late to finish it.
I wasn't hooked right away (I found the writing style at the beginning a bit off-putting, with its repeated lists of several sentences linked by commas, and I wasn't sure I wanted to root for a ruthless spy in the service of Oliver Cromwell), but by the end of chapter 2 I was intrigued. The historical setting is very convincing (I loved the description of 1600s London, crawling with spies and rebels, and its coffee houses, each of them patronised by different crowds brought together by their love of the new drink and by shared interests, plots, and schemes). It felt almost like a choral novel with not just one but many protagonists, all nuanced and believable, each fighting his/her own personal battle, all carrying their own pain and secrets, each loving or hating in a different way, with good and evil not always neatly separated. And, despite my first impression, I came to like the writing style -- insightful, observant, perceptive.

Lots of secrets, and the plot's many layers kept my interest alive.
A complex novel, skilfully executed.

A most unusual hero

Fans of historical fiction will love this series. Besides the factual and interesting historical context, the Seeker is a paradox. He works for the self serving Protector Cromwell but has a strong sense of justice. The plots keep you reading and wanting to start the next in the series.
