As it did for the Mestrahs of old, this knife grants an ability to a new leader above and beyond the magic they already possess: the divine gift of Influence, the power to bend the will of enemies and allies alike. That said, the Mestrah would remind anyone who would desire this magic for themselves that though the knife has been reunited with its altar, it is heavily guarded, and its spell will only work for those of royal blood.” The announcer casts a purposeful look across the crowd, who snicker and whisper. “But this power is not free.” She waits for the muttering to quiet. “Representing the many difficult decisions a ruler must make, taking a human life is a seal between gods and leader. A promise to do whatever is commanded, and to realize that with each gain is a cost.” She turns to me, sweeping a dramatic hand at the stairs. “Our sacrifice.” Reverent silence falls over the crowd. I’m not given a name. I’m a symbol, and I know they think I was chosen for this, but it’s eerie to see them look at me with such blind conviction. I can’t help but feel it was too easy to fool them. “Go on,” whispers the woman in pink. Like I’m being too shy in marching to my death . Gods, everyone is watching. Do I go like I’ve accepted this? Do I run? I don’t think I’d get far in the crowd. The nobles won’t risk disobeying the Mestrah to help me, if there’s even anyone here who would. I can’t go back the way I came. My guard will drag me screaming down the stairs or mark me to walk against my will. I can’t stomach the thought of either. And I really can’t believe that yesterday, I was watching a glass boat come down the river and dreaming of being here. Breathe , I tell myself. This isn’t over yet. Jet may have failed epically as my rescuer, and Hen may have finally met a challenge she can’t overcome, but maybe that means that in this story, I have to rescue myself. It’s at least a week’s ride to the finish. That’s plenty of time to get used to the desert and whatever team I’m with, and make Fara proud by coming up with a plan. I can do that. Of course I can do that. I take a troubled step forward. The pressure of a thousand eyes on me thickens the air, but I force myself to keep my chin high, my shoulders straight. People bow their heads and cross their arms over their chests as I pass. I almost choke at the irony of being surrounded by so many people when there are only three I want to see in the entire world. “The Mestrah has awarded the advantage to Princess Sakira,” the announcer says. “She will be the first to leave, and shall begin with the sacrifice in her possession. Following her, after the span of an hourglass, shall be Prince Jet, and an hour after, Prince Kasta.” I’ve reached the platform. I don’t want to walk past Kasta and his monstrous First any more than I want to walk through fire, but I grit my teeth and move without looking at them, though I feel Kasta’s gaze as I go. Jet still won’t look at me, no more than a glance and back at the crowd, and I bite back some choice words for him as I pass. At last I take my place beside Sakira, who glances at my dress and then has the decency to look sorry for me. And gives me hope my chances of escape are better than I thought. Maybe once I tell her what happened, she’ll be horrified and let me go. You would think that among three siblings, one of them has to be reasonable. Her Healer looks as uncomfortable to be here as I am. She also looks like she wants to say something, but I have to confess I’m rather irritated with her right now, too, and I turn away before she can speak. “So by the will of Numet, Rie, and Sabil,” booms the announcer, “and all the gods who have called for this occasion, we wish luck to the heirs and everlasting life to our future Mestrah!” The horns blast again, and the people cheer and roar, chanting the name of their favored heir. The platform vibrates with stomping, the air with sparks and light and water, and I startle when enchanted fire bursts overhead, blasting us with heat as the flames swirl into the shapes of grinning jackals and charging horses. And then it doesn’t matter what else is happening, because Sakira has snatched my wrist and yanked me toward the front of the platform. “Jump!” she shouts. “Gods!” I yelp. We plunge into the masses, who clear for us at the last second, my ankle rolling painfully as I land. Sakira drags me down the stairs, through the parting crowd, and toward a fountain where three desert horses toss their heads: two bay geldings and a buckskin mare the color of wheat, who tries to pull her handler’s arm out of its socket when she rears. And by that I mean that’s literally what she was thinking when she did it. The mare sees us coming and swivels her head, ears flat against her skull. You, she thinks, her dark eye on Sakira. She’s harder to read than the cows at the stable—I’m not as familiar with her movements as theirs—but her anger is so strong, my magic translates it to words easily enough. No ride, she thinks . I’ll kick. I’ll kick and hurt! I dig my heels into the sand and jerk out of Sakira’s grasp. “Up!” Sakira yells, pointing toward the mare. “Are you drunk?” I shout. “She clearly wants to hurt us!” “I know. That’s part of the fun.” “You realize I’m not allowed to die until we reach the caves?” Sakira turns around, gripping my shoulders. She’s practically a twin of her mother, though her sleek hair is black like the Mestrah’s, and her blue eyes are her father’s, too. “You have a week left to live,” she says. “You want to spend it plodding along on an old nag?” “That would be ideal, yes.” “Sorry.” She shoves me at the mare. “If you’re with me, you’re going to have fun.” Two servants hold the mare now, one on each side of her bridle. They’re trying to look cheerful about it, but I think they’re just hoping I’ll be fast and they can leave. “All right,” I tell the mare, pushing back the heat of her anger with every thread of calm I can summon. “I know you’re not excited about this—” Whisperer , the mare spits. Let me go. Let go! “Look, I told them I didn’t want to ride you, but this is the princess. She’s like our alpha. And she’s saying—” “Are you talking to a horse?” Sakira asks. “I’m a Whisperer,” I say. And to the mare, “Just don’t kill us for the first few minutes, and you’ll be out of here. No more crowd.” Mm , the mare snorts. No crowd? “No crowd, no noise. Just the desert. Wide, open desert.” The mare trembles and looks around, but she finally lowers her head. Fast. Be fast . “You have magic?” Sakira studies the side of my head, but I don’t dare look away from the mare. “You just speak Orkenian to her? That’s seriously all you do?” “We communicate through emotion,” I say, grimacing as I take hold of the saddle. “My magic turns the words into something she can understand, and likewise.” The mare stays still, but now that I’m touching her I can feel her impatience and fear flood my body as strongly as if I’d been doused in water. It amplifies my own nerves, and I try to ignore the shiver in my fingers as I push onto her back. Oiled leather gleams beneath my hands. Lilies and swords decorate the saddle’s neck, and the small hope that I might get my own horse dies when I see the seat’s long enough for another rider. “That’s the most useless talent I’ve ever heard of,” Sakira says, pulling into the saddle behind me. “No wonder the gods are sacrificing you. Yah!” Off we plunge, the mare cursing, Sakira whooping in my ear, and me clinging to the front of the saddle, my mother’s jewel clutched in my hand. People dart out of our way, small animals fear for their lives, and I try to think of the path ahead as the first part of my escape, away from the royal city, away from Kasta. The desert rises before us like the back of a slumbering beast. The crowd thins. Shops yield to houses and then huts, and the beat of the mare’s hooves overtakes the shouts. A glance back reveals Alette and the Healer are close behind; the priest’s shining hair whips behind her cloth headband, the Healer’s face is slicked in sweat. Sakira whoops again in my ear, and the mare whinnies in response. Freedom , she’s thinking. Freedom. Freedom . The last of the huts slides by, and the path changes from paving stones to packed clay. Freedom , I agree as the royal city shrinks into the haze. Read more

