Nominated for the 2022 Strand Critics Award32nd Annual Reading the West Book Awards NomineeA CrimeReads Most Anticipated Book of the YearA Southwest Book of the Year “Tod Goldberg is a terrific writer, and The Low Desert is a smart, surprising page turner.” —Don Winslow"Engaging and supremely satisfying from the first page to the last." —Lawrence Block"The wild west is alive in The Low Desert , a collection of stories as brutal and compelling as the landscape itself." —Brad Meltzerxa0"Axa0lot of what makesxa0Tod Goldberg’s lively, often entertainingly snarky story collection ' The Low Desert 'xa0so cohesive is its preferred destination for murder and despair: West Coast exurbia . . . ' The Low Desert ' has plenty of tight, flinty, noir-y sentences . . . But his style, in the best stories here, is distinguished by a gallows humor featuring men who are just smart enough to work a grift but not bright enough to escape the ensuing trouble." —Mark Athitakis, Los Angeles Times "The fast-paced fictional crime stories in Tod Goldberg’s latest collection feature a cast of characters navigating mysterious, tragic and occasionally funny situations . . . These 12 stories, set in the same universe as Goldberg’s 2014 novel, Gangsterland , are anchored in southern California’s Inland Empire, and coalesce into a stirring portrait of the region." —Annabel Gutterman, Time "Twelve spare, stylish contemporary crime stories that exemplify the craft." —Barbara VanDenburgh, USA TODAY "He remains one of the most literary of working crime writers.xa0Most of the stories in The Low Desert succeed by blending the thought-provoking nature of literary storytelling with the brisk action of pulp noir . . .xa0There’s something for everyone here, including Goldberg’s trademark biting humor . . .xa0This imagined desert underworld, home to racketeers and regret, buried bodies and criminal clowns, is an engrossing place to spend time. The thoughtful treatment of Las Vegas is particularly appreciated. One hopes Goldberg continues to explore these places he knows so well." —Geoffxa0Schumacher, KNPRxa0"Terrific . . . Pure fun, just prose bliss . . .xa0Goldberg, who can rattle off one-liners like a stand-up, strikes a somber tone of loss throughout The Low Desert . . .xa0These stories play genres with an expert’s hand." —Richard Raynor , Alta "Extraordinary . . .xa0Have pity, Mr. Goldberg, on all the metamodern prose stylists who will try to follow in your footsteps and fail to achieve anything as complex and subtle as your loosely connected, elegantly writtenxa0Gangster Stories . . .xa0Each story in The Low Desert is razor-sharp on its own, but taken altogether, they make for a collection as searing as the hostile locale of the title. Mr. Goldberg plays with form to tell a new sort of gangster story, an examination of the lives organized crime touches and almost inevitably destroys. It’s one of the best collections of crime stories I’ve ever read and without a doubt the best collection of gangster stories I’ve ever enjoyed." —Doreen Sheridan, Criminal Element "By turn surreal, tragic, and darkly funny, the 12 stories in this exquisite collection from Goldbergxa0hold up a mirror to the unique landscape of Southern California’s Inland Empire . . .xa0With a cast of low-rent mobsters, drifters, and hardscrabble working stiffs, Goldberg does a brilliant job of revealing the underbelly of the area, past and present. These spare slices of literary noir are the work of a master storyteller." — Publishers Weekly ( starred review)xa0"These are stories Elmore Leonard would love—not just because the razor-sharp Goldberg wastes no words in cutting to the heart of his stories, but also because he highlights the humanity and inner lives of even his most bent characters . . . A thoroughly enjoyable collection by a bona fide original." — Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"Like Mario Puzo, Goldberg understands that the way to write about organized crime is to write about the people who live in that world. Yes, they are criminals, but most of them aren't villains. A sterling collection that showcases the author’s gifts as a storyteller." — Booklist "Tod Goldberg . . . has written a collection of stories that are keenly observed, wryly funny, and heart-wrenching in equal measure. If wisdom can be gleaned from taking a sharp look at the human impulse toward violence, then Tod Goldberg is one of this nation’s sagest storytellers." —Attica Locke, author of Heaven, My Home Tod Goldberg is the author of more than a dozen books, including Gangsterland , a finalist for the Hammett Prize; Gangster Nation ; The House of Secrets , coauthored with Brad Meltzer; and Living Dead Girl , a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Heart Wrenching Literary CA Noir

