The Frandidate By Jim Benton Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing Copyright © 2008 Jim BentonAll right reserved. ISBN: 9781416902331 Chapter Three Let's get this party started Miss Shelly was Franny's favorite teacher of all time. Franny's earlier teachers hadn't really understood her, and it's difficult to learn from somebody that runs screaming from the classroom every time you walk in. But Miss Shelly was almost never afraid of Franny, and usually had something interesting to teach. Franny paid close attention as Miss Shelly began writing that day's lesson on the blackboard. For a moment, Franny was so thrilled that she almost shouted. It looked like Miss Shelly was writing "electricity." Along with chemistry, nuclear power, and brain removal, electric power was one of Franny's favorite subjects. But as Miss Shelly finished writing, Franny could see that she had written "election," which, when compared to electricity, sounded pretty darned boring. "An election is when people vote for a person who will represent them, and organize them, and if necessary, lead them," Miss Shelly explained. "We'll be electing a president of the class." Franny perked up a little. "Can this president tell everybody what to do and punish them if they disobey?" Franny asked, while she quickly sketched out a few ideas for a dungeon she could build at the school for just that purpose. "Well, maybe not punish. But the president can help determine some of the rules in the class, and the president is a person that people usually look up to, and I suppose that the president does tell people what to do," said Miss Shelly. Franny smiled. Maybe this wasn't so boring. "So I want you all to decide who you want to be president of the class," Miss Shelly continued. "People who want to be elected are called candidates. If you want to be a candidate for president, you'll need to tell us all why. The class will be sharing these ideas all week long. May the best man win." Franny smiled to herself. It was more like may the best Fran win. Copyright © 2008 by Jim Benton Continues... Excerpted from The Frandidate by Jim Benton Copyright © 2008 by Jim Benton. Excerpted by permission. • fans, meet Franny!
  • Franny K. Stein, Mad Scientist, has always had her eye on world domination, and she has to start somewhere...like her class elections! If people vote for her, they’ll be giving her all the control she wants. But Franny’s platform doesn’t have the same appeal as her competitors who are offering new playground equipment, so she creates The Frandidate. Made of DNA samples from a dog, a chameleon and a parrot, along with a scrap of carpet (so she’ll know where people stand), Franny’s special suit helps her say and do exactly what people want! But when The Frandidate starts making promises she knows she can’t keep, Franny realizes she might have gone too far…

Fantastic fun

Like the other six books in the Franny K. Stein library, The Frandidate is another marvelous invention born from the mind of Jim Benton. We never grow tired of Franny's crazy antics and creations in my household, which is especially impressive when you consider that I have two sons, and well, Franny is a girl. I guess mad science is truly a topic enthralling to both genders. In this seventh book, Franny decides to run for class president. Typical for a mad scientist, Franny's thoughts on how to improve the classroom are slightly extreme. Franny's ideas for exploding chalk for a wrong answer written on the chalkboard or robots who force you to eat a healthy lunch don't go over well with her classmates. The other candidates' speeches about new playground equipment or less homework win greater support with the students. Franny realizes that she is going to have to please all of the students in her class and sets out to invent a suit that will allow her to become whatever another person wants her to be. If a classmate loves bunnies, wearing the suit, Franny becomes a bunny. If a student loves basketball, then Franny can become their favorite basketball player. It's all very simple for a mad scientist, and Franny wins the class election by a landslide. Soon the power has gone to her head, though, and Franny decides that she can just as easily become the President of the United States. It takes a quick thinking lab assistant and a truth seeking mom, to save Franny and the rest of the world from a little mad science gone wrong. Lucky for Franny that the members of her cabinet are so well chosen.

Worth every penny

I normally dont buy hardcover books (more expensive) but my son is reading (again) his Franny books and wanted to read the latest book too..
The HUGE smile on his face when he saw the book this afternoon is worth every penny I paid for it. He read it in 30 minutes and then read it again. Thanks Jim Benton :-)

Absolutely Love Franny K Stein

My husband and I originally purchased book 1 of the Franny K Stein series in hopes of striking an interest in reading with our six year old daughter; it worked. All three of us fell in love with this quirky character! Since our first purchase, two years ago, we have all taken turns reading aloud chapters from each of the books. Our daughter had been waiting impatiently for Franny's newest book so as soon as it was released we bought Frandidate as a surprise. She was so thrilled that she read it in one day! I recommend this book for any kids who have a great imagination and a love of quirky humor, with bits of science fiction thrown in.
