"...A captivating look at the fine line between good and evil. I'd been writing non-fiction books and wanted to write a mystery or suspense novel. So my publisher asked me to send in fifty pages. They offered me a three-book deal and the Bowers Files began.I'd originally intended to write a story about a one-armed detective and a guy who snuck into cult compounds to free people for their family members. Neither of those storylines worked. However, all of the research that I did on cults led me to the Jonestown storyline in The Pawn .While researching the book, I was able to interview one of the three people still alive who had survived the Jonestown massacre. The book is dedicated to his wife and his son, who both died on that tragic day.People often tell me that the opening scene to this book is one of the most visceral and shocking scenes in all of the Bowers Files. The final twist only came to me after many months of working on the book.If you love stories with a jaw-dropping twist, check this one out. From the Inside Flap EXCERPT FROM CATALOG:It happened upstairs at her house after school on a Tuesday afternoon. Her parents were still at work, just like always. So Aaron Jeffrey Kincaid and Jessica Rembrandt had the house to themselves. Just like always. Most afternoons found them here, making out, fooling around in the basement. But today was different. Today was the day. Jessie smiled at her boyfriend as she unlocked the front door. "Aaron Jeffrey Kincaid," she breathed, "I love you." Her voice sounded so alluring, so alive. It said more than I love you; it said, I believe in you. "I love you, too, Jessie." He stepped past her and swung the door open. "I'll always love you." He said the words smoothly, convincingly, but he wondered if he really meant them. He wondered if he did love her; if he'd ever loved anything at all. He took her hand as they stepped into the living room. Then, with one smooth motion with his free hand, he shut the door behind them. Special Agent Patrick Bowers never met a killer he couldn't catch. Until now. Called to North Carolina to consult on the case of an area serial killer, Bowers finds himself caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Cunning and lethal, the killer is always one step ahead of the law, and he's about to strike again. It will take all of Bowers's instincts and training to stop the man who calls himself the Illusionist. Thrilling, chilling, and impossible to put down, The Pawn will hold you in its iron grip until the very last page."A captivating look at the fine line between good and evil. Not What You Might Think

I don't typically make reading selections based upon any religious faith, so I was surprised to find out "The Pawn" was published as "Christian Crime Fiction". Don't let that fool you.

Steven James has a terrific approach and methodology to crafting his crime drama. His characters are well-rounded. I couldn't help but find myself cheering for Patrick Bowers, and wanting to kick him in the butt at the same time.

This first book to the Patrick Bowers trilogy is well worth the time and effort! James' voice draws you in and doesn't let go.

Steven James does it again!

This book was bought as a gift for my sister-in-law. She was quite thrilled with the Bower novels and looks forward to reading the rest of them.

I'm confused, but persevering

I was only recently introduced to Steven James and I totally loved The King. The only drawback to The King for me was my unamiliarity with the characters so I read many other reviews of his books and decided to start at the begining and got the Pawn. I was confused - its as simple as that. I didnt understand the plots/characters. There seemed to be so many plots and sub plots that were either related or interwoven in some way. I understood the words but could not put together a mind map of how it all fitted together. In fact right up to the very end I was unsure of the who or the why.

Having said that I really enjoyed the characters and wanted to read more of Patrick Bowers and his family and colleagues. The daughter Tessa is a true gem of a character and James does a wonderful job of portraying this bereaved teen. I promptly went out and got the next in the series and I am enjoying that much much more, and loving the development of the characters.

I can only give this book 3 stars but I already know that the next review will be much more positive, so if you are reading this and wondering whether to bother I would say yes! Go to the beginning and then move forward - it really helps.

Good book

I cannot speak too much about this book, being that it was a gift for my mom for Mother's Day. She like Stephen James' books so I bought it for her. It arrived too late for Mother's Day, but when it did arrive, she burned through it within a week. So I guess she really liked it. And if she likes it, I like it. Thank you again, and perhaps in the future we will do business again.

Have a great day.

Dichotomous Thrill of Career and Family

Fast paced and suspenseful. I love the dichotomy between the protagonist's work relationship and his relationship with his daughter. Patrick Bowers is attempting not only to solve a case but deal with the difficulty of raising a daughter not biologically but legally his. In both, lives are at stake - Love the thread of each.

What a start . . . .