I would give Tod Goldberg's collection of stories, The Low Desert, ten stars if I could. Twenty! The stories, which MUST be read in order, are hardcore and funny and heartbreaking. Aside from the brilliant writing--he has an insane ear for voice--the stories weave together to create a whole--Cubist even--world in and around desert communities in eastern CA and Las Vegas. Like these misunderstood cities, there's so much more to the characters who live there--Goldberg gives each such depth it's like he set out to fill in the blanks. What's behind the sorrow in that aging cocktail waitresses eyes? What drives a hired killer to go back to school? How many times as that security guard killed? And what did that do to his soul? I marveled at his sentences, laughed at his jokes, and cried at his stark yet empathetic understanding of humanity. Can't recommend highly enough.

The new Elmore Leonard. And something else, too.

This book does something I’ve never seen before. Goldberg has reinvented the short story into a thrill ride and gone further within it’s usually tight boundaries to deliver a kind of joy and fun that’s been missing from serious literature. And yet this is serious literature. It’s clever, erudite, eloquent, pithy, and any other word you’d ascribe to art. But it’s also thrilling and fun and joyous- even when it’s deadly serious. This book is also a great entry point to Goldberg’s other books, particularly Gangsterland and Gangster Nation. Will certainly be among the best books of the year. Goldberg is the inheritor of Elmore Leonard’s crown. Really.

So real it scared me

Every character in this collection is fully drawn and utterly believable. There are few if any loose ends; the stories are linked so that questions which might arise in the second or third story are answered in later ones.

Darkly funny crime short story collection with a lot of heart

This story collection was so terrific that I allowed myself to read only one story a day so I could make it last a little longer. It would difficult to pick a favorite story since each one had so much to offer. This collection is so amazing because these stories manage to do so much - this collection seamlessly mixes the darkest side of criminal world, but somehow also offers humanity, humor, and heart. I felt both entertained, but challenged. I love that Goldberg can write about crime and gangsters with page turning intensity, but never romanticizes them. I love that he can write a story about the depths of human sadness, loneliness, and love, but never without acknowleding how fallible and imperfect people are--even those we are rooting for in the end. This really is a brilliant story collection.

Noir Perfection

A great collection of stories about gangsters and crime set in the desert. A strong style and twists in the stories kept me on the edge of my seat. Dark but at times funny too, one of my favorite reads of the year. And that opening story - keep your eye on the clown.

This collection is a gut punch

Tod Goldberg is a brilliant writer. And while the stories are billed as “gangster stories,” they are so much more. Goldberg knows how to write about our deeply flawed world in a way that gets to the bone of what it means to be human. These stories are all “bangers.” They’re engaging and readable and so very very beautiful. Some of them are gut punches, but we need voices like Goldberg’s in these times. I am sad that I finished this book and will dip back into them often.

I loved it!

First off, this is a work of fiction (silly me!), with a terrific variety of stories that take place over a period of multiple generations. I say that for a reason, as the stories are very loosely connected, with characters (or kinfolk of characters), popping up suddenly later on in the book. It's subtle, but I really enjoyed this twist.
Mr. Goldberg is a terrific writer, and I finished this book in record time. This book is extremely gritty, with some truly despicable and evil characters, but the writing is very "street-wise", and business oriented, as organized crime is meant to be.

The New Don Winslow

If you've read Gangsterland & Gangster Nation, then you'll love this collection of short stories that all touch on crime and/or criminals. Don Winslow does this as well as anyone, and Goldberg is simply great at it. You will recognize some of the "Gangster" characters here as well. If Netflix or Prime doesn't lock up Goldberg RIGHT NOW for any number of series based on these books, then they are nuts.

Great tales in short story format

I'm only part way through this. The first story is amazing. The second story is chilling. I am biased because I grew up in SoCal, and some of the stories reference my old stomping grounds.I raced motorcycles in some of these locations. But anyone will love these stories.
