Description

Review “I am a compulsive reader of literary novels―but this has been a terrible year for fiction that is actually readable, and not experimental. I have been so disappointed when well-known writers came out with books that, to me, were just duds. But there was one book that kept me reading, the sort of novel I can’t put down… The Perfect Child by Lucinda Berry. It speaks to the fear of every parent: What if your child is a psychopath? This novel takes it a step farther. A couple, desperate for a child, have the chance to adopt a beautiful little girl who, they are told, has been abused. They’re told it might take a while for her to learn to behave and trust people. She can be sweet and loving, and in public is adorable. But in private―well, I won’t give away what happens. But, needless to say, it’s chilling.” ―Gina Kolata, New York Times “[O]n the nightmare scale, Lucinda Berry’s thriller may top the charts.” ―Popular Culture Association “A mesmerizing, unbearably tense thriller that will have you looking over your shoulder and sleeping with one eye open. This creepy, serpentine tale explores the darkest corners of parenthood and the profoundly unsettling lengths one will go to to keep a family together―no matter the consequences. Electrifying and atmospheric, this dark gem of a novel is one I couldn’t put down.” ―Heather Gudenkauf, New York Times bestselling author “A deep, dark, and dangerously addictive read. All-absorbing to the very end!” ―Minka Kent, Washington Post bestselling author About the Author Dr. Lucinda Berry is a trauma psychologist and leading researcher in childhood trauma. Amazing book

This is my first book I've ever read from Lucinda Berry and I am STUNNED. if you're into darker thrillers, this is definitely the book for you. My co worker and I are reading this book together and I finished it so fast! The chapters are shorter which I really appreciate because it made me read more. Im super excited to read another book from her! I highly recommend TPC to any reader!

*spoilers* Great potential bad execution

As a general warning- this book doesn’t have an ending. It just stops. No warning, no actual closure. It’s like the author just stopped writing and called it good enough.

I did like the switching POVs I thought that was really creative and added a lot of depth to the story. I think it was also a good example of how not great social work can be.

But again- it just ends. I wouldn’t recommend this book based on the end and the fact that Christopher is a terrible husband. He hits Hannah? And then like it’s never mentioned? And they just get Cole back in their home after she admits to trying to kill Janie? The animal abuse I felt was necessary to the story- they’re trying to make sure the reader understands something isn’t right with Janie and one of those ways besides intentionally hurting the little girl at the school and Hannah was for Janie to explain she killed the the cat because she thought it would be fun.

Still think about this one a year later

I read this a year ago and recommend it to everyone!! Definitely in my top 3 favorite books. So dark and twisted but so hard to put down. I had a jaw drop at least once a chapter.

Dark and twisted but well done

I really enjoyed the premise of this book despite it's darkness. The author really captured the emotions of each character perfectly, and although you knew there couldn't be a happy ending - that was good, because that would have been predictable. My only flaw was with the character of Christopher. I understood his motivations early on, but getting near the end, it became just too unbelievable. Spoiler alert: who would leave his wife and new baby home with a clearly disturbed child who had already committed very frightening acts? Tossing things under the carpet seemed to be his MO "in the name of love for Janie." Shaking my head here - he was a little too blind for someone who had only had the child for a few months. And I know Hannah was suffering mentally - but really, she should have picked up her baby and moved to a Residence Inn and left Christopher to deal with his denial. That was really the only part that I didn't care for.

This will not disappoint

I was skeptical from the title of this book whether or not it would really be predictable or a true felt thriller. It was scary and suspenseful I would recommend it to anyone. The short chapters make it hard to put down.

If Your Child has RAD, READ THIS!

This book hit so close to home. I could relate to the mother character because I am living that life. It is a realistic view of living with a child with RAD, even if it is fiction.
