Description

"Vastly influential. Stunning. Dominated the genre of Science-Fiction epics." * The Independent * "Lawrence [is] celebrated for his richly coloured, highly detailed visions of fantastic worlds." * The New York Times * "I love Trigan Empire! It's absolutely epic." -- Duncan Jones (director Source Code, Moon) "Don [Lawrence] painted a comic I loved. It was called the Trigan Empire - two comic pages a week, in the children's magazine "Look and Learn", which even schools who banned comics allowed" -- Neil Gaiman Don Lawrence was born in 1928, and worked for Mick Anglo on the Marvelman comic produced for Amalgamated Press, and then Billy the Kid in the comic Sun. When Sun was absorbed into Lion he moved on to illustrating Olac the Gladiator, Karl the Viking and Maroc the Mighty. In 1965 he teamed with Mike Butterworth to create The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire for Ranger magazine, and continued to paint the comic through its transition into Look and Learn through to 1976. During this period he also worked on Fireball XL5 and The Adventures of Tarzan comic strips for TV Century 21. After leaving The Trigan Empire he worked with a Dutch publisher to create Storm, a post-apocalypse sci-fi series, which he would draw through to his retirement in 1999.

Even Better Than Everyone Says

The wait is over. Wonderful, epic, and unforgettable. "Masterpiece" doesn't begin to cover it. In it's own way, it's one of the most important comics every made - a total world-building exercise, unequaled in terms of art and story.

A Classic Brought Back

A classic from my youth brought back in modern print. A mix of Roman, Greek and SciFi absurdity and innocence. The best quote ever is from Brag, brother of Trigo, when making a desperate attempt to save the city Trigan: 'It can not be done .... but, by the stars, let us do it!'. Highly recommend.

Excellent artwork!

I bought this graphic novel only to enjoy Don Lawrence's artworks. They are not drawings but paintings.
The stories are too black and white, shallow, and racist.
5 stars for Don Lawrence.
1 star for Mike Butterworth.

Fantastic stuff!

I am a longtime fan of comics, but I had never even heard of this. (Apologies for being a clueless yank.) The stories are rather old-fashioned, but very well-wrought. The real treasure here is the artwork.

Best graphic artist of all time

Don Lawrence is the best. Every frame is a full painting, and his figure motion is perfect. This puts most modern comic art to shame. The story is fun as well. Sifi Roman empire where men are real men and women are occasionally seen. If you haven't seen this, then I strongly recommend you check out all of Don's work.
