Description

An Amazon Best Book of May 2020: Fans of novels such as The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society , Lilac Girls , or The Chilbury Ladies' Choir should make sure to add The Jane Austen Society to their library. Set in the tiny village of Chawton, during and after World War II, it’s a story about eight people from very different backgrounds—from a farm laborer to a movie starlet—who, in saving the house Jane Austen last lived in from developers, unexpectedly save themselves from loneliness, grief, and loss. Author Natalie Jenner does a marvelous job of showing how a disparate group of villagers could go from enduring their disappointments in quiet solitude, to being united, both by their love of Jane Austen and their determination to preserve her home. With a humorous mix of characters, from both upstairs and downstairs, that would do Julian Fellowes proud, and affectionate, pitch-perfect character studies of each, The Jane Austen Society pays tribute to the power of literature to heal and bring people together. But best of all, it will charm readers and make them feel as though they share the sorrows and the triumphs of their new friends: Adam, Adeline, Andrew, Evie, Frances, Dr Gray, Mimi, and Yardley. —Vannessa Cronin, Amazon Book Review "Brilliantly crafted, weaving together the lives of eight people in the most intriguing of ways....There is something utterly calming about The Jane Austen Society ." ― Barbara Delinsky, New York Times bestselling author of A Week at the Shore "A complex dance of love, social position, and gossip that would make Jane proud." -- BookBub "Anyone seeking an antidote to contemporary chaos will find a welcome respite among the members of a group whose outer lives may appear simple, but whose inner lives need the kind of balm Austen knew well." ― The Washington Post "In my opinion, Natalie Jenner’s first novel, The Jane Austen Society , could not have been published at a more appropriate time...it’s a wonderful, magical journey to the end of the book." ― Fredricksburg Freelance-Star "Just like a story written by Austen herself, Jenner's first novel is brimming with charming moments, endearing characters, and nuanced relationships...Readers won't need previous knowledge of Austen and her novels to enjoy this tale's slow revealing of secrets that build to a satisfying and dramatic ending." ― Booklist (starred review) "Readers who enjoy character-driven novels will want to read this book. Like Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows’s The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society , it’s a must-purchase for libraries of all sizes." ― Library Journal (starred review) "Delightful... Jenner’s immersive character development is juxtaposed against her study of Austen’s characters, providing clever insight into how the trials of Austen’s life were revealed through her books." ― Publishers Weekly "Few things draw disparate people together so quickly as discovering they love the same writers. Few writers cement such friendships as deeply as Austen does. I believe that the readers of Jenner's book will fall in love with the readers inside Jenner's book, all of us thinking and dreaming of Austen the whole while. What could be better? Nothing, that's what! A wonderful book, a wonderful read." ―Karen Joy Fowler, New York Times bestselling author of The Jane Austen Book Club "I can’t remember the last time I was so utterly charmed by a novel as I am with The Jane Austen Society . Natalie Jenner creates a world populated with characters who come together to preserve Jane Austen’s home in the village of Chawton after WW II. And in so doing she explores love and grief and hope, all while plunging us headfirst into Austen’s words. A celebration of the human spirit and the power of stories, I just love this book!" ―Ann Hood, New York Times bestselling author of Comfort and The Obituary Writer "Natalie Jenner's lovely debut novel, The Jane Austen Society , is a charming, yet bittersweet tale about the power of literature ― the beloved Jane Austen in particular ― to heal and elevate the human spirit in the aftermath of World War II.” ―Marie Benedict, New York Times bestselling author of The Only Woman in the Room "Natalie Jenner's The Jane Austen Society is an extremely impressive debut novel populated with fully-developed, nuanced characters that resonate with the kind of humanity that made Ms. Austen's stories so universal and timeless." ―Mark Sullivan, bestselling author of Beneath a Scarlet Sky "Fans of The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society will adore The Jane Austen Society , which tells the story of an eclectic group of people in a post-World War II English village who come together to save the beloved author's home and legacy. Author Natalie Jenner has penned a charming and memorable debut, which reminds us of the universal language of literature and the power of books to unite and heal." ―Pam Jenoff, New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Girls of Paris "The Jane Austen Society is a joyous novel. Written beautifully from the first sentence to the last, Natalie Jenner casts a spell that will have you falling in love with each of her lovingly-drawn characters, with the charming English village in which the story is set, and with Jane Austen herself. I read it straight through, relishing every word and regretting only that it eventually had to end. With tears still in my eyes from the perfect closing scene, I ran to pull a Jane Austen novel from my bookshelf, eager to remain in the magical world Natalie Jenner conjured. In a time where it is so easy to feel we are all at odds with one another, The Jane Austen Society is a beautiful reminder that connection and care are at the heart of the human experience." ―Kim van Alkemade, New York Times bestselling author of Orphan #8 and Bachelor Girl "Prepare to meet 'three or four families in a country village' who embrace their passion and form a literary society in honor of an author whose enduring appeal, after 200 years, reminds us of what should be paramount in our lives: compassion, love, and reading!! The Jane Austen Society is an uplifting tribute to its inspiration and the nobility of the human spirit. Natalie Jenner could be the next Helen Simonson.” ―Laurel Ann Nattress, editor of Jane Austen Made Me Do It and Austenprose.com Natalie Jenner was born in England, raised in Canada, and graduated from the University of Toronto with consecutive degrees in English Literature and Law. She worked for decades in the legal industry and also founded the independent bookstore Archetype Books in Oakville, Ontario, where she lives with her family and two rescue dogs. NOT the book you are expecting!

