I'd been writing non-fiction books and wanted to write a mystery or suspense novel. So my publisher asked me to send in fifty pages. They offered me a three-book deal and the Bowers Files began.I'd originally intended to write a story about a one-armed detective and a guy who snuck into cult compounds to free people for their family members. Neither of those storylines worked. However, all of the research that I did on cults led me to the Jonestown storyline in The Pawn .While researching the book, I was able to interview one of the three people still alive who had survived the Jonestown massacre. The book is dedicated to his wife and his son, who both died on that tragic day.People often tell me that the opening scene to this book is one of the most visceral and shocking scenes in all of the Bowers Files. The final twist only came to me after many months of working on the book.If you love stories with a jaw-dropping twist, check this one out. From the Inside Flap EXCERPT FROM CATALOG:It happened upstairs at her house after school on a Tuesday afternoon. Her parents were still at work, just like always. So Aaron Jeffrey Kincaid and Jessica Rembrandt had the house to themselves. Just like always. Most afternoons found them here, making out, fooling around in the basement. But today was different. Today was the day. Jessie smiled at her boyfriend as she unlocked the front door. "Aaron Jeffrey Kincaid," she breathed, "I love you." Her voice sounded so alluring, so alive. It said more than I love you; it said, I believe in you. "I love you, too, Jessie." He stepped past her and swung the door open. "I'll always love you." He said the words smoothly, convincingly, but he wondered if he really meant them. He wondered if he did love her; if he'd ever loved anything at all. He took her hand as they stepped into the living room. Then, with one smooth motion with his free hand, he shut the door behind them. Special Agent Patrick Bowers never met a killer he couldn't catch. Until now. Called to North Carolina to consult on the case of an area serial killer, Bowers finds himself caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Cunning and lethal, the killer is always one step ahead of the law, and he's about to strike again. It will take all of Bowers's instincts and training to stop the man who calls himself the Illusionist. Thrilling, chilling, and impossible to put down, The Pawn will hold you in its iron grip until the very last page."A captivating look at the fine line between good and evil. Well-written, heart-pounding thriller

"The Pawn" is a well-written, heart-pounding, fast-paced forensic/detective thriller. The novel had a somewhat bleak tone. The crimes and crime scenes were very chilling, though not particularly graphic (i.e. he gives you just enough to let your imagination fill in all the gory, horrifying details). Combined with the high tension level, I'd strongly suggest you think twice about reading this novel right before going to bed.

The characters were interesting and complex, and I especially loved Bower's step-daughter. She's a very smart and brave, though emotionally hurting, young woman. (The author portrayed the main women in this novel as smart, competent, respected, and not trying to be men. As a woman, I liked that.)

The world-building was excellent, with the details about forensics, the case, and the town bringing the novel alive in my imagination. I felt like this was really happening in North Carolina, which gave me shivers that most mystery/suspense/thrillers don't achieve with me.

The main characters weren't Christian (at least, not that we're told). However, Patrick Bower was struggling with why God allows Christians (like his wife) to suffer. This was not the focus of the book, but Patrick does finally find some peace about it. (This doesn't mean he converts to Christianity.) I felt this aspect was handled realistically. Unless strongly against Christianity, I think most non-Christians would be comfortable with the amount of Christianity and how was handled.

There was no sex, a little bit of romance, and the bad language was of the "he cussed" style. Overall, I'd highly recommend this book to anyone interested in forensics fiction and/or who likes to read chilling thrillers.

Not your typical Christian Fiction

This book is fast paced, well written, and full of surprises. There are lots of plot twists and last minute revelations. If you are looking for a typical "soft-ball" Christian crime fiction, this is not it. This is a bit more graphic than, say, Dee Henderson. I read a lot of True Crime and Sereial Killer books, so this did not offend me, in fact I truly liked that the main character seemed a bit more on the "normal" (just a man dealing with life, family, faith, work, and of corse serial killers)side for a fiction character, as opposed to a man struggling with a crisis of faith who just happens to solve a murder or two in the corse of figuring out his faith.

A great crime thriller for the mystery lover in all of us

Ok, I admit it. I'm a huge CSI fan. I'm also a big fan of James' previous writings. However, this genre is a huge change of pace for him (though you can see a little of the darker side of his prose in the story, "Creatures of the Night" in Astonishing Tales) That being said, I couldn't put this book down. The characters were multi dimensional and well developed, and the plot (and multiple subplots) raced along to an enge-of-your-chair climax. I started reading it one night, and spent the entire next day immersed in the world of Patrick Bowers. For those of you who are worried that an author known for his spiritual writing can write fiction without preaching, breathe easy, and don't wait another minute to pick up a copy. While its certainly a different style than his other works, this is storytelling at its best.