The first in a series of books, Pawn introduces us to the wonderful FBI Agent Patrick Bower. Facing a string of serial killings, this agent has his own demons to struggle with as well. The recent death of his wife and trying to connect emotionally with his step daughter, he has more than just work on his plate at present. And the killer in question has a alluring love of chess as with each victim is left holding a pawn chess piece.

I found this first book of the series to be a taught, riveting tale that left me breathless on more than one occasion. It's also definitely not recommended reading late into the night - not for the faint heated at any rate.

Some may find the realism of the murders a little off putting but I found it tastefully one compared to other authors of the same genre. A brilliant start to a thriller of a series and I for one can't wait to sink further into the ongoing storyline of Patrick Bower.

...and the greatest of these is love.

Full disclosure...I normally stay far away from any novel that has 'Chistian' mentioned anywhere in the reviews or that I note has been published by a Christian publisher. I buy these for my mother, who prefers her fiction 'lite' on plot and full of inspirational homilies. That said, I downloaded 'The Pawn' when I noticed that it was a thriller, offered as a 'free' selection. Yes, I buy books, but if I see what may prove to be exceptional fiction offered gratis, I often download it, skim through the first few chapters and make a decision to either keep it for future reading or delete it. I am currently on vacation in Mexico, and I decided to give 'The Pawn', which I downloaded for free, a spin. This book is not your usual 'Christian' novel. You will not find the plot about a 'young thing looking for her faith' or an 'old thing looking to regain lost faith'. There is some mention of faith sprinkled throughout the book, but it is not 'preachy' or dogmatic. This novel is gritty, well written and not for the faint-at-heart. What you will find is a husband, who is in the midst of grief over the death of a spouse, a father, who is worried about his relationship with his step-daughter and a man coming to the realisation that there is one thing in life to live for...love. Love of family, love of work, love of his fellow man...and woman. You will also find within the story the sad message of how love can become twisted and deformed. Please, give this book a chance. It's plot is based on the most fundamental tenet of Christian faith...LOVE.

My First, But Not My Last

I picked up The Pawn simply because I knew the reputation of the Author for being a master storyteller, not because I enjoy a good murder. In fact, this is the first murder mystery I've ever read, but it won't be my last. Steven James' portrayal of believable characters with cliff hanger scene changes and a plot that demands your attention has me already waiting for The Rook (It's on order).

The Patrick Bowers is likable enough that I'd enjoy him as a neighbor. His counterparts in law enforcement each add a layer of "reality" to the story that one can't help but wonder of the author is writing from personal observation of real people in real life situations.

James' back story on "the bad guy" offers the reader a sense of understanding as to why such evil desires and actions might be "natural" outcomes for someone of such experience. The reader can almost sympathize for the character while deploring the actions born out of such a sad and sordid past.

Truthfully, very few authors have ever garnered such attention from me. Stephen R. Lawhead, Ted Dekker, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien come to mind. James has me wanting and waiting for his next offering with anticipation of greatness because of the skill with which he stealthily embraces my attention and refuses to release it until the final page.

The Pawn is screenplay worthy. I'll not be surprised to see it on the big screen down the road.

Creative plot twists & a new detective specialty

Review source: not a review copy; free on kindle

Plot: The book definitely held my interest and there were several plot twists that caught me by surprise (which is hard to do). The aspect that sets this book apart from other mysteries would be the detective's specialty as an environmental detective; the book introduces the specialty and its methods over the course of solving the case.

Characters: A book like this has two main characters that matter: the detective and the villain. Both are well-done in this novel. The detective (Bowers) is really smart, but not infallible, and his personal issues affect, but don't overwhelm, the thriller plot. The (suspected) villains are well-written (i.e. chilling!) as well. There are several good supporting characters: Bowers' stepdaughter is especially affecting, and the team of investigators has several individuals with distinct personalities.

Writing style: Bowers has a quick-paced writing style that alternates points of view. Lots of short chapters--typical of the thriller genre. This book had way more character development than the thrillers I usually read, and that's a good thing.

Audience: People who like thrillers, serial killer mysteries, detective stories.

Wrap-up: This isn't the type of book I usually read, but it was free on kindle, so I picked it up. It surprised me with its depth, and I raced to get it finished. I would read the next in the series. 4/5*
