They'll give you years of solid help in overcoming sin so that you'll live more fully with others and truly transform your corner of the world! Lawrence G. Lovasik (1913-1986) did missionary work in America's coal and steel regions, founded the Sisters of the Divine Spirit, a missionary congregation, and wrote numerous books and pamphlets emphasizing prayer and the Eucharist. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Be charitable in your speech. Many a saint in Heaven has been sent there by a heartening word. Perhaps many a soul that is lost and shut out from God's sight forever would be a shining light in the land beyond the grave, but for the fact that someone failed to say a kind word at the proper time or failed to leave a cruel word unspoken. The most common form of sins of anger is that of harsh, loud, intemperate words. You sin by anger in using angry words every time you raise your voice when you feel upset by something that is said or done to hurt your feelings; when you say harsh and bitter things without pausing to think of the meaning of what you are saying; when you use profanity or vulgar or even obscene words in your anger as if you are trying to shock and hurt those who cross you; when you make accusations against others that you know you have no right to make; and when you feel resentful against others. Angry words become more harmful and more wicked when they are associated with cursing. With the tongue a person praises God, and with the tongue he curses men, who have been made after the likeness of God. Cursing is a sin against the reverence due to God's name. But another motive for avoiding it can be found in the fact that it arouses a special bitterness in the heart of its victim. No one likes to be cursed at, for cursing is an insult to one's dignity as a human being. The sensitive are deeply wounded by it. Angry words cause smarting wounds that are hard to heal, and sometimes never heal. They are like knife stabs to the heart. Only too often, in the recklessness of anger, or in a peevish, jealous spirit, you may give vent to words you will perhaps someday regret bitterly. A kind word is spoken as easily as a harsh one - even more easily, for with it goes the consciousness of its value and the good it will do; whereas, with the harsh, unkind word goes the consciousness of cowardice and meanness and of great harm done. By harsh words, you write on the souls of men that which you cannot rub out. A cruel remark to your mother can write itself upon her loving heart and give her great pain. It will hurt her every time she thinks of it. To fail to give to your friend in distress a kind word may sear his soul. You cannot rub out the memory of it. The best remedy for harsh, angry words is silence. You must learn to say nothing at all, when you know that anything said will hurt another in some way. If you are tempted to anger, train yourself to keep silence for thirty seconds and say a little prayer for patience. Then you will deal with people reasonably and effectively. Read more

Lovasik's "Power" - ful Kind of Book on Daily Christian Living

Read this book's appendix first. It's a series of questions which, answered one after another, takes your temperment temperature and provide Catholics a confession checklist. It also proves the book's back cover tagline, ""You're almost certainly not as kind as you ought to be..."

"The Hidden Power of Kindness" is written firmly from a Catholic mindset to a Catholic audience. Author Lawrence Lovasik, a Catholic priest, condemns birth control and points to criticism of clergy and religious as egregious sins against charity. His somewhat scolding tone (you'll faintly smell fire and brimstone) recalls "old-school" Catholicism, the book first published in 1962. But this book provides any faith-based person timely reasons and reminders to place more Christian kindness and charity into their daily lives.

Building his case from Scripture and quotes and anecdotes from Catholic Saints, Fr. Lovasik shows examples of kindness in word, deed, and thought. He urges readers to reconsider how they treat words spoken in confidence and jest (with especially harsh words on sarcasm), inner thoughts on forgiveness to people who've hurt them, how to act when two people disagree. He cites empathy and punctuality as examples of kind behavior, and silence as "the language of God," and key means to holiness. Throughout, Lovasik's narrative and chosen quotes stress charity and kindness aren't alone virtues without Christ-like purpose.

The book is inspiring, its wisdom timeless (especially its poetic words on how to treat those who are sick and dying) and its tips practical when embedding kinder behavior in everyday life. (It also gives the lie to a now common idea of rude, even cruel behavior being acceptable in the name of "honesty.") "The Hidden Power of Kindness" shows how kind words and actions, born from love and fear of God and desire for God's glory, provide unseen dividends in a society unused to them. Recommended as a practical,near-reference manual for daily human interaction.

how-to achieve kindness

THE HIDDEN POWER OF KINDNESS is something of a spiritual how-to guide for achieving kindness. The nature of the book can be discerned from the full title (...A Practical Handbook for Souls Who Dare to Transform the World, One Deed at a Time). It was for me more of a self-help spiritual guide than a testimony of the power of kindness.

Mr. Lovaski's approach in this book is quite spiritual and religious in making the case for transformation through kindness. For a more historical (less of a self-help) proof of the power of kindness, you may want to read THE SEEDS WE SOW, KINDNESS THAT FED A HUNGRY WORLD.

life changing and challenging book!

This book is no fluff. Every paragraph can be pondered and meditated upon. Great book for lent or anytime. Everyone can benefit from this book including non-catholics or non-Christians for that matter. Obviously I highly recommend this book. I'm surprised it's not a classic.

The Hidden Power of Kindness. A classic!

The Hidden Power of Kindness. A classic. In order to humble my pride which I sorely need, I note all the vices, underline all the holy virtues to replace the vices in his book and turn them into a prayer to God. Then I take my contrition to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I will continue to study the beauty of the charitable virtues in this classic book until I memorize them. Afterall I will have to give an account of my life to God; He who is so loving, so merciful, and so very kind.
