Based on a remarkable true story, The Secrets of Mary Bowser is an inspiring tale of one daring woman's willingness to sacrifice her own freedom to change the course of history All her life, Mary has been a slave to the wealthy Van Lew family of Richmond, Virginia. But when Bet, the willful Van Lew daughter, decides to send Mary to Philadelphia to be educated, she must leave her family to seize her freedom. Life in the North brings new friendships, a courtship, and a far different education than Mary ever expected, one that leads her into the heart of the abolition movement. With the nation edging toward war, she defies Virginia law by returning to Richmond to care for her ailing father—and to fight for emancipation. Posing as a slave in the Confederate White House in order to spy on President Jefferson Davis, Mary deceives even those who are closest to her to aid the Union command. Good beginning

Enjoyed reading this book up to about 2/3 of the way through. Then it became tedious. Not sure if the author was just trying to show off or to fill pages. The story was interesting but the depiction of Mary was too unbelievable. You'd think she altered the events and won the war single-handed. We were told in the beginning that there was very little factual history of Mary Bowser, but the author managed to make a nearly 500 page novel out of those few facts. The book was an interesting look at the Civil War era and elucidated the social injustices in both the South and the North.

Loved, Loved, Loved This Book!

I absolutely LOVED this book!! About a year ago I read Liar, Temptress, Soldier Spy, (I believe the author is Karen Abbott), which is nonfiction about women spies during the Civil War. It profiles 2 from the North & 2 from the South & is an outstanding book. I never knew there were women spies as well as women who fought in the war disguised as men. When I saw this book as a special offer on bookbub.com since I loved the other one so much I had to get it. It is so well written! I felt as if Mary Bowser was sitting across from me in my living room telling me her story. I could hardly put it down! Yes, some of it is fictionalized but the main characters & many events are true. When I got to where Mary goes to work for Jefferson Davis I knew I had read about her & Bet (Elizabeth Van Lew) in the other book. I had forgotten their names but remembered the situation, which made it all the more compelling. Now I am going to reread that one. Plus, it is so thought provoking & equally compelling to read about those times from the perspective of the slaves just like in Ginny Dye's Bregdan Chronicles. She tells those times from several different perspectives, which has altered how I think about them then as well as situations & attitudes now. That is also an outstanding, highly recommended series.

I have gotten way more interested in the Civil War the past year or so. It began 25 yrs ago with the Ken Burns series The Civil War on PBS but stopped there. I was so glad that was recently rereleased now that my interest has grown. Also I have found Confederate Civil War records of some of my ancestors, which really drew me in. I've read several excellent books on the Civil War & The Secrets of Mary Bowser will certainly always be among my favorites. I especially loved the last sentence! What a great way to end the book!

Interesting

First off, this is a LONG book - 673 pages. It isn't something you are going to sit and read in an evening. That being said, it is interesting and shone a light on a woman I knew nothing about. In a nutshell: Mary Bowser was born a slave, was eventually freed, and returned to the south to spy for the union during the civil war.

I largely enjoyed the novel, but I would caution readers that this is a novel. While based on real people, little is known about Mary Bowser so there is a lot of license taken to fill in the blanks. She definitely existed and appears to have helped during the war, but much of what appears to have been written about her by Bet Van Lew was destroyed.

I have two complaints about the novel. 1) Varina Davis, first lady of the Confederacy, is written as such a one-dimensional character and such an awful person that I had to do some additional research. What I was able to discover doesn't indicate that she was portrayed particularly accurately in the book. Maybe she is an amalgamation of many characters? and 2) The ending was poor. I won't give anymore information that that since I don't want to spoil it for readers, but it was a major let down to a novel that had been largely well-written up to that point.

Overall impression: Well worth a read and piqued my interest, but I would caution you to realize this is historical FICTION, based on fact.

Not well written. Author does not stick to the vernacular of the times. And the heroine is incredibly non-flawed.

Blah reading

This book reads like a text book from high school. To me the story was very unemotional and I couldn't connect with the characters in the book.

Okay read

Story started off well but then began to drag along. Characters were fairly well developed. The book included interesting facts concerning the period but did not keep interest in the second half.

If You Like History Detail You May Like It.

I enjoyed the first part of the book. It was rich with family interaction and kept my interest. Then the story became bogged down with details of the war and I started skimming pages. Some might like this, it did not hold my interest.

Read this!

I loved learning about spies for the Union. I was especially moved by Mary Bowser - her Intellect and passion were compelling. She and her allies changed America and the world.

I’m very appreciative of the author’s research and thankful for her gift to all of us.

I can’t think of more to say except that I’m irritated that I have to write twenty words in order to submit my thoughts. Am I at twenty yet?

Guess not so here I am still wandering when I’ll reach the magic number.
