Description

"If you want to be inspired by a great leader, if you want to feel what it takes to do what no one thought possible, if you want to be absorbed by a heroic journey--Tommy Caldwell's story is one of the best you could ever hope to find.xa0 Here, in his own words, you get more than just a climbing adventure, you get the inside view of how a person can endure crushing setbacks and persist to fulfill a spectacular vision.xa0 And in sharing his story, he has become a teacher to us all." — Jim Collins, author of Good to Great “ The Push is the most insightful book about climbing I’ve ever read, and quite possibly the most enjoyable. Whether Caldwell is explaining his astounding feats on vertical terrain, or the agony of trying to sustain a doomed relationship, or the merits of what he calls ‘elective suffering,' the writing is consistently captivating and unfailingly honest.” — Jon Krakauer, author of Into Thin Air "Yes, Tommy Caldwell is a badass, but he is no different than you or I. I've always been interested in how people do the impossible. This isn't just a book about climbing, it's about laser sharp focus in all aspects of life. Tommy's story provides insight how we can all push a little further and a little higher." —Scott Jurek, author of Eat & Run “The rarest of adventure reads:xa0 it thrills with colorful details of courage and perseverance but it enriches readers with an absolutely captivating glimpse into how a simple yet unwavering resolve can turn adversity into reward.” — The Denver Post “You always know Caldwell’s going to make it to the top of that 3,000-foot hunk of Yosemite granite.xa0 But it doesn’t matter – the book’s raw honesty helps it transcend the sports-autobiography genre.” — Outside “Stands out as a genuine achievement . . . the authenticity of Caldwell’s voice comes through clearly in passages of well-crafted prose . . . The Push is not simply a book about rock climbing, but about human relationships and the ways in which we can hurt each other while trying to be kind.xa0 Caldwell, for all his magnificent achievements on stone, reminds us that in the end, the only really serious enterprise is living.” – The Guardian (U.K.) “Full of rich stories that fluctuate between gripping, tender, moving, laugh-out loud funny, devastating and inspiring . . . Caldwell’s writing also crystallizes moments of intense natural beauty . . . The Push is an adventure is its own right, exploring the unknown self, being open to growth, sharing friendship with others – and encouraging readers to do the same.” – The Kansas City Star “Caldwell expertly blends the triumphs and tragedies of a life well lived with discussions of mastering the vertical climb . . . an eloquent, absorbing story about testing one’s limits.” — Publishers Weekly “Climbers will inhale Caldwell’s book and want more; adventure readers will love his descriptions of climbs and techniques, even if they are new to the sport.” — Library Journal Tommy Caldwell grew up in Colorado. He has made dozens of notable ascents, and many consider him the best all-around rock climber in the world. In 2014 he was chosen as one of National Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year, and in 2015 the American Alpine Club awarded him Lifetime Honorary Membership, its highest honor. Caldwell, a frequent contributor to Alpinist , Climbing , and Rock and Ice magazines, lives in the town where he first learned to climb, Estes Park, Colorado, with his wife and their son and daughter.

Caldwell’s affinity for adventure then led him to the vertigo-inducing and little understood world of big wall free climbing. But his evolution as a climber was not without challenges; in his early twenties, he was held hostage by militants in a harrowing ordeal in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan. Soon after, he lost his left index finger in an accident. Later his wife, and main climbing partner, left him. Caldwell emerged from these hardships with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. Outstanding Climbing Memoir

I really enjoyed reading this autobiography (thus far) of the world class rock climber Tommy Caldwell. The book is better written than most in this category, and is hard to put down. Caldwell gives fascinating accounts of his many dramatic life experiences, including being held hostage by terrorist rebels during a foreign trip, as well as his epic climbing adventures. The core of the book concerns his preparation for and detailed description of the free climb of the Dawn Wall route on Yosemite's El Cap, widely considered the most difficult free climb ever done. However, Caldwell offers the reader much more, and provides candid accounts of the highs and lows of a professional athlete's life, including the failure of his first marriage, self-doubts, and depression. The entire "journey" to the top of the Dawn Wall can be read as a path to redemption and fulfillment. Even though I am not a climber, I found Caldwell's story inspiring and memorable.

Very engaging story

Wow...The Push is a job well done...it is a story about climbing and life and oftentimes very intense experiences. The Push is written in such a way that anyone can embrace it whether you climb or not. I found the author to be very open and honest and details out an exhilarating account of human will, frailty, closed mindedness and open mindedness, focus, dreampower, work ethic and of individual and group growth.
The Push is one of the most incredible books I've ever read...I almost hated it to end.
This is an adventure and a journey not to be missed.

Adds a lot to the Dawn Wall film

Great book and a nice companion to the Dawn Wall movie as it adds a ton more detail. Very motivational in an indirect manner. It's an easy read too, lots of pleasure per page. I'm a past rock climber so this area is of general interest to me.

Amazing book

As a climber, Tommy Caldwell is an idol of mine. After watching Dawn Wall for the first time, I knew I had to get my hands on this book and read more about him. His stories are inspiring and I feel like I truly had a connection and understanding with him as I read about his “search for the path”. I have not finished the book yet, but when I am reading I have to force myself to put it down. Such a great read for climbers and non climbers alike!

Beautifully written

I loved this book more than I thought I was going to. So many life lessons can be learned through Tommy's climbing journey. I know he had a lot of help writing the book, but nevertheless, each sentence felt well thought out and was beautifully written.

Applauding this book

I have never written an online review for a product before... but this book is worth it! As I was on a biking and surfing trip in Baja California my boyfriend loaned me this book to read and I had no expectations. I had only heard of Tommy from the climbing community. But WOW! Tommy's story is inspiring, showcasing perseverance, motivation and the wonderful spirit he has. Tommy's parents are role model's for how I wish I was raised! The support system he has throughout his life is tight knit and unconditional. It has been a long time since a book really hooked me and made me not want to put the book down- really though I kept putting off other things because I loved how he wrote. Tommy's writing style is relatable and raw, I feel he is a very honest person that bares all of the truth. I greatly appreciate his work and his passion that he shares with the world in this book and in person. I highly recommend this book to any person, even if you are not a climber, this book will captivate you an leave you highly motivated to get out the door and chase your dreams, because it is possible if you work hard for it! This is my favorite book I have read this year and I just saw the movie after reading it, which would normally be a huge let down. But The Dawn Wall was also incredible and I felt like it summarized the book beautifully, I definitely cried at the end of the film seeing Kevin and Tommy fulfill their dream-together! Thank you Tommy for sharing your life with the world, I am sure it will inspire so many to do greatness in this world of ours!
