Description

From Publishers Weekly Readers unfamiliar with the previous eight books in the Kydd series ( The Admiral's Daughter , etc.) may find themselves lost at sea with the plot and setting of Stockwin's underwhelming latest addition. After the death of Cmdr. Thomas Kydd's one true love, Rosalynd, in Daughter , Kydd's depression only worsens when his ship, the HMS Teazer , is assigned to the Channel Islands, a backwater in the sea war between England and Napoleonic France. His crew's loyalty flagging, Kydd is framed for smuggling, then cashiered from royal service. After a brief stint working as a stagehand for a roving theater troupe, he is recruited to captain a privateer, duty he previously considered beneath him, while his steadfast friend and clerk, Nicholas Renzi, falls into the service of the prince of Bouillon, who is part of a plot to kidnap Napoleon and restore the Bourbon throne. Full of indecipherable sailing jargon and one-dimensional characters, Stockwin's plodding installment sinks. (Oct.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. He writes evocatively of shipboard routine, the panic and confusion of combat, and the terrifying approach of a storm at sea, and he knows how to stage enthralling action scenes."xa0 — Publishers Weekly onxa0the Kydd Sea Adventures series"Likable Tom and his shipmates make a snug fit in that page-turning Forester and O'Brian tradition—thanks to retired Royal Navy author Stockwin."xa0 — Kirkus Reviews onxa0the Kydd Sea Adventures series"Fans of fast-paced adventure will get their fill with this book."xa0 — The Historical Novels Review on the Kydd Sea Adventures series During the location research for this book, set in the Channel Islands, between France and England, I developed a fresh admiration for Admiral Sir James Saumarez, a much-undervalued naval hero, whose integrity and sensitivity ensured he would stand in the shadow of other, more colourful characters. The inhabitants of the Norman Isles are fiercely independent and rightly revere their 1000-year history. There have been few of my research locations that have proved so little changed and so atmospheric. I do hope you enjoy this story; in the next book Kydd will be sailing into shoal waters of quite another kind... Julian Stockwin is a retired lieutenant commander ofxa0the Royal Navy Reserve. He entered the British Navy at age 15 and was eventually named a Member of the British Empire. Read more

Abrupt Installment

This is a well written series that I intend to read in it’s entirety. “The Privateer’s Revenge” seemed hurried as though it should have been a longer read. The ending was abrupt and lacked detail as it seemed shorted on enough pages to complete the yarn.

Part Two of a trilogy?

Kydd in "The Privateer's Revenge" seems poised midway now between the blindly ambitious but naive officer and social climber, meant kindly, of "The Admiral's Daughter" and what he is to become. Stockwin's forthcoming installment, "Treachery", should see us through to a Kydd with a juster grip on ambition, society, and himself, still the dashing sailor, but no longer as naive or ill-educated as he has been about the society of the day, or himself. Renzi, his friend, makes an observation in "The Privateer's Revenge" that a process like this seems to be going on in Kydd, and between tragedy, betrayal and hitting bottom for a time before recouping his self-esteem and fortune at the end of "The Privateer's Revenge", with an appreciation for those who stood by him as opposed to those figures of society who did not, it seems that this is indeed Stockwin's intention. Forester pulled off a similar feat in the Hornblower books with the three books starting with "Beat to Quarters", and entertaining as is "The Privateer's Revenge" with Kydd's discovering the worlds of theatre and privateering, and Renzi's idealism being tested by the deceit and savagery of spying, it is all a middle step in the process I hope we'll see brought to maturity in "Treachery," for Renzi as well as Kydd. Stockwin has set himself a tall order, moving Kydd from the bottom to the top of both the British Navy and society, and Renzi from privilege to genuine personal attainment, and it was inevitable they both have to go through the ringer to grow up. We'll wait and see!

another great yarn

This is yet another great story from one of the best historical fiction writers in the market today.
It takes an unexpected turn as Kydd is forced from the navy to feed himself. As in all his adventures however he is finally back in control with his fortunes enhanced.
I can not wait for the next chapter.

The Privateer's Revenge

One of the best yet. Yes, Tom is moaping about from the heartbreaking loss he suffered, but he eventually grows a pair and gets over it. To tease you, Thomas Kydd gets mugged and is again pressed to sea in the first few pages. Julian, keep it up. I am ready for a movie from this series, and I want a major roll please.
