Features & Highlights

  • Charlie Donlea, one of the most original new voices in suspense, returns with a haunting novel, laden with twists and high tension, about two abducted girls—one who returns, one who doesn’t—and the forensics expert searching for answers.
  • Nicole Cutty and Megan McDonald are both high school seniors in the small town of Emerson Bay, North Carolina. When they disappear from a beach party one warm summer night, police launch a massive search. No clues are found, and hope is almost lost until Megan miraculously surfaces after escaping from a bunker deep in the woods.A year later, the bestselling account of her ordeal has turned Megan from local hero to national celebrity. It’s a triumphant, inspiring story, except for one inconvenient detail: Nicole is still missing. Nicole’s older sister Livia, a fellow in forensic pathology, expects that one day soon Nicole’s body will be found, and it will be up to someone like Livia to analyze the evidence and finally determine her sister’s fate. Instead, the first clue to Nicole’s disappearance comes from another body that shows up in Livia’s morgue—that of a young man connected to Nicole’s past. Livia reaches out to Megan for help, hoping to learn more about the night the two were taken. Other girls have gone missing too, and Livia is increasingly certain the cases are connected. But Megan knows more than she revealed in her blockbuster book. Flashes of memory are coming together, pointing to something darker and more monstrous than her chilling memoir describes. And the deeper she and Livia dig, the more they realize that sometimes true terror lies in finding exactly what you’ve been looking for.

Unexpected Twist

At first I was concerned about it being too dark. But it had such a twist to it. He is a great writer. I can hardly wait for his next book.

Terrible editing, tortuous language

I don't know who this guy's editor is, or who his advance readers are, but there are so many errors in here it drove me crazy. A car has brakes, not breaks. Just one of the many mistakes I found. There are also many instances of tortuous sentence structure I had to mentally edit in my head in order to make sense of them. The story was sometimes way too specific, especially when it came to describing the work of the coroner and autopsies. I did make it to the end of the book, but it was truly a struggle. Maybe his later books are better.

Pulls at your emotions, you FEEL the story

Keeps you guessing til the end. I really loved this story, tugs at the heart and makes you think about how real this story is. I listened to this on Audible and couldn't stop listening, I cleaned and listened, worked and listened. Definitely worth your purchase.

That Ending

This was my first time reading Charlie Donlea.

I found this book interesting, but I was not blown away by it. There was some confusion in the beginning as to who was taken when, and I eventually grabbed pen and paper to make notes on characters and dates. Thankfully chapters were labeled with dates and timing. The red herrings were there, as I had two or three possible suspects in mind. Some of the characters were creeps, and I had no sympathy for one of the girls who was taken.

It was a good book with an ambiguous ending that didn't really satisfy me.

Excellent, enjoyable book

Excellent book. Good writing, well paced complex plotting and pacing, believable and nuanced characters, the right number of red herrings, and interesting story by author who has done research. Because the story is told over several time periods (a year ago when girls when missing and current time when the investigation takes place) it would be an easy narrative to botch. Donlea handled it beautifully. I'm perplexed by readers who find the ending unsatisfying. I thought it was just right.

EXCELLENT LISTEN AND WILL KEEP YOU GUESSING.

This was very good. I have read and listened to enough books to know who the killer is. I could not figure this one out. This was a great listen. Thank you!

Not bad but not great

Not bad but not great. The plot was interesting but some of the things the main character did didn't make sense, and the ending wasn't great. I probably won't try another one by this author.
