A New Standard for the Single Volume Commentary

The Oxford Bible Commentary is rooted in the historical-critical method of exegesis—a technique which aspires to understand Scripture in context of its time, place, author, audience, purpose and no less through its original languages. Within this historical/contextual framework, other relevant methods are employed such as source-criticism (which considers the “sources” used in the composition of the Bible itself, or a part such as the Pentatuech, or a single text, or even so much as a passage, phrase or word) and redaction-criticism (looking for signs of editing in the Bible) and form-criticism (studying literary forms such as the epistle, or Gospel, or Law-code as a way to differentiate genres and gain insight to the texts as unique literary compositions). These academic methods are a proven way to understand scripture in a “scientific” way without damaging religious and biblical traditions. In fact, the result is greater spiritual insight, technical knowledge and the strengthening of tradition through a better understanding of the Bible from its cultural and all other cultural contexts included. Now the commentary is written in fluid style which makes an easy read of the profound topics included; that is to say, this is not just a "reference" work; it is a thoroughly interesting read and is great cover-to-cover. At times, articles contain the traditional verse-by-verse interpretation or at others the more contemporary paragraph style commentaries are employed. This well-researched and finely formatted commentary is never dull, is very approachable and affordable. The Oxford Bible Commentary asks to be used with the Oxford Annotated Bible (NRSV), although it is not an imperative. Structurally, the Commentary is divided thus: Old Testament, Apocrypha, Extra-Biblical Literature, New Testament. Additionally, there are outstanding introductory articles to every text, various essays and detailed, colored maps and an exhaustive bibliography and index. Overall, the Oxford Biblical Commentary sets a new standard for the single volume commentary and is a must have resource for layman, clergy and students.

Super informative for Bible Study.

Just beginning to use this commentary and so far it's great. I do wish it was available in larger type. The comments are easy to understand. Often Bible commentaries have to much theocracy in the opinions. This was a good purchase for me and I will be using for my weekly Bible Study.
