Features & Highlights

  • THE FIRE PIT IS THE THIRD BOOK IN THE FAROES NOVEL SERIES, FOLLOWING ON FROM THE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED THE KILLING BAY
  • In the wake of a dying man's apparent suicide, the skeleton of a young woman is discovered on a windswept hillside. Detective Hjalti Hentze suspects that it is the body of a Norwegian woman reported missing forty years earlier, while a commune occupied the land, and whose death may be linked to the abduction and rape of a local Faroese girl. Meanwhile British DI Jan Reyna is pursing his investigation into his mother's suicide. But as he learns more about her final days, links between the two cases start to appear: a conspiracy of murder and abuse spanning four decades. And as Hentze puts the same pieces together, he realizes that Reyna is willing to go further than ever before to learn the truth...

I admit that the only reason I have read this trilogy is to see how Ould addressed the Faroese Grind - the drive hunt where hundreds of pilot whales are brutally slaughtered annually by men, women, and even children. I was sorely disappointed - not a negative thought by any character about the Grind. And then, environmentalists are the villains in the second book - you know, that old, tired and tried plot line. Very disappointing that someone can write about the Faroes but still support a ritual dating from medieval times. And for those who would argue that they eat the meat - well, even the Faroese health authorities have advised consumption of pilot whale meat because of the toxins. And for other apologists who just argue that it's part of culture, I would point out that many disgusting "cultural" practices have been discontinued by modern societies.
And then in this latest offering, there are some issues that should have been addressed in the editing process. The presence of the Leica is never explained - just mentioned in an improbable sentence near the end of the book (maybe that was the edit). And one would think that an effort would have been made to re-cover the first skeleton found in the Faroes. And finally, wouldn't a potential witness, even a child, have been eliminated by a madman?

This is the third (of three) installments of the Faroes mysteries. To understand fully the thread of this novel one should read the first two, as well. The setting and some plot details are continuous and interconnected through the three books, with a (relatively) free-standing mystery within each one. The books are well-written, with a heavy emphasis on mood and atmosphere in these isolated but intriguing islands
