Description

" The Dying of the Light: End was page after page of excitement, action, and intrigue. The story had a great balance between character development and plot and the writing was nearly flawless. This book did a great job of making the most plausible case for zombieism that I've ever seen. I even sacrificed sleep on quite a few nights to read just one more chapter." - 5 stars, Sift Book Reviews "The level of detail and resultant military feeling is incredible. The fantastically descriptive fight sequences are just incredible and make you think you are in the middle of a Navy SEAL unit or Rainbow 6 squad. Top this all off with seriously talented prose that feels almost movie-like in places (would make one hell of a George A. Romeo inspired film), and an absolutely corker of a storyline then you have the makings of one seriously good novel, it's one of the best Zombie novels I have ever read." - 5 stars, SF Book Reviews "This was a great book and a thrilling read that dealt with the whole zombie outbreak idea through a series of totally different and original perspectives. It offers a more upbeat and fresh approach, almost as though mankind actually has a chance of getting past this. The momentum of this novel is constant and relentless and barely gives you time to breathe before it throws the next hurdle at you! I love Kristopher's matter-of-fact style of writing... this, my friends, is how zombie fiction deserves to be written!" - 5 stars, The TBR Pile "Kristopher's invigorating prose and storytelling abilities blew me away as I read. He's created an extremely scary novel intertwining real world current events with the zombie apocalypse. As scary as it might be, his explanations actually make a lot of sense, especially in light of the many political cover-ups and the like that take place all over the world. I was fascinated as I read, the wheels of my mind and imagination working constantly to process the wonderful images, explanations, and concepts presented throughout this fictional piece." - 4 stars, A Book Vacation

this is incredibly good. Jason takes a few chapters to warm up

Oh brother. For the guy's first book, this is incredibly good. Jason takes a few chapters to warm up, with the first three chapters being exactly what you'd expect from someone's first book, but hang on for a little while, he grows out of it fast. After that point, you have interesting, believable characters and a fair share of action, intrigue, and romance. Jason's style is clear and fast paced, and a reader won't have any trouble following the story. The only problem is putting the book down!

Fun End of the World Book Candy

I don’t generally read or watch a lot of zombie material. When everyone was on that craze, I was not. But I do love a good zombie story. Usually when in the mood I go on a Resident Evil binge. One of my all time favorite movies (top twenty anyway) is 28 Days Later, the first time I saw it I was impressed by the cinematography and the choice in music made me cry it was so lovely.

I chuckled and snickered all the way through reading Pride & Prejudice & Zombies and just recently I was introduced to the movie Warm Bodies and absolutely loved it.

So even though the zombie craze isn’t entirely my thing – I’m not ignorant of the genre and I do enjoy it. I existed in the house when my husband was watching The Walking Dead, he watched too many episodes without me to follow the whole show, but now reading The Dying of the Light I feel like I got the better end of the stick.

Kristopher’s work is both an easy breezy read as well as an involved and intricate apocalypse novel. Current events are tied into the possibilities – which is always the best way to build a dystopian or apocalyptic world, in my opinion. The characters are real, the main one appropriately both strong and sappy. (Without a little bit of nostalgia and romance, what in God’s name would anyone want to save?)

Of course, that’s always the best part of an end of the world story – it’s why millions have fallen in love with Doctor Who. Any fight to the death for a whole world must involve a story of humanity and what it means to be human. Jason Kristopher pulls this off well, without overwhelming the casual reader with too much intensity.

After reading several books lately that involve a lot of plodding and lengthy prologues (from biographies to novels), Jason Kristopher’s opening sentence “I didn’t see Rebecca die the second time” was just the clincher I needed to jump into a refreshingly fast paced story.

I’m looking forward to Interval, the next book in the series.

Different take on your standard zombie novel...

First off, I have to compliment Mr. Kristopher for a job well done on his first published novel! It was a fun read overall. Some slow moments, some rushed moments, but I enjoyed it. Definitely looking forward to reading the sequel when it arrives.

If you're looking for blood and gore in your zombie novel, this might not suit your tastes. This is a bit more "behind the scenes" of a zombie apocalypse, on the front lines of those sworn to protect their country (the Army in this case). It's mostly told from the viewpoint of a survivor after a devastating attack on his hometown, when he joins a super-secret military organization that was formed to battle zombie outbreaks and keep their existence hidden from the general populace. Occasionally, the viewpoint jumps to third-person, or even first-person of a different character...this took a little getting used to, I haven't read a novel previously that jumped around like that. Not a bad thing, just not your norm.

While I did enjoy the unfolding of the plot, I found a lot of the characters needing a little more depth. They are more archetypes than people, but I do grant that this is the author's first novel, and I'm hoping for more fleshing out (pun slightly intended) of characters in the sequel novel.

Overall, I'd recommend this novel to zombie fans who are looking for something a bit out of the norm, or to people who aren't avid zombie readers, but want to ease their way into the genre.

Great job, Mr. Kristopher, good luck on the rest of the trilogy!
