And her hero is intriguingly close to that edge.” — Washington Post Yan Geling is one of the most acclaimed contemporary novelists and screenwriters writing in the Chinese language today. Disappointing read

I became aware of Geling Yan after seeing Zhang Yimou's film THE FLOWERS OF WAR. As such, I was looking forward to English translations of her Chinese writings. Well, so much for that. If you have trouble sleeping, THE SECRET TALKER is the answer.

Good Arc

I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher through netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This book is well written and the characters are described well. This was a interesting thriller featuring a stalker and a married college professor. While this book is well written, this book is a three star read. I would recommend reading this book to anyone and everyone. This book is in stores for CA$29.99 (CAD).

This is a terrible piece of writing

There is nothing plausible in this book - the characters’ behavior, their dialogue or emailing, the storyline - sound so false and off key that I wondered if it was a product of poor translating. If there was an intriguing idea for a plot it got fumbled away by these flaws and I’m not sure that there ever was one. Everything rings false and I cringed when I read many of the lines. I did finish the book because I was intrigued but unfortunately it never redeemed itself. Bad writing or poor translation or both? Ultimately it doesn’t matter.

Communication

Should we remain silent, or should we speak out? In her novel titled, The Secret Talker, Geling Yan explores the choices we have in communication. Chinese-born protagonist Hongmei and her American husband, Glen, live in California, and their relationship has become disjointed, falling to the level of leaving Post-It notes for each other instead of talking directly. After Hongmei receives an email from an unknown sender, she chooses to reply. The consequences of the reply provide much of the tension throughout this finely written novel.

A waste of time

I can’t believe I spent hours reading this book, which was recommended by the New York Times as an exciting summer reading choice.

The main character is being stalked in a way that is incredibly invasive and creepy. It defies credulity that she doesn’t go to the police. Instead, she willingly engages via email with the stalker and reveals her most closely guarded secrets to him/her. Hard as it is for the reader to accept that, [WARNING: small plot spoiler] it turns out that she isn’t really being stalked. It was all a misunderstanding of sorts. [I won’t say how or why, which is mildly interesting.] I finished book knowing the big secret and thinking, “I read a book just for that?”

Formulaic and easily solved

Ordered based on glowing review from nyts. Disagree, didn’t enjoy character development (weak), plot (obvious). Formulaic, mystery quickly and easily solved, also very expensive $22 hardcover on Amazon for such a little book. Sorry, but this is my ‘take’.

Dissatisfied

Thank you NetGalley and HarpiaVia for an advanced copy of this book.
The Secret Talker is one I almost DNF’d and probably should have. The mystery was pretty clear to me and I was disappointed in the character development. Hongmei just seems to be dissatisfied in life. She leaves her fist husband, Jungjai, for the American professor, Glen, and then takes up with the internet Secret Talker. I think everyone can figure out who The Secret Talker is with the first half of the book. No reason for her dissatisfaction in life seems to be identified except she went through some events during the Chinese Revolution. The book keeps going back to her life in the small Chinese town but never seems to define her and how that defined her or made her who she is.

A captivating and enjoyable read

This book has an intriguing plot: a young Chinese woman, Hongmei, living in America begins receiving emails from a stranger who seems to intimately know her every move. Against her better judgment, Hongmei begins a long and tortured correspondence with this person, revealing more about herself than she’s honestly ever revealed to anyone. She has had a troubled life: sexual abuse as a child, arrest, and torture when suspected of being a spy, and finally moving to the United States with the help of her school professor and now husband, Glen.
I thoroughly enjoyed the tenseness of the exchanges in the emails, the rabbit hole that Hongmei can’t seem to avoid, and the history of her youth in a strict regime. The last few pages seemed a bit scattered, but I’m hoping after I’ve given it more consideration, the intent of the author will become more clear to me. Overall, this was a captivating and enjoyable read.
