Features & Highlights

  • Today’s top stand-up comedians sell out arenas, generate millions of dollars, tour the world, and help shape our social discourse. So, how did this all happen? The History of Stand-Up chronicles the evolution of this American art form – from its earliest pre-vaudeville practitioners like Artemus Ward and Mark Twain to present-day comedians of HBO and Netflix. Drawing on his acclaimed History of Stand-up podcast and popular university lectures, veteran comedian and adjunct USC professor Wayne Federman guides us on this fascinating journey. The story has a connective tissue – humans standing on stage, alone, trying to get laughs. That experience connects all stand-ups through time, whether it's at the Palace, the Copacabana, the Apollo, Mister Kelly’s, the hungry i, Grossinger's, the Comedy Cellar, the Improv, the Comedy Store, Madison Square Garden, UCB, or at an open mic in a backyard.

The Official History Book of Standup Comedy

Federman's recounting of the history of standup comedy is as entertaining as it is informative; like watching a good History Channel special at the end of a long workday. It's thorough yet short enough for you to feel like a comedy expert in just a few hours' time. I highly recommend this to comedians, performers, students, teachers, family, friends, and coffee tables. It'll have you saying "huh, would you look at that" by the second page, guaranteed.

Discover your favorite funny person!

Fast, precise overview. A great starter to help point you in the direction of which funny person you’ll want to explore. You could read this and suddenly feel drawn to read everything Twain or absorb all of the stand up of Richard Pryor. Buy it - read it - see how many funny men and women you’ll fall in love with.

Interesting.

My buddy suggested I read this book. I thought it was a good read but I was pretty disappointed. He has an entire chapter on alternative comedy but mentioned Bill Hicks once maybe twice. My personal disagreement with the author has no impact on the quality of the book and shouldn't be taken to represent the quality product that this book undeniably is.

GOOD OVERVIEW

A sweeping look at the history of standup that feels superficial at times. Hard to avoid as he has taken on such a broad topic. While some sections explore forces that shaped the art form, others felt maddeningly shallow. I liked more focused reads better like “I’m Dying Up Here” that concentrates on a specific phenomenon.

Factual, Fascinating & Funny!

This is a very well-researched book. Full of historically-important, riotously funny, famous & not-so-famous, & also now-forgotten comics who entertained generations of audiences. If you are interested in learning about the influences of earlier comics on those that YOU may now know, THIS is the book for you! They were FUNNY yet worked CLEAN! VERY well done! ( :-}) )

Learned a lot about early comedic performers

Reading this book, I learned a lot of names that were new to me. Some I will look up to learn more about them. The book is rather brief; I would have enjoyed more detail. But still, it's interesting.
