Description

Advance praise for Alan Hlad and The Long Flight Home "Hlad's debut snares readers with its fresh angle on the blitz of WWII, focusing on the homing pigeons used by the British, and the people who trained and cared for them. Descriptions of the horrors of war and the excitement of battle are engaging, and the unusual element of the carrier pigeons lends an intriguing twist. This story will speak not only to romance readers and WWII buffs but also to animal advocates and anyone who enjoys discovering quirky details that are hidden in history." -Publishers Weekly "Alan Hlad tells a dramatic, fictionalized story about the real use of pigeons during World War II.Compelling.The engaging plot and fascinating details of the National Pigeon Service make it a rewarding read. Many civilian pigeon-keepers volunteered to try to turn the tide of the war, not knowing if it would work or be worth the loss of their birds in the danger-ous process. The Long Flight Home captures the contributions of the average citizens who, in a time of peril, rose to meet the challenge in heroic ways." -Bookpage "This well-researched historical novel presents a wealth of period detail and develops a romantic story inspired by the actual discovers - reported in newspapers more than a half century after the war - of the skeleton of an English homing pigeon carrying a still-legible coded message. The destructiveness of war, particularly the random carnage caused by the bombing of civilian areas, is vividly described, as well as the bravery of many citizens, including the homing pigeons of the National Pigeon Service." -VOYA Magazine on The Long Flight Home "Hlad's debut delves into an obscure piece of World War II history: the covert mission of the National Pigeon Service, which deployed an army of homing pigeons to send messages to Britain from Nazi-occupied France.Ollie's attempts to escape from France are gripping, and Hlad adeptly drives home the devastating civilian cost of the war." -Booklist "In Alan Hlad's fascinating story based on true events, he explores the special bond between an orphaned girl who raises the homing pigeons and an American soldier desperate to help the Royal Air Force." -AFAR Magazine, The Best Summer Reads, on The Long Flight Home "Based on true events, The Long Flight Home has everything I love in a novel-the sense of discovery, the epic drama of a life-or-death situation, and the soaring sense of hope gained from the depths of despair. It's a gorgeous, impressive first novel by a hugely talented author."-Susan Wiggs, # 1 New York Times bestselling author"Tense, heartwarming and life affirming, The Long Flight Home gives a fresh slant on heroism in WWII."-Rhys Bowen, New York Times bestselling author of In Farleigh Field, The Tuscan Child and the Royal Spyness novels"I've always been fascinated by homing pigeons, and Alan Hlad makes these amazing birds and their trainers shine in The Long Flight Home -a sweeping tale full of romance and espionage, poignant sacrifice and missed chances, uncommon courage and the ongoing costs of war. A compelling debut told with conviction and great heart. "-Paula McLain, New York Times bestselling author of The Paris Wife and Love and Ruin " Alan Hlad is a corporate executive turned writer. • It is September 1940—a year into the war—and as German bombs fall on Britain, fears grow of an impending invasion. Enemy fighter planes blacken the sky around the Epping Forest home of Susan Shepherd and her grandfather, Bertie. After losing her parents to influenza as a child, Susan found comfort in raising homing pigeons with Bertie. All her birds are extraordinary to Susan—loyal, intelligent, beautiful—but none more so than Duchess. Hatched from an egg that Susan incubated in a bowl under her grandfather’s desk lamp, Duchess shares a special bond with Susan and an unusual curiosity about the human world.    Thousands of miles away in Buxton, Maine, young crop-duster pilot Ollie Evans decides to join Britain’s Royal Air Force. His quest brings him to Epping and the National Pigeon Service, where Susan is involved in a new, covert mission to air-drop hundreds of homing pigeons in German-occupied France. Many will not survive. Those that do will bring home crucial information. Soon a friendship between Ollie and Susan deepens, but when his plane is downed behind enemy lines, both know how remote the chances of reunion must be. Yet Duchess will become an unexpected lifeline, relaying messages between Susan and Ollie as war rages on—and proving, at last, that hope is never truly lost.

Hlad's First Novel a Remarkable Work

From the time I opened "The Long Flight Home" I was unable to put it down. Except for meal breaks, I read the book in one sitting. The story of Ollie and Susan involves romance, intrigue, history, and a healthy dose of love for animals. The repeated obstacles the two lovers face keep the reader engaged non-stop throughout the book. I especially appreciate the author's courage to avoid stylistic fads and to use nothing more trendy than simple, lucid English to convey his poignant story of love and human venality. His language is transparent; it never draws attention to itself. The book's prose transmits an imaginative, thoughtful, and well researched plot. Whether one classifies it as romance or historical fiction, "The Long Flight Home" grabs the reader and offers rich entertainment from front to back. It is only the second novel to which I have ever given a five-star rating.

