The basics, but sometimes that's where you start

This book reminds me a little of the Dale Carnagie method of how to win friends and influence people. They are basic concepts, which is sometimes exactly what people need, however I wish the book was a little more robust in how to implement those concepts. It borders on being to simplistic. The stories are great though, and any sports fan will be quickly hooked. If you haven't gone through any formal leadership training, this is a great starting point.

Essential Wooden for personal life or business

Any follower of John Wooden will appreciate this book. I admire John Wooden's message and management style. I have read several of his books or books about him so this one fits in with some of the best. My actual favorite was his biography which gives a little more background in how he became the person he did. (My Personal Best, also with Steve Jamison.)

However, any leader of any organization, not just sports, can find something of value in this book. It is a summary of some of his main rules for living. You can pick it up and probably pick up something useful and inspiring anywhere in the book.

The Essential Wooden offers readers highlights from John Wooden's treasure trove of lessons learned over a lifetime of leading and coaching. These seem to be a collection of lessons that he wanted to share as he was 95 years old and approached the last season of his life. Co-author Steve Jamison calls this book a "deep dig by the legendary coach into how he did it and what lessons you can draw for yourself." This book is especially helpful for coaches, and will also help any athlete or team leader. There are lessons here that translate well into any area of life. This book is definitely not "more of the same" in terms of leadership. I've read many books on leadership, and this book resonated and enlightened me. Wooden's writing also confronted me and challenged me into some self-examination and transformative thinking. I'm glad I read this book. I wish I had a coach or mentor like Wooden much earlier in my life. He is truly an impactful man and even this little book of his wisdom can be life-changing.

I would have greatly benefited from a Coach Wooden

Growing up, I was never involved with team sports. In my adult life, I have never been more than a fleeting part of a large organization.

Thus, I have never had the benefit of a team for support or a coach for guidance.

After reading what amounts to the compiled wisdom of John Wooden, I regret that.

This man was a leader. He had a firm set of principles, his famous “Pyramid Of Success”, solid core values and a deep respect for the qualities of an individual.

He was able to pull together groups of players and weld them into a team, united by core principles and, on the playing field, uniting them into one.

Here, in plain language, are his beliefs and his strategies for instilling his players with them.

None of his principles are unique. All focus on the individual and encouraging a person to do their best at all times. He doesn’t call for super-human efforts, but rather all of what a person can deliver.

There’s no raucous “rah-rah” here. Just the measured words of a man who understood himself and his players.

It’s great reading – and I really wish I had had a Coach Wooden in my life.