True-crime suspense

The Pawn - Steven James

"Aaron Jeffrey Kinkaid sat down beside the gently humming water to watch his girlfriend bleed to death in her parent's whirlpool. Oh yes. Father would be very proud." So begins the swirling plot of The Pawn from debut storyteller Steven James. James cranks out a graphic thriller that is not for the faint-of-heart, but will certainly get the blood flowing for the die-hard of the thriller genre.

Writing along the lines of Robert Liparulo or Tim Downs, James' graphic imagery - while not gratuitous- will narrow the audience for The Pawn. Those looking for true-crime tension without watered-down confrontation with evil will appreciate James' commitment to vivid paintings of crime scene detail.

In keeping with the strength of a real-life perspective, James' protagonist, Patrick Bowers, is a flawed and floundering Environmental Criminologist; a nice touch on James' part to bring an unexpected criminal-science specialty to the front of the story. Bowers is a man teetering between the death of his wife and life without her; complete with charge of her rebellious, hurting, and near-genius 17-year-old daughter. He is a real man barely taking the most tentative steps toward life, love and faith, whose job it is to discover the patterns and associations of a string of brutal murders. The logical becomes unreasonable as the players twist and turn on each others' stories.

James does a masterful job of playing the first-person perspective of Bowers against the observational perspective of the other characters, helping us stay within reach of the hero but at arms length to the brutality of the story.

While some elements of the story seem to be intended as red-herrings, their diversionary success falls flat and the story does not benefit from them. However, they are not a distraction to the story as it plays out and as other information is gathered and dismissed.

National betrayal, espionage, cults, biohazards and just plain evil will tangle you up in this story and hold you to the fever-pitched end. If you can stomach the special effects and don't mind a story that plays itself out like sand in an hour-glass, then I can heartily recommend The Pawn. If you're looking for a safe, predictable, cozy-mystery, you might want to look a little further down the shelf.

Graphic, yes, but that's what makes it great.

As another reviewer said, this book not for the sensitive or weak. I was sick to my stomach through parts of it and decided I wouldn't read any more. Then I spent the next few days wondering what happens! I had to pick it up again. Once I did, I finished the book in two days.

It is this graphic nature that makes the book so great. I'm not talking about blood and gore, but the author's amazing ability to describe every detail, to make the characters and the plot more than tangible to readers. He involves every sense to portray authentic characters you'll think about long after you've turned the last page. Furthermore, the plot is beautifully intricate! I loved the historical threads woven throughout the story. Mr. James has thoroughly done his research and honed his craft.

One thing: Because Revell is the publisher, I expected a more definitive spiritual bent. What faith undertones exist are definitely UNDERtones. I'm interested to see if the characters spiritual journeys are detailed further in the next book.

Go see your doctor before you read this book!

I finished this book about two hours ago and my heart is still racing! Thank goodness I have a strong heart, as I had to literally slam the book shut mid-sentence a dozen times when my mind and heart couldn't handle the adrenaline rushing through my veins! From the first paragraph right through to the last the twists and turns in The Pawn are mind-numbing.

Fascinating book! Easily as good as any Stephen King, Tom Clancy or Ted Dekker novel.

I think I've found my new favorite suspense novelist and can't wait to read the next one in the series.

A Christian perpective on a fallen world.

What I Love about this novel, is that, like a few thrillers that are coming out of the Christian market at the moment, this novel is a look at the world through a Christian perspective, and not a full on novel with a hidden Christian message (There's nothing wrong with this approach, as I like many novels that go down this road) This novels deal with quite graphic themes of murder, which may put some readers off, but, unfortunately this reflects the world we live in. Issues of grief, father/parenthood are also covered. This is the first novel/book that I have come across from Mr. James, but even now, I'm chomping at the bits to read the follow on in this series [[ASIN:0800718976 The Rook (The Patrick Bowers Files, Book 2)]]

Outstanding

I'm laughing at Eric Wilson's review because Eric is one of my all-time favorites. But he's going to have to slide over for Steve James and share the spotlight. What a thrill to find another suspense writer in the Christian market who can deliver this level of excellence.

Great book...I guess I'm mad, too, but I'll get over it in time to buy ROOK.

Keeps you guessing!

This book was amazingly well-written! Believable characters, fascinating trails of evidence, and a mystery that draws you in and keeps you guessing til the very end...yet it all comes together very neatly and makes complete sense when you are done!

There are a few gory parts that were a little too much for me, but that's to be expected in a serial killer novel! Just wanted to forewarn those who may not like that kind of thing.