Brava!

This book is fabulous! Buy it now! Don't wait! I've read a lot of books in the WWII genre, but this is at the top of my list. I've not read one about this unique subject of homing pigeons used in the war to carry messages from England to France and vise versa.

It was a fascinating subject, and Hlad wrote a beautiful story intertwining the homing pigeons and the love story of Susan and Ollie that was written with care and sensitivity and intrigue and sorrow. There was nothing tawdry about Susan and Ollie's love. It was painted as a pastel watercolor.

I adored Susan's grandfather and wanted to meet him! Susan's and his relationship was heartfelt and lovely. The way they cared for each other just makes you want to be a better person in your own relationships.

All the characters in the book had very differing personalities, and each was written so you could see them, hear them, feel them. From the beginning of the book to the end, you either deeply care for the characters or loathe them. Most of them I cared for.

It is beautifully written, and I give it a glowing recommendation. It was a thrill to read a book that was edited correctly, where there aren't any misspelled words or grammatical errors. Brava!

Dreadfully predictable.

Although I love WWII stories and animal stories I found this book to be close to awful. The romance improbable. The conversations trite. The characters so cartoonish as to be idiotic. The action completely predictable and dismal after horror after impossible bad luck.
Very little information on the actual lives & training, breeding, feeding etc of the pigeons.
The idea of the story had possibilities- but sadly unrealized.

Homing Pigeons and a War-Time Romance

The Long Flight Home is primarily set in Eppings, England 1940 at the beginning of what has come to be known as The Blitz, where the Luftwaffe bombed London for almost 60 straight days. Eppings, England holds the farm home of Susan Shepherd and her grandfather Bertie who are both volunteers in the National Pigeon Service where they raise homing pigeons, or in this case – war pigeons. Shortly after the story starts ‘Ollie from Maine’, through a set of circumstances, begins helping them on the farm. He and Susan develop feelings for each other, but shortly after are separated when the first pigeon mission begins.

When I first heard about the book, I will admit my assumption was that it would be more geared toward the detailed inner workings of the National Pigeon Service as well as how it was run and setup during this time frame, what the messages contained that were carried back by the pigeons when they went to France, what was acted upon based on the messages, and so forth. Something a bit real and gritty. However, the book is primarily more focused on the relationships between Susan, Ollie, Bertie and Boar (the antagonist) during this time of war.

In the book, we learn information on these types of pigeons such as one-way and two-way communication and hear the harrowing tale of Cher Ami, who is probably the most famous homing pigeon known and can be seen, I believe, at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. I always enjoy books such as these that bring out a new part of history that you may not have known about or at least aren’t as well-versed in.

So although it wasn’t quite the book I had originally expected, once I adjusted to a different style of book I found it enjoyable and endearing. The characters were easy to like, except for Boar, who is a jerk throughout the entire book. It was a pleasant, easy read that shines a new spotlight on a little known part of WWII and even WWI.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for this advanced copy and the opportunity to provide my honest review.

Learned a bit more about WWII and the hardships of civilians in neighboring Britain. Also learned about using pigeons for communication.

Pigeons’ heroic role in British WW2 drama

Did you know 250,000 homing pigeons played a part in Britain surviving the Nazis? This tender drama tracks a young woman & her grandfather who raise pigeons as part of the National Pigeon Service’s efforts to help reclaim the skies from the Nazi Luftwaffe. A young man comes from America to join the RAF & helps on the farm until circumstances leave him stranded in France, isolated except for a pigeon-lifeline back to Britain. Erie similarities to Ukraine civilian casualties, including a real-life bombing of a British maternity hospital make me wonder if war will ever be off the table.

Good young adult story.

The story was solid - some of the character development was predictable. Author felt rushed towards the end when the book fast forwards 20-40 years rather abruptly

I couldn’t put it down

It has been a very long time since I’ve read a book cover to cover in less than a week. This book in chanted me and kept me reading late into the night. The history was fascinating as I knew a little about the war in the 1940s. Thank you for the enlightenment and the enjoyment.

Excellent and very informative novel !

I have spent countless hours reading novels about WW2 and never encountered any of the historical information that I found in this amazing book. It’s also a love story that my wife would enjoy so it would appeal to a broad range of readers. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
