Powerful book

This book addresses a common family dynamic that happens when parents try to rely on their children for emotional support. Gives a good description of the problem along with strategies to work past it.

Invaluable

Everyone should read this book. There is so much information in it about how healthy families behave that it would be useful even for those who have not been subject to an extremely close relationship with a parent.

Don't be put off by the title. "Emotional Incest" sounds strong and you might be tempted to believe that it doesn't apply to you. Read the back cover and decide for yourself.

This book will actually help you.

This book is well researched, cites its sources, and provides excellent therapeutic exercises. Despite the sort of "shock value" cover/title, this is really a solid self-help book and I highly recommend it. Good balance of anecdote and fact, well paced, not repetitive, doesn't talk down to you -- I couldn't put it down.

A Must-Read for those with parents that play a too huge role in their lives

This book hts the mark. I had heard of the term before, but never did it really flesh itself out as well as it did as when I read this book. Dr. Love knows what she's talking about....and now I don't feel like I'm crazy.

All You Need Is Love, Pat Love

This book sat in my bedside bookshelf for about a month because I assumed it would be a boring, pedantic read. My mistake. Pat Love is engaging, informative and reasonable - if that even makes sense. She isn't out to blame our parents, but rather believes that often they "did the best they could with what they had". That being said, it is up to us to learn, grow and change if we want to break the cycle.

If you believe you might benefit from this book, I'd say to pick up a copy today. At the very least, it's a fascinating (and relatively quick) read. At best, it might just change your life – and your child's.

Always the child.

Good book with great insights. How a parent's love can hinder you as a child and latter in life. How a dependence on a parent can be crippling. How it can make the transition from child to adult extremely difficult to almost impossible.

Book I use in my therapy practice

One of the few good books out there on parental enmeshment. A book I recommend to some of my psychotherapy clients.
