The New Jerome Biblical Commentary

The New Jerome Biblical Commentary will facilitate the needs of anyone serious about the scholarly study of Holy Scripture. In addition to the super-abundant exegetical material, there lies, as an appendix to the NJBC, copious and learned articles pertaining to the nature of inspiration, the formation of the canon, hermenuetics, biblical and extra-biblical history, and various other topics of similar interest. Contained in the NJBC is a lifetime of worthwhile and edifying study. As a whole, the NJBC is animated with a brilliance and profundity that pays honorable respect to the enduring legacy of St Jerome.

As a student studying for lay ministry within the Catholic Church, I purchased this book on the recommendation of one of my professors. I can enthusiatically say it is well worth it. It is not an easy read as it is a scholarly text, but the information is invaluable to serious study of the Bible. Does everyone need this book? NO! But those involved in serious Bible teaching or study will find it to be one of the most used books on your shelf.

THE NEW JEROME BIBLICAL COMMENTARY (NJBC) is an impressive work. Any student of religion or biblical history would benefit from this book. The editors were accurate and precise.

Even though the editors of the NJBC are Catholic, their work is honest and fair. The NJBC would benefit serious bible students whether they were Catholic or non-Catholic. The editors revised this work from the earlier 1968 edition, and this makes the NJRC cuurrent with recent scholarship. Any serious reader would benefit from this book. I highly recommend the NJBC.

I just want to correct a single inaccuracy in an earlier review that described the New Jerusalem Bible as a translation of the French New Jerusalem Bible rather than from the original languages. That is not true. While the Jerusalem Bible was based on a French translation, the New Jerusalem Bible was translated directly from the ancient texts, referring to the French translation only in order to clarify certain words.

Excellent scholarship! Not intended for mere entertainment... Great for most informed believers!!

One thing you get from this commentary is a wealth of knowledge not only from the bible but about the church fathers, Critical views of today and the past. Its a great reference commentary to understanding the bible more clearly. Im very happy with my purchase and would recommend it to all who seek to understand the bible more clearly.

The New Jerome Biblical Commentary is a very dense, yet useful commentary which provides a good treatment of Scripture.Worth the investment and time for using it fruitfully in study.

I recently went through the Catholic Church's RCIA classes and converted to Catholicism. The written materials provided by the Church to RCIA participants are useful, but very basic. I found a copy of this book in the Church library and began consulting it regularly after each RCIA class to get a better understanding of the Scripture presented in the classes.

After my baptism I treated myself to a copy of my own.

This is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to explore the Bible in greater detail than one typically gets through just reading the Scriptures alone. This commentary works through the Bible book by book and verse by verse, providing a very significant amount of background detail and analysis of the Biblical text.

Anyone wanting to understand the Bible in greater detail would find this book useful. I refer to my copy each time I read the Bible. Highly recommended.

Potential buyers should be aware, however, that this commentary is written from a Roman Catholic perspective. Those from other denominations will find a wealth of useful material in this book but, in the interest of full disclosure, potential buyers should be aware of the book's Roman Catholic perspective.