I was shocked and terribly disappointed by this book! I love Jane Austen novels, and hoped after reading several reviews that this book would be an enjoyable read. The first few chapters were a little slow, but beginning to gain momentum. I had finally begun to get a bit interested in the people when I come to this chapter (centered in old Hollywood) full of profanity and culminating with a GRAPHIC RAPE/SEXUAL ASSAULT scene. I wish someone had warned me! I cannot believe that in all the reviews I saw and read there was no mention of this. Are people so "used" to this that no one noticed? So I am writing this review to warn other readers who would prefer not to encounter such graphic material. (Yes I know that rape and sexual assault are a part of the real world, however that doesn't mean I want to read about it in graphic detail!) Not even going to finish the book now - I don't trust the author (r reviewers for that matter.) Just imagine how triggering this might be for any young woman who is an actual assault survivor?? There should be ratings on books.....

Disappointed

Ms. Jenner's idea for this story is a good one - especially for Jane Austen fans (which is why I pre-ordered the book); however, it fell flat. There is one scene in the book that made me very uncomfortable. Ms. Jenner apparently doesn't seem to think that her readers will know what is going on her story if she doesn't give all the graphic details. There were other elements in the book I felt were just there because it's what's expected these days. Makes me realize that I should be ordering from the library and not purchasing books that don't come recommended by a trusted friend.

‘The Jane Austen Society’: A Nice Novel Gives Tribute

STORY | Life in the village of Chawton isn’t the same as it once was. The aftereffects of war still plague some of its residents. This includes Adam Berwick, a man who lost his brothers to war; and the town doctor, Gray, a man who lost his wife and still grieves her death even as someone else inspire his protective side. Adeline is excited to welcome her child into the world, an event that is helping to heal her heart from the loss of her young childhood sweetheart husband; Frances Knight lives in the shadow of her father’s imposing figure, and as a result never finds a happy end; then there’s the American actress Mimi Harrison, a woman who is losing all she knows even as she is about to say yes to a marriage that may not be right for her.

All lives who seemingly have nothing in common save for the one thing that makes them feel happiest the works and words of Jane Austen…

REVIEW | This is one of the most hyped novels of this, its publication year. Or it is in my circle. As a result, this is one of those go-out-and-preorder-right-away types of books. The concept of this novel is lovely and while I can appreciate certain aspects of the plots and their varied characters, The Jane Austen Society doesn’t captivate me in the way I wanted it to.

The first 5-10 chapters don’t read well because of the various and multiple characters. Some of whom don’t have the role or impact on the story one would assume. The flurry of people, all while trying to remember where and how to place them, plus the various different dates (until the majority of the books settles in the mid-40s) does nothing to help to ground the reader. All this said, as I’m the only one I’ve seen share reservations, I suspect (again!) this is a “me” thing rather than a larger group of readers.

Some of the characters are extremely endearing, and it’s sweet to pull out the ways Jenner pays tribute to Austen (whether by mirroring some of her characters, love stories). ‘Guernsey’ is all kinds of cozy reading for me, so it’s that novel which still holds my heart when it comes to this time of multi-arc storytelling, but those who love Austen-esque fiction are likely to enjoy The Jane Austen Society. It’s something I did want to enjoy, but my reserved feelings while reading it just won’t go away.

Content: F-word (rare, but 2-5) and adult thematic elements (there's an attempted rape/sex; loss of children, husband, the war, homosexuality).

Rape scene troubling, not needed!

I found this book deeply disappointing! Having been a rape victim myself, there was NO need to have that in the book. What does violence to women add to any story. I believe Jane Austen would find this book deeply disturbing!

Disappointing

I would recommend Longbourn by Jo Baker for any Austen fans over this book.

Had to throw the book away!

I received this book as a gift and was shocked by the graphic details of the sexual assault along with the loss of an expected baby at 8 mos. pregnant. Quit reading after the first 100 pages which were filled with death; of two brothers, a wife, a newly married husband, and an expected baby. Really??? In good conscience I could not give the book to another person, only to be surprised and disappointed by the content as I was.

I will stick with Jane Austen

I really wanted to like this book. I adore Jane Austen, and perhaps the title got one over on me. The references to the works of Jan Austen were the knly redeeming quality even though it sounded like a Lit 101 book report. Character development is non-existent and I kept waiting for the plot to pick up. It is literally about a group of people that form a club to preserve Jane Austen memorabilia. If that sounds like a must read, them this may be for you.

Meh

I love Austen; I don't love this book. It feels like the author REALLY wanted to write some sort of academic paper analyzing Austen's characters but instead created some really goofy soap opera characters that speak aloud what she wanted to publish. There are some forward moving plot points along the way (a few of which grab your attention and give you hope that it was just a slow start up), but they're few and far between. I knew I wouldn't like it after the first few chapters, but I like to finish what I start. In the end, a few predictable things happen, a convenient twist that doesn't actually become consequential is thrown in, and the epilogue gives you a "where are they now" that by then you don't really care about. It does feel a bit British, but in a tourist-y kind of way.

Absolutely Awful

I truly don’t understand why this book has so many glowing and five star reviews. I am on Chapter 7 right now and will probably give it up right here. It’s that awful. The book starts out interestingly enough, but by Chapter 2, it tanks. The story is not at all believable, the characters have as much dimension as paper doll cut outs in a diorama box and the written dialogue and descriptive narrative is so poorly written you’d think it done by a 12 year old. This book sheds a very dim light on the work of Jane Austen and I doubt she’d be flattered by having her name tossed about in such drivel as this.

Steak dinner

Writing, development of character was uneven. Not a compelling read. I was glad when it ended. At one point I felt as if I had been served a luscious looking steak, only to find it all gristle...I chewed and chewed to no satisfaction.
