Description

"Fast, smart and authentic. Riley Fisher is a bold new character on the crime scene, grounding this eerie and engaging thriller. The Fields is one of the best procedurals I've read in a good long while." --Ace Atkins, New York Times bestselling author of The Heathens The Fields is my favorite sort of novel: the sharp prose and explosive plot immediately drew me in, but the richly textured exploration of life in rural America stayed with me long after I finished. I hope to see more of Sergeant Riley Fisher, the novel's dynamic female protagonist. This is a classic crime series in the making. -- Cristina Alger, New York Times bestselling author of Girls Like Us "This is superb. Dark, immersive and seriously gripping. Hints of True Detective & The Silence of the Lambs ." --Will Dean, author of The Last Thing to Burn "Young delivers a disturbing, twist-riddled thriller stocked with well-drawn characters." --Publishers Weekly "What could be more all-American than a small town amid rolling fields of corn? But when a woman's body is found in those same fields, the dark truth beneath that wholesome image begins to emerge.... From potential serial-killer investigation to high stakes political intrigue... The Fields is an impressive debut." --Mystery & Suspense --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. An Amazon Best Book of February 2022: A bloodied young woman named Chloe is running through an Iowa cornfield before she collapses and dies from her injuries. Days later, after the owner of Zephyr Farms sends up a drone to check for crop damage, Chloe’s brutalized body is discovered. When Sergeant Riley Fisher examines what remains of Chloe, she is horrified to recognize her old friend. Soon Riley is working with the BAU, hunting for a serial killer, as secrets from Chloe’s past threaten to interfere with the present. Young takes what could be a prosaic plot and breathes complexity, agonizing suspense, and a claustrophobic terror into it. Her canvas manages to capture both the big and the mundane details—of detective work, Big Agriculture, small town living, and office politicking—and weaves it all into a plot worthy of Tana French or Jane Harper in this riveting debut. —Vannessa Cronin, Amazon Editor --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. The Fields is Erin Young 's debut crime thriller, featuring Sergeant Riley Fisher of Black Hawk County, in the first of a planned series. Young lives and writes in Brighton, England. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. Read more

Graphiculture

Quick checklist to determine if Erin Young’s debut crime thriller, The Fields, is the right book for you:

- Do you live in Iowa?

- Can you stomach extremely graphic depictions of postmortem bodies, like those found in Karin Slaughter novels… but taken up a notch?

- Are you interested in the political debate about Big Agriculture and GMOs?

If you answered yes to all three of these questions, then oh boy this is your holy grail piece of fiction right here! Bodies are turning up in cornfields and barns and such, decomposing and full of maggots, and the motivation behind the killer might just be related to agricultural espionage.

Now listen, I’m from Iowa. Author Erin Young is not. She sure took notes while visiting the state though and packed her novel with alllll the Iowa things: State Fair butter cow, Maid Rite, Hawkeye sweatshirts, and lest we forget… FARMS! Yes, we do in fact grow stuff here. And yes, there are little farms and big farms, and GMO companies have a very big presence. As referenced in the book, other countries like China have indeed been caught trying to steal seeds from our soil and replicate them. Gotta feed the world, amiright!

If that last paragraph bored you, The Fields is probably too immersed in the world of agricultural politics to hold your interest. But if you’re like, heck yes, I want to dig into that and see characters take it to such extremes that people are being mutilated as a result, get yourself to a bookstore and buy it! Then preorder the follow up, since this is part one of a series featuring Sergeant Riley Fisher.

Marijuana "addict" brother in 2022?

I'm about halfway through this ok book but I'm having trouble with her views about drugs and "addiction". Many of the people in this book drink to excess but the featured "drug addict" is the lead character's brother who smokes...gasp....pot! He's also referred to as a "junkie". I know it's set in IOWA but when there are a bunch of drunks in the story talking about the pot addict it seems weak.
I'll finish the book but since the characters aren't very unique or interesting, I'm not expecting an explosive ending.
Well, I finished. Turns a little into medical science fiction in the big reveal. Deaths pile up and most of the "good guys" win. I won't be reading the sequel.
Don't expect it to all make sense. It doesn't. btw, I like sci-fi and have no problem with gross stuff or violence but the writing is the disappoint here. I'd give it 2 stars but people don't read 2 star reviews.

Needs a better ag advisor

I could not stand to read this under-informed polemic about agriculture. Ms Young's knowledge of ag is minimal (even her vocabulary is wrong) and of ag politics beyond "big is bad" even less. Strip the text of this nonsense and you perhaps might have something interesting.

I received a digital review copy of "The Fields" by Erin Young from Flatiron Books through NetGalley.com.

Riley Fisher's first major case

Riley Fisher is a fledgling police Sargant on her first major case. A local woman was found
murdered in a cornfield. Then another body shows up. Is there a murderer among them in
the small town? Then her job is in jeopardy as the investigation becomes political. Can her
team solve the case?

A great debut for the Riley Fisher series and Erin Young's first mystery. The pacing is good,
although there is too much exposition near the end of the book to explain everything. All in
all a great read. I can't wait for Riley's next case!!

Ok

The parts of the book that were good were really good. I just wasn't impressed. Too many stories in one? At first I thought it was heading towards being a horror story, then I caught on to some kind of government cover-up. What I did like was the questions it raised on climate change and how farming will have to change to accommodate it. So maybe 3 1/2 stars. I liked the way it ended with the hint of more. I will probably read another book by the author.

Not great

Tons of books like this out there ... and none of them at this price. There are multiple characters with multiple plot lines. The main character (Riley) spends way too much time reliving a past personal incident. The main plot is just not credible for a samll town in Iowa. Similar to the Reacher series.

A great read.

The Fields by newcomer Erin Young is outstanding from the first page until last. The action is detailed and sometimes graphic, encouraging readers to remember Thomas Harris and The Silence Of The Lambs.
The Fields takes place in the American Midwest, evoking images of millions of acres of farmland populated by never-ending corn stalks. It is here where newly promoted investigator Sgt. Riley Fisher of the Black Hawk County Sheriff's office starts her day. Farmers discover a body while using a drown. When Sgt. Fisher inspects the scene she finds that the victim was a friend many years ago. Bodies pile up as quickly as clues as Fisher attempts to untangle a frightening and logic-defying series of homicides.
The author plans on a series with Sgt. Fisher as the star attraction. Readers will hope that the author can write as quickly as they can read.

Great thriller

It's tough to think of this novel as a debut. It's so masterfully done. Great descriptive writing and a plot with lots of surprises. Good characters and a wonderful Midwestern setting. I'll be watching for Erin Young's next novel.

A Field of (bad) Dreams

A good murder in a small town mystery that morphs into something more bazaar. While the end is rather extreme, it has interesting science facts to make it more believable. The characterization on the protagonist and the supporting cast were detailed and inventive.

Agriculture and murder.

3.5 stars (rounding down)
This dark crime debut is the beginning of a series. The author is an entertaining writer and appears knowledgeable about the topics. I’ll be watching for Book 2. Beware…the murder scenes are quite graphic.

This is Riley’s first crime scene and she’s unsettled to find that the victim is a childhood friend she hasn’t been in touch with for years. Especially since the murder is quite grisly. But doesn’t feel the relationship will conflict with the investigation. However, as time goes by, memories she doesn’t want to awaken start to rise to the surface.

The murders and the story behind them were fascinating. Despite that, the book contains a lot about agriculture and corn. How family farms are being taken over by large agriculture. The political side was interesting but a little much. It outplayed the murders.

Thank you to the author and publisher for providing the gifted ARC through Edelweiss. All opinions are my own.
