This thriller never disappoints.”—James Patterson, #1 New York Times bestselling authorxa0 xa0xa0 “A first-rate, devilish thriller.”—Eric Rickstad, New York Times bestselling author of The Names of Dead Girls and The Silent Girls "This book lives up to the hype....fast paced, complex and filled with twists and turns, once I picked up this novel, it was incredibly hard to put down....At this point, this novel has me feeling a serious “book hangover”. And, with that ending, I am really hoping this will not be the last that I will read about these characters. 5/5 stars. A must read." — Clues and Reviewsxa0 xa0 "Bram Stoker Award finalist Barker ingeniously blends horrific images into a bizarre plotline to create this devilishly dark thriller."— Library Journal “…Nice twists on classic thriller tropes.” — Publisher’s Weekly “Superbly constructed and immaculately paced, this is one of the few serial killer thrillers that bears comparison with Thomas Harris’s 1981 masterpiece Red Dragon.”— Daily Mail “J.D. 400 pages of time wasted.....

It took me forever to get through this thing. Short chapters were my favorite part. Kept it on my night stand to help lull me to sleep....it did the trick. After the first 100 pages I found myself groaning each time I picked it up, hoping for any little interesting crumb to lure me in. Nope. But I'm no quitter. It kinda reminds me of flipping between channels when I'm trying to find something scary to watch after dark....and all I can find are old Westerns, some Dragnet, with a few little vintage B & W who done-its. And late night adds. So glad that 4th monkey is off my back now and I can search for a decent piece of entertainment. Phew! Good luck!

Decent Gory Over-The-Top Serial Killer Story

For those that haven't read this book, half of the chapters are told via a diary written by the serial killer depicting a very brief time in his childhood. The other chapters involve detectives trying to catch the adult version of said serial killer.

Ok, now that we're all caught up....

....here's how this book SHOULD have been written:

The entire first book in this series should have been about the childhood of the killer leading up to his current murder spree.

The backstory of this dude is far more interesting than the search for him by a trio of cliché detectives.

I want his entire childhood, I want to know what led up to the events he describes in his diary.

I need to know wtf is wrong with his parents? What led them to do what they did? What else had they done previously?

I want to hear about the entire grooming process that this child has clearly endured over the years.

Basically, this series should have started from the very beginning, not from the end.

Yo, JD Barker, can we get a comprehensive prequel?

3.5 Stars ⭐ rounded down because the Amazon's rating structure sucks sweaty hairy veiny testicles.

I mean, Wow! Best book I've read in years. A page turner, the diary part was by far the best part of this book. I have ordered the other two in the series and just hope I am not disappointed. This one will be hard to top. READ THIS BOOK!!!

Fast read but needs work

I've had this book for quite a while, a few years. I just never got around to reading it. I've got mixed feelings.
First, the good: this was a quick read, very engaging and kept me wanting to turn the pages to see if what I thought was going to happen was what was going to happen. Sometimes it was and sometimes it wasn't. The change of perspective in each chapter was interesting and kept the story fresh.

And now, the bad: the writing was not so good. There were grammatical errors, caps where things should not be caps. The dialogue was very stiff and unrealistic. Honestly, this read like a debut novel that had never seen (or hadn't seen enough) editing. I expect more from a trad published book. The saving grace of this book is the storyline. It could have been great, could have been so much better if the prose was a little tighter.

Is The Fourth Monkey a debut? No idea and I don't really care enough to look into it. I'm currently reading the second book, and thus far the writing has not improved.

If you're going to read this book, do so for entertainment purposes only and don't pay too much attention to the technical aspect of the writing.

Not a bad book, but it could have been so much better.

Wanted to like this more but

This started out really good. Then it focused on the little boy as he grew up, first talking about his happy outings with his parents and bit by bit we go back to this saga and watch him grow into a monster. The reason is his parents turn out to be monsters. It was a bit extreme for me and I don't plan to go on. This one has too much pain in it - the pain of the victims, the pain of the budding monster as he grows and the pain of the loved ones of the victims and the pain of the police trying to find him. And, in the end, it doesn't end well. This one is for someone tougher than me.

You gotta love psychos!

You may as well buy all three books in this series. It is that good... if you like psychopaths. The author is a really good writer. He gives clues to draw you in and then a curve to make you wonder what comes next. One of the few book(s) that I can really recommend.
