Description

Review Praise for the Seekers series: “Hunter creates a richly sensuous world filled with cruelty, beauty, tenderness, savagery and just enough underlying legendary background to add mystery…fans of animal fantasies will haunt the shelves for the next volume.” — Kirkus Reviews “These stories will be welcomed by the Warriors series’ many fans.” — ALA Booklist “The suspenseful conclusion will build in an eager audience for the next installment.” — Publishers Weekly About the Author Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. In addition to having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. She is the author of the Warriors, Seekers, Survivors, Bravelands, and Bamboo Kingdom series. Erin lives in the UK.

Features & Highlights

  • Is this journey's end . . . or just the beginning?
  • Toklo, Kallik, Lusa, and Ujurak have finally reached the Last Great Wilderness, the legendary bear paradise they've been searching for. But while his companions think they've come to the end of their long journey, Ujurak feels a deep unrest. Is this truly where they're meant to be?
  • In the Last Great Wilderness, one by one the bears begin to remember their true natures. Toklo feels the urge to hunt caribou and mark his territory as a brown bear should, and Kallik feels the pull of the ice within her. It's only Lusa, happy just to be in the wild, who fears the day when her friends will leave her to follow their own paths.
  • As the bears adjust to this new life, disaster strikes. The friends are forced to venture into the world of the flat-faces to save the life of one of their own. Once there, the end of their journey seems farther away than ever, as a new path spreads out before them.

Great characters but preachy

If you've kept up with this series you have to love the characters of Toklo, Kallik, and Lusa. Ujurak is also interesting due to the fact that he's alternately completely innocent and wise. If it didn't have such strong political overtones this would be a great adventure story with great characters.

However it seemed like this book was an attack on capitalism and not so much urging environmental stewardship. The good flat faces are nonwhite Native Alaskans, and the bad flat faces are white people. This seems very racist to me. Even though the authors are English and obviously make money from capitalism, it seems like they have a resentment toward capitalist white people. It's really quite strange that this would be the case but it's also very blatant.

I do think it's important to "save the wild", but demonizing white people and capitalism shouldn't be necessary for that.

I would have been much happier if the book would have promoted environmentally responsible resource use, rather than demonizing the fact that humans need energy and use natural resources at all.

It's precisely because this is so well-written, with Toklo, Kallik, Lusa, and Ujurak being so lovable, that this book can be damaging and promote racism. It's the white capitalists that supposedly keep Toklo from having his own territory where he can live like a brown bear should, it's white capitalists that are making Kallik's ice disappear (no mention of China, Mexico, or other developing nations contributing to global warming?), and it's white capitalists who are "killing the wild", forcing the spirits to send dreams to Lusa and Ujurak.

I'm a Warriors fan but at least in Warriors you aren't bashed over the head with overt racism and anti-capitalism.

I bought most of the series for my daughter. ...

I bought most of the series for my daughter. She had started the series by checking out book 1 and discovering that they didn't have book 2 and the rest were wait listed. I bought 2-6 for her to give to her school library after she has read them.

Can't wait for the next one!

I was really shocked when I saw this book out in stores - and the fact that I hadn't read it yet. So when I saw it sitting on the shelf in a bookstore, I bought it immediately. Being an Erin Hunter fan, I knew what to expect - excellent detail, a perfect touch of action. And I got those things. While reading, I felt like I had been sucked into the book; that I was standing in front of the characters and watching every single thing happen in front of my very eyes. Whenever I was able to peel my eyes off the words, I discovered that, no, those things in the story hadn't actually happened. Whoever loves Erin Hunter's books or animals, this is for you.
