Fans of Anthony Ryan's Blood Song will love this."― Django Wexler, author of The Thousand Names "Canada's answer to George R. R. Martin... A vividly drawn, instantly gripping saga."― Globe and Mail Born in England to South American parents, Evan Winter was raised in Africa near the historical territory of his Xhosa ancestors. A huge macho disappointment

Just finished. Sadly, I was incredibly disappointed. The main character is reprehensible. By that I mean that he is a myopic rage-machine who consistently abuses his friends, ignores the advice of those who care about him and puts his own grief above not only the feelings of others but also above their well being and even their lives. Yes he is brave and determined, but that isn’t enough to create a character I can actually admire or feel comfortable relating to. This book is full of nauseating toxic masculinity, however good the plot is and however well crafted. I will not be recommending it to anyone or buying anything else by this author. I’m saddened. The author has talent and I wanted to like it.

This is special!

The vivid descriptions painted a fantastic world I could see myself in, then overlaid a fantasy mechanic that is new and refreshing with a story that grips you and doesn’t let up. There were levels to the suffering of the tragic hero that pushed me beyond my own comfort…and his ability to persevere will stay with you after the last page. (No spoilers, and it’s awesome)

Don't waste your time!!

Gave it a shot as I love good fantasy. Terrible book--poor writing and very predictable story. After reading the book I went back to the reviews and had to confirm they were referring to the same book I read. I can only see this as more regressive politics (liberals are not progressive) and the reviews being based on the race of the author. Have to promote everything black even if it is crap. Very disappointed as it was a big waste of my time (money as well).

Endless battle scenes and not much else

If you like action movies where there’s no real plot, just lots of fighting and explosions, you might like this book. Heavy on the rage, very light on the dragons. None of the characters were compelling, and don’t get too interested in anyone because they’ll probably die. Dialogue is stilted and character development is almost nonexistent. After awhile I found myself getting numb to all the death and destruction and just wondered what the point if it all was. If the backstory is ever explained and the “savages” are ever described as more, I had to stop reading before I got to that part- and I’ve maybe given up on five books total in my life, so that’s saying something. I can think of at least a dozen far better books to read than this just off the top of my head.

Excellent book but watch for misprint!

Book was excellent but I had to purchase a Kindle edition to finish it. My copy was severely misprinted. As the climax was coming to its finish, at pg 501 the book reprinted a portion and went back to pg 471. The book then continued through pg 501 a 2nd time and cut to the extras and q&a with the author. The book doesn't actually wrap up until the epilogue finishes at pg 522.

Dig not hold my interest.

At the heart, it was a confusing work.

Poor editing and research

There is a great book hidden in here somewhere. It suffers from poor editing and that no research was done on how actual combat works. I was hoping more African culture and or mythology would have been used.

One of my favorite books of all time

Such an awesome book. You just get so absorbed into the story, I couldn’t put it down until it was finished. I used to read all the time when I was younger and as an adult I’ve found it difficult to get back into reading. This book cured me. If you love the fantasy genre then you will love this book, guaranteed. I read both books in the series within 3 days and I’m impatiently waiting for the next installment. Evan, if you see this, HURRY UP (respectfully).

Compelling

So I checked this book out because I liked the idea of a fantasy setting that’s isn’t Eurocentric like most other fantasy stories. It uses a lot of African influences, mostly of the Xhosa people.
Additionally it has a cool story filled with lots a solid characters, development for said characters and a decent bit of world building.
I really only have some minor nitpicks and they are quite minor. But that being some locations of places I found to be bland like there are a series of mountain ranges just called Northern Mountains or Southern Mountains. I just thought that was odd when the author has creative and unique sounding names for all the characters, the magic system and other things. So again, it’s a very minor nitpick and doesn’t affect the story at all. I would recommend this to anyone who loves fantasy. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.

A Wild Ride!

I left this book in my amazon cart for months, reading and re-reading reviews. I finally purchased the book, and when I started reading it I could not put it down. I was up till 2:30 this morning reading until my wife insisted I come to bed. I finished it up this morning as soon as I could.

It was a little different than I expected. I do wish that writers would leave out the descriptive intimacy. It was only a page, but would rather avoid it altogether. Excellent character and story development, however, it was disappointing to see some of the characters die. The book concluded with an unexpected turn, I was completely surprised. There are some valuable lessons in Rage of Dragons because the story represents the potential consequences of a society divided by social discrimination and caste systems. Go read!
