"Family relations, old secrets, and the battle against addiction are just a part of the tough emotional workout Novak puts her characters (and readers) through in her latest compelling novel."-Booklist"The Secret Sister is a sweet story that touches on the trials of life and illustrates how death, loss, abuse, despair, and unexpected trials can make us stronger...This is a great book that romance readers and fans of general fiction are bound to enjoy."-Portland Book Review"Skillful plotting, well- developed characters (a blind little girl is adorable), a delightful romance, toxic family dynamics, and a puzzling mystery make this story a rewarding read that will appeal to both romance and women's fiction fans." -Library Journal on The Secret Sister-Providence Journal on A Winter Wedding"In her latest, Novak neatly entwines contemporary romance and women's fiction by delivering the emotionally compelling romance readers expect while at the same time thoughtfully exploring the other relationships every woman has in her life. Add a gothic-tinged plot, and you have a book with wide reader appeal."- Booklist on The Secret Sister"The Secret Sister by Brenda Novak is indeed the best romantic thriller I have read... Brenda Novak has a raw talent for bringing her novels to life. Realistic, suspenseful, and an edge of your seat romance that will have readers coming back for more."-The San Francisco Book Review"This emotional novel showcases Novak's exceptional talent at creating genuine characters and real-life situations we sometimes try to dodge. The power of family is strong, and the element of mystery is stable throughout this romance. The police think Josephine killed herself because of money problems and bad investments. Keith just isn't convinced

Keith Lazarow has come back to Fairham Island to settle his mom estate . Josephine is dead in her bathtub by an apparent suicide. upon arriving Keith decided early on that his mom was murdered and she didn't kill herself. Keith and his mom have been estranged for five years. He left the island so he could get clean and start a new life. He has been in LA , California running a successful business . Keith was an addict was he was on the island. His sister Maisey was helping him at that time. He has been clean five years. Maisey and her husband live on the island and manage some rental cottages that the family owns. His sister Roxanne live in Louisiana with her husband and family . Keith is going to have3 to convince his sister and the chief of police that it was murder and not suicide. The police think Josephine killed herself because of money problems and bad investments. Keith just isn't convinced . There is also a woman named Nancy Dellinger . She runs the flower shop that Keith's family owns. Keith broke her five years ago when he left the island. He used her during that time because he was so addicted . Now he is a changed man but can he actually prove to Nancy that he is different? Can Keith prove it was murder? And if he can prove that it was in fact murder can he find the killer? What about his sisters , can he convince them to? Can he repair his friendship with Nancy and can she forgive him? This book in the second one in this series . It picks up five years after the first one. There are character in this one that first appeared in book one. Book one had a lot of secrets to reveal and this one does the same thing. Keith ahs changed his life but will it make a difference ? This is a refreshing concept to see him turn his life around since he was such a mess in the first one. I enjoyed the suspense and the revealing of the secrets and the killer . That part was very surprising to me. There are a lot of jaw dropping vents in this book. This family has a lot of secrets and is very dysfunctional at times. I kinda felt bad for Josephine in the first one but I got over it quickly enough in this one. I don't know how Roxanne was able to forgive everything thing that she had to. She is a bigger person that me. This book has a lot of forgiveness and redemption in it .Spoiler***** There is no way in heck that I would have taken my husband back after that bomb shell but that's just me . I give the story a 5 because of the suspense and not revealing the killer till the end . but I give the overall book a 4 because that of bad language and sex too much graphic sex scenes . I think Mrs. Novak is a wonderful writer and her stories are really good . I wish she there was less language and sex that's all.

I Didn't Bother Finishing This Book

It was partly my fault that I purchased this book. I thought I had picked up a thriller. "The Secrets She Kept," by Brenda Novak could be considered a romance novel. I would not be interested in reading this type of book. In fact, I stopped reading at page 191. There was not enough action to keep the story moving.

Novak's other books might be more interesting, but this one lacked substance. As a result, I would not recommend purchasing this book.

The Secrets She Kept

The death of Josephine Lazarow brings her estranged son Keith back to Fairham Island. Both his sisters, Maisie and Rocki, and he cannot believe that their mother committed suicide. Keith is determined to prove that by hiring an outside autopsy which confirms that she did not die by her own hamd, but that she was suffocated. Keith is a recovering addict who has been clean for five years and wants to stay that way. There are twists and turns in this novel and several suspects emerge including close family members. In the midst of all this, Keith renews his relationship with Nancy Dellinger, the woman he had leaned on and taken advantage of five years ago. This was an interesting story of destructive and healing love.

Disgusting

The characters were not likeable. I didn't want to finish the book. The affair between a mother and son-in-law. And then the daughter taking her husband back into her life. Disgusting.
