Green eyes that danced to the beat of every melody that radiated from every tavern on every street corner in the always-tawdry Quarter. Even during a crowded lunch hour in the most congested part of New Orleans, you could spot him a block away, his head bobbing above the masses. On the eve of Fat Tuesday the Quarter was flush with tourists, and each of them was flush with anticipation of the debauched revelry that would only accelerate as the Monday before stretched into the Tuesday of, as almost-here became Mardi Gras.The other man, the one with the gun, knew that in a crowd like this one he would have made a rotten target. He was five-eight with his sneakers on. What hair remained on his head was on the dark side of brown. His creeping baldness didn't matter much to him, though, because the Saints cap he was wearing shielded his scalp from the sun as effectively as the distinctive steel-rimmed Ray-Bans shaded his eyes. The khakis and navy-striped sweater he was wearing had been chosen because they comprised the de facto uniform-of-the-day among the male revelers wandering to join the crowds on Bourbon Street.The late morning had turned mild, and the man's windbreaker was draped over his right hand and arm, totally disguising the barrel of his Ruger Mark II as well as the additional length of the stubby suppressor. His left hand was shoved deep in the pocket of his khakis. He had been briefed on the tall man's destination in advance and kept his distance as he followed him. At the intersection where Bienville crossed Royal the man with the silenced .22 would begin to close the gap on the man without one. That would give the assassin a little over a block to get close enough to do his job.The tall, blond man had come from his office near City Hall. His wife had wanted to meet him downtown and accompany him to the restaurant. But he'd declined her offer. Dr. Alan Gregory is a durable hero. He's been shot, stabbed, pushed off of cliffs, almost pushed off of cliffs, stalked, variously assaulted, and attacked by at least one wild animal. And yet he remains a mensch - tiresomely physically fit and over-addicted to healthy living, perhaps, but still a mensch. He admires his wife, cherishes his friends, and generally respects his patients. He loves his dogs, present and past. The supporting cast is equally attractive/compelling: Lauren Crowder's independent intelligence and relentless bravery, Sam Purdy's common sense and generosity, Adrienne Arvin's dementedly charming chutzpah, Diane and Raoul's wit and whimsy, all serve to anchor the series. And the presence of Grace in the later novels promises to develop into a great child character, possibly rivaling Lucy Karp in the early Gruber-authored Tanenbaums. The incidental characters are vivid and generally believable, almost without exception. Some authors are better at male characters than female, or the reverse, but White is excellent at people, all people. Most of the books are first-person narration by Gregory, but White can shift to third-person with aplomb.

Aside from the great characters, the plots of this series are outstanding. We learn about a private end-of-life corporation, cold-case volunteer groups, the Mormons, DB Cooper, the cult of personality, Grand Canyon adventures, and the fallout from the JonBenet case, all without stretching the seams of the community based in Boulder, CO. When the plots call for suspense, the books are literally terrifying, real white-knuckle reads. White is witty and insightful and the very best craftsperson of the English language I've read in years. His casually correct use of the subjective fills me with delight, as do his always-agreeing pronouns, and his elegant but unpretentious syntax. His prose is a pleasure to read.

The settings are wondrously vivid - views, trees, coffee houses, the streets and walks of Boulder and environs. White brings food to the table and vistas to the eye. You can track his characters on GoogleEarth and see just what he describes. I fell into this series at a gruesome time for me, professionally, and reading them all in a period of a couple of weeks has been an exercise in staying sane. Some are, of course, better than others - Kill Me, The Program, Higher Authority, Manner of Death - and there are some weak links (Cold Case, Private Practices), but I can't imagine reading 15 books by any other contemporary author sans break and still wishing for more.

The Program gives us a new main character, Kristen Lord, who comes to Boulder and Alan Gregory's practice as a protected witness. Kristen is a interesting character, brave and cautious at the same time; worried about her daughter and her own life, her fear/panic is palpable, but we never see her as a victim - quite an accomplishment for White. There are some nifty minor characters and a great new dog in the mix, as well as a chance for Lauren and Alan to work together.

A Departure From What We Expect...

This is the 9th book in Stephen White's series with psychologist Alan Gregory and a cast of characters that we have come to know over the previous eight books. The difference with this book is that it has little to do with Alan Gregory or any of the other characters. It was a risk in my opinion for the author to make his main star a minor character in someone else's story. And, the risk paid off.

I'll admit, I started reading this book because I was reading the series and thought it would be a good read since I already knew the characters. When I realized that the book was totally about someone else and their entrance into the Witness Protection Program and eventually their run from it, I decided I would not like the book. I kept reading anyway and soon I was caught up in the story just like all Stephen White's other books.

A different read, but a surprisingly good one.

speedy, lumpy, and does its job

Kirsten Lord's husband was gunned down in front of her outside of a New Orleans eatery, the murder fullfilling a promise made by a druglord whom she helped convict. Or, well, it's part of the fullfilled promise. It's one of those open-ended promises: for every precious thing I lose, you will lose two.

The resulting tale follows Kirsten through the world of the Witness Security Program, around obstacles such as shady US Marshalls, aging mobsters, and people and events in the past that refuse to die...or might die when they shouldn't. It's a story that is complex and compelling enough to be a nicely workable thriller. Literary enough and slick enough so that your bookmark, should you use one, won't stay in one place for too long.

