Description

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2—This humorous parody of a familiar tale, "The Gingerbread Man," is sure to become a hit with the young martial arts crowd. Sensei makes the ninjabread as a reward for his hardworking students. But when he opens the oven, "KA-POW! Out [leaps] the Ninjabread Man, alive and kicking." Children will relish Gall's large, action-inspired artwork. The rhyme and meter of the phrasing are great fun for reading aloud, with a twist on the well-known line in the climatic scene, "Try, try as best as you can, you can't beat me, I'm the Ninjabread Man!" For those who already know the story, Leigh has created a satisfying concluding page. VERDICT Little ninjas will eat this title up, and primary-age children will enjoy making comparisons with the original tale.—Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA Praise for Dinotrux by Chris Gall: * "Dinotrux ruled their world, and now they're likely to rule this one too. Fantastic!

Fantastic! My husband & I purchased this for our nephew's fourth birthday. Arrived in perfect condition today, and we couldn't stop laughing as we read it. So much fun. The story follows the format of the traditional Gingerbread Man tale, but with a very well-executed ninja theme. Tons of action, and it has perfect rhythm, rhyme, and repetition--the words flow so well. We especially liked the "warning gong" and the "cloud of sugar dust" details. The ending is very well-done, too.

Loved the illustrations. Lots of humorous details, like the mouse slicing a block of cheese with his sword. The "KA-POW!" page spread is great, too. Even the illustrated inside covers are awesome--it shows a dark, winding path with the characters on it.

The last page includes a recipe for baking ninjabread cookies and a helpful glossary of words used in the book ("sensei", "gong", etc.) Paired with the ninjabread men cookie cutters, this makes a great gift for any little kid who loves fun, silly, laugh-out-loud books. It's probably more geared toward boys, but another nice detail is that the snake is a girl.

A new holiday tradition!

My kids love this twist on a classic. There is a recipe at the end. We bought cookie cutters and made some ninjabread men and had a ninjabread war. They had a blast! This book is now a holiday tradition!

Read, read, read as fast as you can!

In this fun and fast-paced retelling of the classic Gingerbread Man tale, four ninjas train to be the strongest, fastest, smartest, and sneakiest in the land. Sensei wishes to reward their progress with ninja bread. Of course, when he opens the over door, out jumps the Ninjabread Man. A balancing Ninja Bear, a Chinese-star throwing Ninja Snake, a nimble Ninja Mouse, and a cunning Ninja fox all attempt to defeat the Ninjabread Man. Children of all ages will be captivated by vibrant motion-filled illustrations and the clever tale of a quick little cookie trying to hang on to his sugary, powdery coating! Read, read, read as fast as you can!

Obsessed 5 year old.

My sons kindergarten teacher read this to them in class one day and he was hooked. He even asked to use his own money to purchase it. We read it almost every night. Cute twist to the classic gingerbread man story, especially if your child is into karate or ninjas.

Great book for a 6-year old

Great book for a 6-year old. We used the recipe at the end to make the cookies. I used a bit less flour and spices since they were for the kids. I also needed to add more butter and about 1/2 of an egg. Delicious and so fun for them to decorate.