Beautiful, enjoyable character-driven fantasy with great themes

4.5 stars, rounded up
This was SO GOOD. It took me a while to read it--first to get to it, because I was in a slump and every time I thought about reading kind of went "blah..." And once I started, I could have read right through--I didn't, because 1) I was focused on finishing an edit on my WIP that I was behind on, 2) I didn't really want it to end, since the next book isn't out yet, and 3) ...writers, do you know that feelings when you read a book that you just vibe with so deeply you have a crisis because why in the actual HECK am I even BOTHERING to write when BOOKS LIKE THIS ALREADY EXIST and I can't possibly compete? Yeah, that's how a lot of POISON was for me.

Kasta and Jet do have a lot of Calore brothers from Red Queen vibes, but I liked them WAY better.

This book had me laughing, had me on the edge of my seat, and wondering who to trust. The worldbuilding is fascinating, the narrative voice is so dang strong and flows so smoothly, and the NUANCE. The royal siblings are all so multi-faceted and layered. There were a few times Jet bordered on being TOO perfect and good, but then you'd find out more about his past mistakes and it would humanize him. There'd be moments of thinking Sakira or Kasta were sort of one-dimensional, and then NOPE, there's more to them.

There's some flowerly narrative language that sometimes I was like "yeah...I dunno what that is supposed to mean," but that's a personal style thing, really. I'm also VERY unclear if the "shadows" slipping over Kasta's face are figurative or literal, like...sometimes it makes it sound like he might be literally possessed by something dark, and other times, it seems like it's more of a metaphor and a narrative device to frame the battle between his two sides. My logical brain doesn't really like that I'm unsure which it is.

