Description

"Her child characters were remarkable in her day because they are so entirely human. They are intelligent, vain, aggressive, humorous, witty, cruel, compassionate... in fact, they are like adults." --Gore Vidal EDITH NESBIT was a mischievous child who grew up into an unconventional adult. With her husband, Hubert Bland, she was one of the founder members of the socialist Fabian Society; their household became a centre of the socialist and literary circles of the times. E. Nesbit turned late to children's writing. Her first children's book, THE TREASURE SEEKERS, was published in 1899 to great acclaim. Other books featuring the Bastable children followed, and a series of magical fantasy books, including FIVE CHILDREN AND IT also became very popular. THE RAILWAY CHILDREN was first published monthly in the LONDON MAGAZINE in 1905, and published as a book in 1906 and has been in print ever since.

Not illustrated

I expected illustrations, and so was a little disappointed.

Funny, heart-warming, heart-wrenching, they don't write these kind of books any more

A touching book about children struggling with a sudden move into the countryside, whose father has mysteriously disappeared and whose mother constantly tries to make ends meet. Funny, heart-warming, heart-wrenching, they don't write these kind of books any more. Edith Nesbit was one of the world's best children's writers, and her books serve equally well for adults who have not lost their sense of wonder or play. These children do their noble best to cope with their changed circumstances, and fall in love with the railway trains that pass near their house, making a friend of a mysterious and kindly Old Gentleman. There is no escaping the delightful power of this book, nor the enchanting children who inhabit and bring it to life, full, glorious, vigorous life.

Note the size of the book!

This book is probably for use in a classroom. It is printed on basically 8 1/2 by 11 paper, with large print and wide margins. It would be great for class reading and note-taking, but is a little bulky for just a casual read.

Quaint and lovely!

For such an old book - published in the early 1900s - it was enjoyable to read a story set in the past but also written at that time.
The children are portrayed with the adventurous spirit and helpful attitudes in their very changed circumstances. At the same time they are realistic enough to have spats and get in a spot of trouble. The narrator had an interesting and different perspective. I was so glad to be able to get the book.