For readers familiar with Mr. White's stories, however, the appearance of his most familiar character, Dr. Alan Gregory, will prove to be little more than an annoying footnote. In any event, White, it seems, has included his recurring character in this case for little other reason than to showcase his natural and lifelong experience with the psychologist's profession. It is mostly to the novel's detriment.

Likewise, although generally the text moves easily and unfettered by pretension or low-brow asthetics, it does clunk in some spots. White's normally consistent prose jars with a few oddly placed metaphors and ill-chosen words (boobs and poop?). And in an attempt to make foray into his central character's heart and soul, he constructed an extended and ultimately annoying whale metaphor that is more awkward and unnecessary than it is illuminating or endearing.

Still, highlights remain, such as the character of Carl Luppo, a retired hit man and one of Kirsten's only true friends, and the few action scenes that don't prove to be false leads or fake scares. And although the plot isn't spread evenly (it lumps in places) the storytelling is competent enough to keep the page numbers advancing.

My first experience with Stephen White and Alan Gregory

The Program starts with one hit man and ends with another. Along the way it's an exploration of the Witness Protection (Security) Program and two participants who come from different directions. Kirsten (nee Peyton) is a prosecutor forced to seek help from the agency she has ridiculed to hide her daughter and herself. Carl Lupo is a hit man informer. Both lives take interesting and different directions when they both end up in Boulder Colorado. I enjoyed the way Carl "picked up" Kirsten. This is the first I've read of Alan Gregory, White's psychologist protagonist. He has a relatively small and tangential part in the story that unfolds. He and his pregnant wife play a bigger role at the end. If anything, their involvement in the story is it's weakest point. I found the story to be very well written. This felt like a Thomas Perry book, well written, nice characterizations, interesting story line, tension building . . . Recommended to me by my friend George, and I'm recommending it to you.

Good stuff. A 'should' read.

I thought I was embarking upon a Burger King of a novel and instead I found myself at a Five Star restaurant. Well, Four Stars. The characters are both interesting and magnetic. Moral conflicts arise that remain unresolved, always a believable result. Kirsten Lord doesn't have all the answers, but she has enough of them to recognize that if she doesn't address something in her past where she "went along to get along," whether she survives the Witness Security Program or not won't make a difference because she would have become 'a witness' [was this intentional? Brilliant if it was] to her own moral decay.
Carl Luppo is one of the best supporting characters I have ever read. Like Kirsten, I'm not sure I like him but I would certainly like him on my side. Carl would always have my back.
The daughter is a loving, intelligent, pain in the you know what, just like real 9-year olds.
Wonderful moral confusion, observable growth and fascinating characters. Good dialogue. Very good book.

3 1/2 Stars - Slow Start then Good Page Turner

The book started out slowly and couldn't get a handle on itself. The protagonist, a reluctant member of the Witness Protection Program of which she was critical while a New Orleans assistant district attorney, seems like the typical TV female lead, in need of a man to help her (one does get tired of the helpless female character). Newly widowed (probably by a revenge promising convicted felon), she and her 9 year old daughter move to Boulder, CO. Kirsten Lord, sees whales (a plot device I could have easily done without) that bring good and bad memories in various forms so for that and her overall state of mind, seeks therapy, thus linking with Allan Gregory who is in a minor role from previous books in this heretofore excellent series.
Kirsten's character seems uncharacteristically incapable of making good decisions, instead endlessly repeating in her mind the threat made to her in the courtroom by the man who probably killed her husband. For somone experienced in making life and death decisions as a district attorney, it was frustrating to see her unable to be more decisive as well as exposing her and her daughter to unnecessary danger such as calling an old friend and giving away the state in which she lived. Fortunately the man her shallow character needs is another member of the program, a former mob hitman, who is able to be of major assistance as several forces are looking for her to do her harm. The rationale behind the new hitman (not the one in the Program) was somewhat contrived but it added the suspense this novel would have did without.
The reformed hitman, Carl, is fun. I'm sure a lot of readers chuckled when Kirsten's daughter's asks why Carl's neutered miniature poodle doesn't have what she expected a boy dog to have. After a pause, Carl proudly responds "He may not have nuts, but he has balls." I learned more than I wanted when Carl taught me flatulence is a byproduct of torture.
The second half of the book moves better towards an exciting and fairly believable climax. The suspense picks up nicely as Kirsten starts being more responsible.
I preferred the other books in the series. This one had little more than suspense going for it.
I recommend all others in the Allan Gregory series and tepidly recommend this one. I'd suggest starting with the others.

This series was recommended by a friend who suggested I read in the order White wrote them. I have tried to do so and can see the evolution of the author's work. Always insightful and circumspect, the protagonist is a clinical psychologist who stumbles into criminal activity, mostly via his work with his patients, circumstances involving his past or his personal relationships. The stories result in the dramatic consequences and solutions of these crimes.
The Program introduces a slightly different format insofar as new characters carry a great deal of the book, and their stories as presented in the first person. Alan Gregory, the psychologist, is peripheral until the end of the book.
I enjoyed this break from format, although I note that the next book goes back to form, insofar as the new characters were believable and very interesting. Highly recommend.