But the theme of KINDNESS and the meaning of the TITLE and the twisty plot and how Zahru grows (had to pause to remember her name...anyone else have a bit of trouble remembering the MC's name when the book is in first person? haha) and the development of the side characters and the evolving bigger world situation with impending war...ugh. Just so good.

This book cured my reading slump.

Enjoyable Read

**4.5 STARS**

I read this book in one night. And look at that cover! It might be my favorite cover of 2020 releases so far – it’s simple yet oh so vibrant with all that purple. Brilliant!
My Reactions:

My Attention: read this in one sitting

World Building: amazing world building

Writing Style: flowed from beginning to end

Bringing the Heat: 🔥 there is maybe one scene with some heat

Crazy in Love: argh….Zahru and two brothers…a love triangle

Creativity: I love everything about this world, it’s magic, kingdom, the people in it

Mood: amazed

Triggers: violence

My Takeaway: Be your own hero!

What I Liked:
Where do I start? I love Zahru – she’s fun, she’s daring, and kind-hearted. She thinks on her feet and is a good listener (she is a Whisperer who can communicate with animals). She loves her family, her friends and her home. I love her heart.
The characters from Hen, her best friend, to the Princes and the Princess – it’s an array of personalities and it was fun getting to know everyone!
The action – and there is plenty! There is politics involved with three royal sibling vying for the throne by way of a trial. But the drama between these siblings, my goodness – I love how different they were, how they had different goals and motivations and how confused I was about who would make the best ruler. But there is action to the very end!
Zahru is the hero of her story. This is such an inspirational story. Throughout the book people look down on her and though it hurts, she doesn’t let it get her down, she keeps moving forward because the race to the finish never lets up. But she digs deep within her to do the right things no matter what obstacle she is faced with. Her power, being a Whisperer seems weak and everyone tells her so – but her strength is kindness, listening and caring. I like that her strength isn’t magic…it’s connecting with people.
The world building is lush and vibrant. I love the magic system and the politics. I enjoyed learning about the history of Orkena and wonder what will happen in the next book.

Random Notes:
The only thing that bugged me was the love triangle. It reminded me a bit of The Red Queen series and I was hoping it wasn’t going to go there…but there it is. It sets off in motion some events that make me want book two in my hands. But I do hope this triangle is nipped in the bud…we shall see.

Final Thoughts:
This is a fun read with an exciting new world. Zahru comes off as the weakest link but her power and strength gets her through many dangers in this story. This is an amazing debut novel and I look forward to book two!

The Kinder Poison Review

From Lala’s Book Reviews

The Kinder Poison takes place in a world where people have different types of powers from being able to communicate with animals to wielding different elements of the earth. The strongest of those who hold magic are going to the palace to become one of the royal siblings protector in their journey to become the next heir.

The book begins with Zahru and her friend Hen getting on the boat to travel to the palace to watch the beginning of the celebration of the Royals picking their traveling companion.

Her world is turned upside down when the people checking the guest in on the boat realizes the alias that she used to leave and mistakes her for someone with more power than a girl who can communicate with animal, but it’s to late to fess up.

Zahru finds herself wrapped up in the crazy sibling rivalry between Jet (the brother who the majority wants to rule), Kasta (the mysterious prince who feels like he has something to prove), and Sakira (the princess that is only seen as a pretty face put wants to prove her worth) when she is chosen as Kasta’s protector in the journey.

Things turn bad when Kasta suspects Zahru and Jet plotting against and goes to kill Zahru when she gets the make of the gods as the sacrifice keeping her alive just long enough to see the next heir.

Through the journey, Zahru is somehow traded between the siblings where they each have their reason for wanting her next to their side for the last checkpoint in the race to win. Near death experiences and traveling in the desert causes her to learn secrets of some and making relationships grow.

This is one of my favorite fantasy books I’ve read this year! I like fantasy, but I can find it hard to get into some books because of some worlds being over detailed or a million different plots going on in the first book, but The Kinder Poison is beautifully written with a story that tells itself without having to add hundreds of fillers to entice readers.

I can’t wait to read the next book to read about these characters since there was a pretty good size cliff hanger!

So much action... what is going to happen!?!

I read this because @xenatine said to go read it. And boy does she know my reading preferences! This was a super fun YA fantasy adventure, the 1st person pov is becoming one of my favorites, especially when the FMC is sassy and really funny.

