Description

''Outstanding! . . . The best ever, by the best in the field . . . The ultimate combination of imagination and realism. '' -- Tom Clancy '' The Legacy of Heorot is well written, action packed, and tension filled . . . Makes Aliens look like a Disney nature film.'' -- Washington Post ''Page-turning action and suspense, good characterization, and convincing setting . . . May be the best thing any of those authors has written.'' -- Denver Post ''Spine-tingling ecological tale of terror . . . A story as relentless as the great white shark of Jaws .'' -- Locus ''Entertaining . . . The novel is best in its sympathetic treatment of the once formidable scientists who wake from cold sleep with impaired mental powers.'' -- Publishers Weekly ''The book's tough realism and complex characters make the story seem frighteningly real; it reads much like a Stephen King horror novel.'' -- School Library Journal Larry Niven is the multiple Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author of the 'Ringworld' series, as well as many other science fiction masterpieces. Spotty writing; serious plot problems

The premise is generally good, and the narrator Tom Weiner is quite effective. That said, the story really breaks down and it makes the book really hard to take seriously. I sat listening in disbelief as colonists began committing suicide by monster. I don't want to ruin the story, but a brief illustration will explain. I'll try to avoid spoiling too much, but this example should be very helpful.

At one point over a dozen colonists are killed by a giant alien amphibian they call a "monster". The remaining colonists decide to TURN ON defenses which are just waiting around to defend the colony. The colonists determine the monster which attacked them likely swam 50 miles to get to the colony, and that there are probably many more of them. Then, despite this threat, they have a big party with square dancing, and three of the colonists decide to have a race in the nearby river that connects to the ocean. The same ocean they suspect the monsters come from.

While the river racers are getting ready, no one mentions the giant alien amphibian that just recently wiped out 8% of the colonists and trashed half the colony. No one mentions the risk of traveling in a river (that connects to the ocean) with giant amphibian monsters nearby. Everyone is just happy dancing around and watching the 3 colonists racing in the monster-infested waters.

Just guess what happens. And it just gets sillier (yes really). Very disappointing.
