Description

"A hymn to la vie Parisienne." — The Guardian " A fable of romance and redemption. " — The Telegraph " Captures the same romantic, whimsical, nostalgic feeling that the film Amélie did so well—partly because it is set in the 1980s, so before computers, mobile phones and social networking, partly as the plot is also driven by accident and chance. One of the pleasures of the book is that it is a personal, special discovery. You feel that you have stumbled across a book that nobody else knows about. Your relationship with the book is the same as that of the various characters to the hat itself—you are blessed to have come across it ." — The Guardian "As entertaining as it is original, this is the story to enjoy like a chocolate with a surprise centre." — Marie France "Teeters pleasantly on the edge of Gallic whimsy." — The Guardian "Impossible to resist." — L'Express "Flawless . . . a funny, clever, feel-good social satire with the page-turning quality of a great detective novel." — Rosie Goldsmith "An enchanting, irresistible story which flows quickly and effortlessly from one vivid character to the next, capturing their essence in a minimum of words and with a vitality that never ceases to surprise and delight." — Lancashire Evening Post "Antoine Laurain’s delightful The President’s Hat remains my favourite book of 2013 . . . an absolute gem, guaranteed to make you smile." — Susan Osborne "Full of charm and humour, this short book looks at how a small change in attitude can have significant differences to lives. It’s a delightful little read." — The Bookbag "Its gentle satirical humor reminded me of Jacques Tati’s classic films, and, no, you don’t have to know French politics to enjoy this novel." — Library Journal "The most feel-good book I’ve read in years." — Francofille "Part eccentric romance, part detective story . . . this book makes perfect holiday reading." — The Lady "A quirky, enchanting love story that will surely soften the hardest of cynics." — We Love This Book "An inspired and delicious fable." — Version Femina "A clever game of cat-and-mouse, bringing back a whole host of memories of the period it perfectly re-enacts." — 20 Minutes "This is a simple tale that is entertaining, but it is also a tale that speaks more profoundly of the human attachment to objects as desired sources of power." — Bookslut "I loved this book for its quirky story, its embracing humanism, its clever reenactment of the 1980s with all those '80s icons of art and politics, and its wonderful characters." — Readallday.com "A whimsical flavor of Paris. The characters are warm, believable and authentic, the setting and situations are well drawn which all contribute to making this a captivating, quick read." — Monsters & Critics "Like Cinderella's glass slipper or Aladdin's lamp, the hat is a talisman that makes its wearers' dreams come true." — RTL "Effortlessly combines a skillfully woven story and the emblems of the eighties." — L'Express "Clever, revealing, funny and caustic, this novel charmingly paints a cast of characters and brings the eighties vividly back to life." — Télé Loisirs "We're in safe hands with Antoine Laurain, the man behind this sweet, lively, nostalgic tale." — Livres Hebdo "Subtle, inventive, and often funny." — L'Avenir Antoine Laurain was born in Paris in the early 1970s. He is a writer, collector and director of several short films.

Delightful! A terrific book club book

Our book club read this book and it is my favorite book this year. Charming, funny, engaging and though provoking. I can think of lots of good discussing question in addition to those at the back of the book. I'm recommending this to everyone I know. It reminds me a bit of an O'Henry story. I won't say more just read it to the very end.

If you are reading my review, you should totally read the book too.

I read another book by this author a few weeks ago, The Red Notebook, and had to read another story told by such a fun writer. How I enjoyed this read. So sweet and beautiful. I could see this becoming an Amelie style film, it has all the sweetness and magic that life really does contain if one pays close attention.
After reading this book, I now want to take the paperback and put a note on it *read me* and leave it in the hallway outside the college art classes. It is a couple weeks before spring break... it would be perfect timing. A short and sweet story to make one smile during the couple weeks off.
I am totally doing that now.

"Chapeau!"*

A more enchanting Gallic fable is hard to imagine. Meet the delightful Parisians who, through happenstance, come into sequential temporary possession of President Francois Mitterand's black felt hat. Is it a magical chapeau or is it a subtlety of human nature to feel more confident in the presence of objects belonging to confident celebrities?

Laurain's book is gentle, humorous, and piquant in the style of Alan Bennett's small gem about reading royalty, The Uncommon Reader. If you liked the tone and style of that very English novella, you will probably appreciate the elegant stylishness of this French one, too.

(*Fortuitously, "chapeau" is idiomatic French for 'I TIP MY HAT TO YOU,' a way of saying "congratulations.")

small book with big impact!

This is a delightful book!
The story starts with the President of France leaving his hat in a restaurant. The mystery unfolds as
one after another the hat takes on new and temporary owners, and how their lives seem to experience
important changes as a result of their wearing the hat. A fun book, it would make a great gift.

Charming.

Antoine Laurain seems to have found his niche in writing quirky amusing and clever little stories that will appeal to a wide reading public.
Like The Red Notebook which I read a couple of weeks ago, The president's Hat offers a charming read that is such a pleasant relief after all the "dark" literature that is on the market nowadays.
Uplifting and elegant, I absolutely recommend The president's hat for those of you looking for escapism in the best possible way.
The theme has been described in previous reviews so I won't attempt further explanations of the plot; enough to say, get this book and smile your way into the lives of the people who were transformed in one way or another by possessing Francois Mitterrand's hat.

Magical

It's 1986 and Daniel Merçier wants to treat himself, so he goes to a Parisian brasserie for a seafood dinner. He can't believe his luck when president François Mitterand has his evening meal at the table next to him. Daniel dreams of being part of his meeting, but he's already quite happy listening in. Then the president leaves and forgets his hat. Daniel finds it and instead of returning it to him he decides to keep it. Only there's something very special about the hat. It actually changes his entire life.

The hat influences Daniel's future. All of a sudden his career improves and he feels like a different person. Only he doesn't manage to keep the hat, he loses it. He's devastated as he was so happy with his hat. Now it's in the hands of someone else. Fanny picks it up when she's on the train. And the hat changes her life as well. It has only just begun its journey...

The President's Hat is a fabulous story about a hat that changes people's lives. It makes them bolder and it enhances the qualities they already have. I love the idea and really enjoyed reading this book. Antoine Laurain has a great sense of humor and his stories are sparkling. Several people possess the hat and it keeps making things better for them. I really liked to read about their characters and wishes. They all have different stories, but they share the hat. I think this book is a perfect fairy tale for adults and it put a big smile on my face. It is really wonderful and magical, I highly recommend it.