Something I find very enjoyable is when characters aren't perfect. Each of the main characters in this adventure are flawed and have to rely on usually more than one other character at some point. A lot of growth happens and pieces are being moved around.

There are definitely twists and betrayals, but not to the point where I have any clue where this next installment is going to lead us. I normally don't enjoy a love-triangle, but this one is subtle and I'm enjoying it for now, but I'm going to have to see a clear winner at the end. All in all, this is a bingeable read for me, and I'll absolutely be rereading it before I start the final book when it releases.

Excited to read the sequel asap!

Zahru is a fantastic protagonist to follow, as she sneaks into a palace she had dreamed of seeing, gets caught up in a magical race for the throne (between two brothers and a sister), and is forced to be the human sacrifice at the end of the journey.

I loved reading Zahru's pov and her thought process, while being held hostage by each sibling, is realistic and thoughtful. Her love for her family and best friend Hen is pure and a breath of fresh air.

I'm sad I took so long to read and finish this book but I have the sequel on hand. I'm ready to dive right back into this political power struggle between siblings, their determination to prove themselves to their father the Mestrah, and to see which side Zahru will stay loyal to.

Not the fantasy I expected

This did not go the way I expected. I liked the concept of kindness being a weapon that would bring down monsters, but I felt the delivery of this was a bit boring and fell off track from what it was supposed to have been. Yes Zahru was kind but not SUPER kind as I’ve seen others are. All she really did was befriend a lost boy who never truly felt love in his whole life. So I felt that making her kindness as a *weapon* was not the best tactic as it failed to deliver the epicness a fantasy novel demands…

I did enjoy the adventure of the race as it kept me on my toes and always had me second guessing who to trust and believe.

Absolutely amazing! Beautiful storytelling!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book was amazing!! I read a beginning excerpt back a few months ago and really enjoyed it. The rest of the book did not disappoint!!

I really enjoyed that the main character isn't this all powerful magician like a lot of books do. The "chosen one" trope gets old especially considering most of us can't relate.

I also loved all the stories and elements added in. I really connected and understood all of the characters. Also, the adventure they go on is very unique to any stories I've read before. The intensity and humor of the story played really well together also.

I really loved all the characters if I'm being honest. Even the "bad" characters were more so troubled than inherently evil.

I'm really excited to read the next book in this series! Also, any future book this author write I'll be quick to buy!

As for genre, this qualifies as Fantasy and YA.

Solid beginning to the series!

I was captured by the pretty cover, picked up the book, and decided to give it a shot! I'm a sucker for incorporating romantic elements into fantasy and I loved the Zahru-Jet-Kasta dynamic. What can I say??? I love characters exploring what they want in relationships, even when what they want is SO CLEARLY BAD FOR THEM AND BAD FOR THE WORLD and there is one dude who is actually deserving of the attention! I mean, this isn't all about the romance though. Our main character, Zahru, is someone who feels like the magic she possesses is really mundane. I mean, I suppose it is when it's compared with that of her best friend and her mom, whose gifts are much more glamourous. I like that she struggles with those feelings with inadequacy because at that stage in your life, who doesn't? The stakes get upped when she's thrust into a life-or-death struggle that almost certainly means death for her when she becomes the sacrifice earmarked to signal the end of a tournament for the throne. Poor Zahru, who only wanted a little adventure! She's a fighter, though, and absolutely refuses to just become the sacrificial lamb in the competition between the kingdom's most prominent siblings. Definitely a fast, fun read where you root for Zahru to find a way out of her predicament the whole way (while also rooting for some romance to happen while she's at it).

Hooked!

The minute I got to page 2 of the excerpt, I knew I was hooked. The word building in this story is amazing. It describes the most vivid images in my mind and let's me uses my imagination to the fullest - from the warm tones of the desert to the crisp blue seas and all the colors of their intricate clothing. I could almost see myself living there.

The Kinder Poison is a fast paced book filled with adventure, rivalry and political intrgue. I devoured the excerpt in a sitting. It was very refreshing to see the heroine whos power is often ignored and looked over, compared to one who is strong right from the start. Zahru wants to explore and visit the palace so of course, what's the most sensible action in a fantasy novel? A plan to sneak into a banquet hosted by the royal family. Of course resulting in being choosen the sacrifice which helps the reader get insight on how each heir works, their pros and cons, plans and how they cope.

Overall, I grabbed this excerpt knowing nothing but the small summery provided, only to be captured into this magical world.
