Description

About the Author Byrd Baylor lives and writes in Arizona, presenting images of the Southwest and an intense connection between the land and the people. Her prose illustrates vividly the value of simplicity, the natural world, and the balance of life within it.

Features & Highlights

  • With a lot of practice, a young boy learns from his old teacher how to listen to the sounds and songs of the natural world.
  • When you know “the other way to listen,” you can hear the wild-flower seed bursting open. You hear rocks murmuring and hills singing, and it seems like the most natural thing in the world. Of course, it takes a lot of practice, and you can’t be in a hurry. Most people never hear these things at all. This is the story of an old man who had a special way of hearing and of a child who hoped to learn his secrets. Byrd Baylor and Peter Parnall have combined their unique, award-winning talents to celebrate the world of nature.

Listen

I adore the author of this book. It is beautiful.
I work in an outdoor education setting with kids who may have not experienced the outdoors very much and this book I always read before beginning a nature based activity. I take them some place quiet outside away from everything and read to them. Then I have them sit and listen to nature and we talk about what they are hearing and how often we can go without noticing the sounds around us.
This book helps to drive that point, about being patient and waiting to see the beauty that the natural world has to offer. If you have a classroom of stir crazy kids and you want to take them outdoors to experience nature, I stronly suggest that you read this to them because it really helps to focus.

Deep, awesome, spiritual

This book was recommended by a minister and read to the congregation. Poetic and memorable - has the potential to move the reader or listener beyond the daily noise to a place where one can commune with nature, or at least appreciate that possibility is available. A book to encourage us to slow down and listen to trees, rocks, animals - to hear communication that is not words - and be nourished and enriched by it.

Every child should have this

This is possibly the best children's book out there - and there are some great ones. In a world of TV and video games we need to learn to quiet our minds and LISTEN. Not just for children. I have read this book to several adults. So far I have bought three copies. Get it!

Beautiful

This book is breathtaking. I somehow just discovered Bird Baylor this last year and I'm so sad I didn't know about her through out my entire existence thus far. Her books are splendid, magical, poetic and makes one feel connected. This particular book is a favorite of ours- it's simple, but profound. Teaches children to stop and listen. To treasure the beauty of simplicity and nature. To just be. Such a moving book.

Wonderful

I LOVE Byrd Baylor books.
Didn't have kids, so I don't have grandkids, but these days, I'm giving these to my contemporaries - Elders like me. :)
The art work is gorgeous and Ms. Baylor's poems are stunningly simple and, for me, uplifting.

How to listen

I like this book. It teaches us how to hear mother earth. There are so many sounds in the world that we do not take the time to hear or know what they mean. Learning to listen to the wind, or the sound of the trees or of an insect, all teaches us that every sound has a meaning. Great book for all ages.

Wonderful Book

I love this book. I bought it after seeing two copies in a woo woo healer's office. I figured if she had TWO copies, it must be good. I actually loved it, and it made me search out the books by Byrd Baylor, and I loved those as well. I particularly loved "The Way to Start a Day", which I also bought for a friend. The books are great for adults and children alike.

Books for all ages

I love these books by Bryd Baylor, illustrated by Peter Parnell. They can be read to small children who will quickly be able to read them before they are actual readers. Adults will appreciate the sensitivity of the words and the pictures and the identification of all of life in an interconnected sense of all. I spent many years on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona and New Mexico, and can identify with the author's appreciation of the land and Native peoples. thank you for sharing your talents with the rest of us.
